DESCRIPTION:Toy and teddy bear distribution to children on Christmas Eve. \nHaving a parent behind bars is traumatic enough for children\, but to a young child at Christmas time it may be an emotional disaster.  When children go into a jail to see their mother or father during the holidays\, the very real potential for psychological scarring exists.  A group of men\, women and children since 2013 have taken these kids\, the most innocent victims of mass incarceration\, into their hearts and their arms at Christmas time at the jails in Houston.  They have donated time\, money and energy to ensure these little humans receive at least a little glimmer of happiness when they emerge from the repressive atmosphere of the Harris County Adult Detention Center.  Walking out of the doors there\, they see a crowd of smiling faces standing behind Santa Claus and a huge pile of presents.  To see the transformation on these small faces from sadness and confusion to wonder and pure joy changes the lives of all who experience it. \nYou are cordially invited to join us at the jail on Christmas Eve this year as we carry these children a message of hope and love. To Volunteer contact:  Rebecca Lavergne: cmason4103@yahoo.com \nIf you cannot make it but still want to help\, please go to www.hpjc.org and note that the donation is for the Christmas at the Jail event.  Snail mailers can send tax free donations to Houston Peace and Justice Center\, PO Box 66234\, Houston Texas 77266.   \nThere is much wrong in the world today\, this is an opportunity to be a part of something which is clearly good and positive.   \nMerry Christmas to you and your family!

DESCRIPTION:An opportunity to trade objects and services without using common currency and to support “Buy Nothing Day\,” a national effort to provide alternatives to the media driven consumerism of “Black Friday.”  This also offers the community an opportunity to share in the Quaker testimonies of simplicity\, stewardship\, and community by creating a space to practice thinking together in a new way about how we place value on objects and services within our community. \nWe will also share a meal of left-overs from Thanksgiving feasts\, so all attendees are invited to bring left overs to share. \nTo get involved\, just come.  Bring a table\, shelf\, rug or blanket to display your goods or a sign that describes your service(s).  Bring some food to share\, if you wish.  CHILDREN ARE WELCOME!  Children are often the best models of how this can work.  They have the ability to add value to an item by describing potential uses\, and the creativity to negotiate three-way trades. \nThere will be a designated area for “free” items that you are willing to give to whomever wants them.  Visitors may then use such items to barter and trade with if they wish. At the end of the day\, whatever is left on the free table will be donated to the women’s center. \nNo money will be exchanged for services or goods.  The purpose of this event is to challenge those who choose to participate to NOT SHOP or BUY anything on this day after Thanksgiving.

DESCRIPTION:The Center for the Healing of Racism will present a screening of the film “From Swastika to Jim Crow” on Thursday\, November 16 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm\, at 3412 Crawford St.\, Houston\, 77004.  The one-hour documentary tells the little known story of German Jewish professors who\, expelled from their homeland by the Nazis\, found new lives and careers at all-Black colleges and universities in the South.  The film uncovers a remarkable moment in U.S. history while offering a fresh perspective on the complex history of race relations in the United States.  The screening will be followed by a discussion.\n\nThe event is free and open to the public (first 45 to RSVP). The local awardee is Kathryn Griffin Griñán\, a Recovery Coach & Peer-To-Peer Counselor at Been There\, Done That in Houston\, Texas. The public award ceremony will take place on November 12\, 2017 at 3pm in the Rothko Chapel\, including a keynote speech by Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis\, with a reception to follow on the plaza. This ceremony will honor both recipients’ courage while recognizing the vital importance of their work. \nAbout the Awardees:\nPierre Claver Mbonimpa is the executive director of Association pour la Protection des Droits Humains et des Personnes Détenues (Association for the Protection of Prisoners and Human Rights – APRODH)\, an organization that documents and reports on human rights violations with an emphasis on those committed against incarcerated people in Burundi where its citizens face alarming insecurity and violence. He has been imprisoned and faced an assassination attempt after challenging the government’s many abuses\, including sexual violence\, torture\, and violations committed against incarcerated people. \nKathryn Griffin Griñán‘s road to recovery led her to the re-entry program in the Harris County Sheriff’s Office jail where she provides direct service and counseling to victims of sex trafficking\, while advocating for rehabilitation and community support versus incarceration. \nTo learn about other Rothko Chapel Óscar Romero Award related programs this season\, please click here.

DESCRIPTION:ORA Pre-Program: Silencing Opposition: Human Rights Violations in Burundi\nConversation with Former Ambassador Robert Krueger and Tony Tate\, The Fund for Global Human Rights \nAbout the presenters:\nRobert Krueger is a former US Representative and US Senator from Texas\, and served as US Ambassador on three occasions: to Mexico\, Burundi\, and Botswana; and additionally as US Special Representative to the Southern African Development Community. During his service in Burundi\, Krueger’s outspokenness on human rights issues provoked an ambush of his convoy in which two persons were killed and eight grievously wounded. Former President Bill Clinton\, addressing seven African presidents in Washington said\, “Our symbols need to be people like Ambassador Krueger\, who risked his life to keep people alive in Burundi.” Nobert Ndihokubwayo\, member of Burundi Parliament said\, “An ambassador out of the ordinary\, he went to the country side to see for himself the atrocities committed against a population afraid to speak out. He viewed massacre sites and visited the wounded at their hospital beds. This man of peace and exceptional courage contributed immensely to the defense of human rights for the population of Burundi; even today\, his name reminds people of the love and hope that he gave to the people of Burundi.” His book on living amid genocide in Burundi\, From Bloodshed to Hope in Burundi\, was published in 2007 by the University of Texas Press. Krueger holds a Ph.D. from Oxford University\, and served as a Professor of English and as Vice Provost and Dean of Arts and Sciences at Duke University. He currently lives with his family in New Braunfels\, Texas. \nTony Tate began working with the Fund for Global Human Rights as the program officer for Sub-Saharan Africa in October 2010. He oversees the Fund’s grant making programs in Burundi\, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. Before joining the Fund\, Tony was a program officer at Unbound Philanthropy\, responsible for the development of the organization’s international programs. Prior to his work at Unbound Philanthropy\, Tony worked for seven years as a researcher at Human Rights Watch\, first as their in-country researcher in Burundi\, later as the Africa researcher in the Children’s Rights Division. At Human Rights Watch\, he investigated and published reports on human rights violations in numerous countries in central\, eastern and southern Africa. In the 1990s\, Tony worked as a case manager at the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Comoros Islands. He has a J.D. from the City University of New York School of Law\, an M.A. in international affairs and African studies from Columbia University\, and a B.A. from the George Washington University. Tony is a member of the advisory committee of the Children’s Rights Division of Human Rights Watch and is fluent in French and conversant in Swahili.

A former State Department official\, Matt resigned in protest from his post in Afghanistan in 2009 over U.S. strategic policy and goals. Matthew served in Iraq in 2004-2005 in Salah ad Din Province and in 2006-2007 in Anbar Province as a Captain in the USMC. He has participated in VFP delegations to Standing Rock\, Okinawa\, and Palestine\, and is a member of the advisory boards of Expose Facts\, World Beyond War\, and Veterans For Peace. \nTARAK KAUFF served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper from 1959 to 1962. He has been a member of the Veterans For Peace Board of Directors for the past five years. Tarak has held a lead role in VFP’s Direct Action Team\, organizing and leading actions at the National Archives\, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial\, and multiple actions at the White House. He took part in the Gaza Freedom March in Cairo. Experiential exercises\, small groups\, and one-to-one interactions build community and trust around the themes of:\nAffirmation & Self Esteem\nCommunication & Cooperation\nCreative Conflict Resolution\nMission Statement: AVP is an all-volunteer organization offering experiential workshops that empower individuals to liberate themselves and others from the burden of violence. Our fundamental belief is that there is a “power for peace” in everyone\, and that this power works through individuals who are open to it to transform violence to nonviolence.
