SUMMARY:Earth Day Barter Fair
DESCRIPTION:A Barter Fair provides an opportunity to trade objects and services without using common currency.  The Quaker testimonies of Simplicity\, Community and Stewardship encourage Friends to find creative ways to care for the earth and each other\, and we want to extend this opportunity to others in the community.  Creating a space to practice thinking together in a new way about how we place value on objects and services within our community seems like a worthwhile way to observe the 49th  anniversary of Earth Day. \nTo get involved\, just come!   Bring a table\, shelf\, rug or blanket to display your goods or a sign that describes your service(s).   CHILDREN ARE WELCOME!  Children are often the best models of how this can work.  They have the ability to add value to an item by describing potential uses\, and the creativity to negotiate three-way trades. \nThere will be a designated area for “free” items that you are willing to give to whomever wants them.  Visitors may then use such items to barter and trade with if they wish.   At the end of the day all items remaining at the “Free Table” will be donated to the Women’s Center. \n

You’re invited you to come listen to our great guest speakers\, learn more about the national campaign\, and find out how you can get involved to fight for health justice here in Texas! \nThe event is free and open to all who may be interested in learning more or figuring how they can participate. \nWhat do we mean by Medicare for All?  Our national strategy advocates for the following principles:  \nA Single Health Program: Everyone will be covered by one health insurance program\, administered by the federal government\, and have equal access to all medical services and treatments. \nComprehensive Coverage: All services requiring a medical professional will be fully covered. You go to the doctor of your choice. Dental\, vision\, mental health\, and pharmaceuticals are all included.\nFree at the point of service: All healthcare costs will be financed through tax contributions based on ability to pay: no copays\, no fees\, no deductibles and no premiums. Ever.\nUniversal Coverage: Coverage for all United States residents –– non-citizens included.\nJobs: A jobs initiative and severance for those affected by the transition to government-run healthcare. \nKey to our local strategy is fighting winnable battles to bring more health justice to those in need. In particular\, we are demanding that Houston must provide Paid Sick Leave benefits to all of its workers\, not just a privileged few. It happened in Austin just recently –– the first city in the South to extend such benefits to all of its residents ––  so why can’t it happen here too? \nCome to the Town Hall to learn more about how Austin accomplished this fantastic achievement. We will hear from Ana Gonzalez from Workers Defense Project and members from Austin DSA –– two organizations that were instrumental in the battle.  \nWe look forward to seeing you on April 21! SUMMARY:Post-Harvey Resilience: Top Climate Scientist Katharine Hayoe 4-19
DESCRIPTION:As one of the world’s top climate scientists\, Katharine Hayhoe has been named among Time‘s 100 most influential people\, Foreign Policy‘s 100 leading global thinkers\, and Fortune‘s 50 world’s greatest leaders. The New York Times called her “…one of the nation’s most effective communicators on the threat of climate change and the need for action.” Her presentation will go beyond global climate issues\, as she addresses local measures to make Houston a more resilient community post-Harvey. She is a professor at Texas Tech University and director of the Climate Science Center at Texas Tech. Her work has resulted in over 125 peer-reviewed publications. She is a lead author of the nation’s Fourth National Climate Assessment special report soon to be submitted to Congress and the President. She has conducted local climate impact assessments for a broad cross-section of organizations and cities\, from Boston Logan Airport to the state of California to Austin Water. As a self-professed Evangelical Christian\, she is well known for bridging the gap between scientists and faith-based communities.

Currently\, she is a motivational speaker\, and an educational consultant. Rep. Allen holds a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Education degree from Texas Southern University and a Doctorate of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Houston\, as well as a certificate in administration and supervision from the University of Houston. Rep. Allen has received many awards and honors\, including Principal of the year\, District 5\, and Outstanding Alumnus of the University of Houston. Rep. Allen also received the Texas Freedom Network “Walking the Walk Award”\, from Governor Ann Richards\, the Living Legend Award\, presented by the Texas Alliance Of Black School Educators\, and was recently honored in her hometown of Livingston\, Texas\, with Alma Allen Day. Rep. Allen is an ex-officio board member of the Houston Red Cross\, and Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees for the Art Institute of Illinois. Additionally\, Rep. Allen is a member of the Houston Association of Professional Administrators\, American Association of Supervision and Curriculum\, Texas Association of School Administrators\, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People\, Texans Concerned for Superior Schools\, the Women’s Chamber of Commerce\, the National Association of Democratic Women\, The American Association of Curriculum and Development\, and the Council of Negro Women. Rep. Allen was elected to the Texas House of Representatives on November 2\, 2004. Rep. Allen and Lawrence A. Allen\, Sr.(Deceased)\, are the proud parents of two children and the grandparents of five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

DESCRIPTION:Zikaron BaSalon is an annual event\, which takes place on Israeli Holocaust Memorial Day. Zikaron BaSalon started in Israel\, in a living room where a few friends gathered in 2010 and experienced an extraordinary and meaningful event. The idea was born from the understanding that the connection between us and the memories of the Holocaust\, has significantly deteriorated. Today\, the program operates in more than 50 countries around the world. \n  \nAlongside formal events\, Zikaron BaSalon offers a new\, meaningful and intimate way to commemorate this day and address its implications through discussions at home among family\, friends and guests. It is a unique and authentic tradition of people gathering together to open their hearts to the stories of the survivors\, sing\, think\, read\, talk and most importantly- listen. \n  \nZikaron BaSalon happens in the living room space of a home with 15-40 people. DESCRIPTION:Two Quakers have recently returned from an interfaith delegation to Palestine and Israel. They will share photos and stories from their experiences after staying with families\, meeting with Israeli and Palestinian peace activists and non-governmental organizations and experiencing life on both sides of the separation barrier. \nCome and join us\, experience life today in the area and learn about the struggles and hopes for the region. \nTwo Quakers from Live Oak Friends Meeting in Houston went with an interfaith delegation to Palestine and Israel. They and twenty-eight other participants from the United States\, Canada and the UK had the unique opportunity to hear directly from Palestinians and Israelis regarding the role of the United States in the pursuit of a just peace. The US government is the most dominant international player in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. \nBridget Lois Jensen is a second-generation Houstonian with a family history of service to the people of the city. Believing that Houston’s diversity is an asset only if the various communities develop relationships with one another\, she became involved in interfaith and cross-cultural activities with such organizations as Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston and the Center for the Healing of Racism. About her trip\, Ms. Jensen says\, “Though peace through political means has been elusive\, I witnessed a visceral hope in the people we met who are living in the midst of the conflict. I saw how their resiliency\, courage\, and commitment to preserving human dignity feed this hope and inspire individuals from various countries who accompany them. I too have been inspired and I want to share their stories and my experience so others will want to join this community of hope.” \nAlex McDonald is an entrepreneur and a Quaker committed to the American values of freedom and equality. Having been a student of the Israeli / Palestinian conflict for many years\, Mr. McDonald is grateful to have had the opportunity to see first-hand the implications of U.S. policies and to be able to separate fact from fiction in what we hear in the news.
