He will also discuss how current medical diagnostic coding often underdiagnoses patients with heat-related illnesses and how emerging electronic health record features may improve our ability to measure the health impacts of extreme heat. DESCRIPTION:In worship\, we read the Bible\, learn\, pray and praise.  Now\, experience those activities anew in nature. Join a small group guided outing in Hermann Park to engage with the natural world on a deeper level – to learn what it can teach us about the Creator\, join it’s song of praise\, and to pray in relationship with the world around you.  \n\n\n\nEach participant will engage with elements of the natural world that draw them\, read accompanying Bible verses\, and ponder meditation questions – all while using all their senses as they pray. SUMMARY:The Path of Hope: A Study on Climate Action for Faith Communities
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join an online discussion series built around 15-minute videos featuring interviews with US faith leaders\, representatives of climate-impacted communities from the global South\, and presentations by UN officials and other experts. The videos walk viewers through four key climate policy issues that intersect with universal faith concerns for vulnerable and marginalized people. The series focuses on how climate change is impacting the core outreach programs of faith communities around the world\, how those impacts will increase in the future\, and why these impacts create an imperative for people of faith to advocate for strong US climate action.   \n\n\n\nA discussion guide is included that asks participants to think deeply about how their own local faith community’s direct service programs intersect with climate impacts\, and how knowledge and experiences gained through these programs might help to inform climate policy. DESCRIPTION:Join Restorative Houston for our Happy Hour Gala on Thursday\, November 19 during International Restorative Justice Week. Inspired by Dr. Arelia Johnson’s focus on joy as strategy\, the theme is “Joy and Justice.” \nWe’re bringing together donors\, practitioners\, apprentices and community partners to share light bites\, connect\, and celebrate the growing movement for community rooted justice in Houston. Dress code is JOYFUL and snazzy! \nWe will have featured auction items\, a pop up shop from Kendra Scott\, selfie photo booth\, and a DJ! \nWe are honored to feature nationally recognized restorative justice practitioner\, author\, and trainer Felix Rosado as our keynote speaker. Felix co‑founded Let’s Circle Up\, a restorative justice project created inside Graterford State Prison\, where he spent 27 years leading peace‑building and anti‑violence initiatives before receiving executive clemency in 2022. During his incarceration\, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Villanova University and helped build one of the country’s most innovative inside‑led restorative justice programs. \nNow living in Philadelphia\, Felix serves as Executive Director of Let’s Circle Up and teaches at Chestnut Hill College and the Community College of Philadelphia. He is the author of Justice from the Inside Up: A Restorative Justice Education Facilitator’s Manual\, a foundational text for practitioners across the country. \nAbout Restorative Houston: \nThrough our Peacemaker Apprenticeship\, we train youth and adults to facilitate restorative circles\, earn certification\, and join a citywide network of community based practitioners who help build community\, interrupt conflict\, and support healing after harm. \nOur work extends into schools\, neighborhoods\, and the criminal legal system\, where we build belonging\, strengthen emotional wellness\, and equip communities with the skills to connect\, address harm and navigate difficult conversations. \n

DESCRIPTION:HPJC is excited to announce the recipients of our 2026 Peacemaker Awards\, and we hope you will plan to attend the ceremony on Saturday afternoon\, Nov. 21 (note: date change – this was originally scheduled for Oct. 11). \n\n\n\nThe event is both a celebration of groups and individuals making our community better\, plus a time to socialize with other activists. And it’s also the main fund raiser for HPJC for the year. \n\n\n\nThis year’s honorees\, in alphabetical order\, are: \n\n\n\nCouncil on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR)\, Houston Chapter\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCAIR’s vision is to be a leading advocate for justice and mutual understanding. CAIR’s mission is to enhance understanding of Islam\, protect civil rights\, promote justice\, and empower American Muslims. \n\n\n\nCAIR works on Ensuring Justice and Equality — Safeguarding the rights and dignity of our community. Stand with us in ensuring justice and equality by reporting any civil rights violations or discrimination. \n\n\n\nCAIR-Houston\, along with HPJC and other civil rights organizations in our area\, was a co-sponsor of a civil rights conference here in 2014. HPJC was glad to work with CAIR then and we developed a very good working relationship. \n\n\n\nThe Houston Chapter of CAIR-Texas is a nonprofit civil rights and advocacy organization dedicated to promoting justice and mutual understanding. As part of the nation’s largest Muslim civil liberties organization\, the Houston Chapter operates alongside other Texas affiliates in Austin\, Dallas\, and San Antonio. Through its grassroots efforts\, the chapter works to protect civil rights\, address discrimination\, and empower American Muslims to actively participate in political and social activism. \n\n\n\nThe Houston Chapter of CAIR-Texas promotes a positive image of Islam and Muslims through media relations\, government affairs\, education\, and advocacy. Its work includes challenging negative portrayals of Islam\, advocating for Muslim concerns in legislative spaces\, and addressing Islamophobia. The chapter’s civil rights department provides legal assistance to individuals facing discrimination or hate crimes. At the same time\, its media and government affairs teams engage with journalists and policymakers to ensure balanced representation and community participation. \n\n\n\nThe Houston Chapter of CAIR-Texas also focuses on community empowerment and youth development. It organizes voter registration drives\, fosters interfaith dialogue\, and supports leadership programs to equip American Muslim youth with the tools to engage in civic and political life. Forming a task force\, they created a 501(c)(3) corporation\, found a strip center location\, and began a homeless ministry. 1960 Hope Center opened its doors on August 29\, 2016. \n\n\n\nThe ministry quickly grew with support from more than 20 churches. Initially\, hospitality was our focus\, providing “Dignity Through Hospitality.” As the ministry matured\, we increased our services\, focusing on life development support\, including life-skills classes\, support groups\, one-on-one mentoring\, and spiritual support. “Compassion\, Commitment\, and Change” is our focus. \n\n\n\nMore than 3\,000 unique homeless individuals were served in the first three years of the Center. Several hundred made significant strides in overcoming addictions\, acquiring jobs\, and finding affordable housing. In August 2019\, we became Hope Center Houston and acquired a new facility\, allowing us to provide additional services and opportunities for supporting agencies to come alongside our mission. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGrassroots Leadership\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Grassroots Leadership is a Houston and Austin Texas-based national social justice organization working to end the government’s use of for-profit prisons and reliance on mass incarceration\, detention\, and deportation policies. \n\n\n\nWe make up a beautifully diverse group of lived experiences reimagining a community without policing. Building spaces within our organization to learn from one another and remember that we are all learning to heal and develop abolition forward thinking. \n\n\n\nOur programs are fueled by our memberships\, which consist of lived experiences and allyship\, who work together to organize strategic campaigns throughout Texas. \n\n\n\nMore about Grassroots Leadership and its programs can be found  at www.grassrootsleadership.org  \n\n\n\nTwo of its major programs are Texas Advocates for Justice\, and Participatory Defense. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTexas Advocates for Justice unites formerly incarcerated individuals\, their  families\, people of all faiths\, and allies to build safe and resilient communities through organizing\, leadership training and connections to community resources. \n\n\n\nFor more information about their activities\, see the Texas Advocates for Justice web page \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParticipatory Defense is a community organizing model for people facing charges\, their families and communities to impact the outcome of cases and transform the court system’s power landscape.
