DESCRIPTION:The Center for the Healing of Racism presents Dialogue: Racism\, a two-day intensive workshop that educates participants about racism and facilitates the process by which individuals can begin to counter the affects of racism on their lives and become empowered to interrupt the cycle of racist attitudes. The workshop provides a safe\, respectful\, and loving atmosphere for individuals to learn new information\, share experiences\, dispel fears and guilt\, and get to know each other.\n \nDialogue: Racism will be offered on two consecutive Saturdays\, October 7 and 14\, 9 am to 4:30 pm\, 3412 Crawford Street (at Holman)\, Houston\, TX 77004.  The event is free and open to the public (first 50 to RSVP). SUMMARY:The Journey of Hope...From Violence to Healing
DESCRIPTION:The Journey of Hope…From Violence to Healing puts human faces on the issue of the death penalty. Led by murder victim family members joined by death row families\, the exonerated and others impacted by the failed promises of a broken system. Our unique personal stories touch people’s hearts and change people’s minds on this vitally important issue. We advocate for alternatives to the death penalty\, we encourage forgiveness as a way of healing and endorse restorative justice as a way of life. \nJourney Storytellers come from all walks of life and represent the full spectrum and diversity of faith\, ethnicity and economic situation. We have experienced the insanity and horror of murder and its tragic aftermath. We reject the death penalty as a failed public policy and as a solution to ending our pain. Presentations can be adapted to the needs of the inviting venue but our preferred program opportunities feature the teaming of a murder victim family member with a death row family member\, an exoneree\, a death row survivor\, a family member of the executed\, or others impacted by the failed promises of a broken system. Many Venues such as high schools\, colleges and universities\, churches and religious settings\, community\, civic\, and professional organizations offer opportunities to open dialogue on how the death penalty prolongs suffering and prevents healing. Our speakers share their stories about the process of healing through forgiveness and reconciliation.They call for alternatives to the death penalty and an end to the cycle of violence that creates more murder victim family members.

DESCRIPTION:Working as a white ally against racism is hard but not impossible.  One thing that doesn’t help is saying “I don’t see color.”  The failure to see color only benefits white America.  A world without color is a world without racial debt.  \n \nHelp the Center for the Healing of Racism develop better allies by participating in a dialogue about the book Tears We Cannot Stop: A Sermon to White America by Michael Eric Dyson.  Dr. Dyson is a Professor of Sociology at Georgetown University\, an ordained minister\, author of 20 books\, a writer for The New York Times\, and an editor for both The New Republic and ESPN’s The Undefeated Ebony.\n \nPlease join us on Wednesday\, October 11\, 2017 from noon to 2:00 pm -or- Thursday\, October 12\, 2017 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.  The events will take place at 3412 Crawford Street (corner of Holman)\, Houston\, TX 77004.  The events are free and open to the public but registration is required. DESCRIPTION:2017 Rothko Chapel Óscar Romero Award Pre-Program\nDouble jeopardy: Women and the Criminal Justice System\nConversation and Book Signing with Julie Bindel \nWomen of sex trafficking face the dual realities of being victims while also being prosecuted as offenders. Join Julie Bindel in conversation with Houston activists and advocates as they explore this topic from both local and global perspectives. \nIn her most recent book “The Pimping of Prostitution\,” Bindel takes the debate on prostitution legislation head-on\, exposing the lived realities of women in contrast with the dominant discourse in current academic and liberal feminist debates. \nBased on more than 250 interviews with people involved in and affected by prostitution around the world\, Bindel exposes the harms of the global sex trade and documents the emergence of the exciting and vibrant survivor abolitionist movement – leading us to question when the policy makers\, politicians and international human rights organizations will start to reject the mythology around prostitution\, hold sex buyers accountable for the damage that they do\, and truly begin to fight for the human rights of women around the world. \nThis program will be followed by a public reception and book signing on the plaza. \nAbout the presenter:\nA renowned investigative journalist\, Julie Bindel has written extensively on a range of topics including violence against women\, the international surrogacy trade\, mail order brides\, trafficking\, and unsolved murders. She writes regularly for The Guardian\, New Statesman\, The International Business Times\, and The Spectator\, and frequently appears on the BBC and Sky News. She was Visiting Journalist at Brunel University\, UK (2013 – 2014) and is now on the Advisory Board of Byline.com. \nThis program builds upon the topic of ending mass incarceration addressed at our 2017 Spring Symposium and this year’s focus of our biannual Rothko Chapel’s Óscar Romero Award\, which recognizes courageous\, grassroots human rights advocacy. SUMMARY:Art and Incarceration: Poetry\, Theatre and Music in and about Captivity
DESCRIPTION:Concert\, Ensemble Pi\nFor this interdisciplinary performance\, Ensemble Pi presents music\, text\, and theater works that focus on the rise of mass incarceration\, the racial disparities it reveals\, and the emotional toll it takes on inmates and their families. The concert opens with Rzewski’s minimalist masterpiece\, Coming Together\, composed in the wake of the 1971 prison riots in upstate New York and powerfully expressing the frustration of life behind bars and anger about injustice. The evening’s highlight is the world premiere of Rikers Islandby New York composer Eleanor Cory\, inspired by the anthology These Are Hard Times for Dreamers. Joseph Assadourian\, the narrator for Coming Together\, will also perform an excerpt from his tragi-comic play\, The Bullpen\, based on his own incarceration. The performance closes with the sublime Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time (1941)\, composed and performed in the prisoner-of-war camp in Gorlitz\, Germany\, capturing the hardship and sadness of being in prison\, while still conveying optimism. \nAbout the presenters:\nEnsemble Pi is a new music collective that uniquely connects pressing social and political issues and the idioms of classical contemporary music. We began our Peace Concerts series 10 years ago in response to the invasion of Iraq\, and have since presented annual chamber music concerts giving voice to the struggle for peace. Every concert includes at least one commission\, as well as contemporary classical masterpieces to address the historical tradition of “socially conscious” compositions. In the past\, we’ve collaborated with visual artists\, writers\, journalists and actors – including South African artist William Kentridge and American journalists Naomi Wolf and Jeremy Scahill – and have featured the music of John Harbison\, Frederic Rzewski\, Shostakovich and Penderecki. Our series has voiced protest against the Iraqi invasion\, but also the censorship of media\, fracking\, the Apartheid\, and more. Performers include: Alexis Gerlach\, cello; Moran Katz\, clarinet; Idith Meshulam Korman\, piano; Airi Yoshioka\, violin; and Joseph Assadourian\, actor and narrator.

The rise of the Trump regime and the grassroots fascist right has stripped away much of the old window dressing and intensified the myriad attacks on people of color\, women\, poor people\, queer and trans people\, Muslims and Jews\, migrants\, and others. Millions want to begin fighting back or redouble their efforts. \nThose who are newer to the resistance might be looking to get plugged in\, learn new skills\, and sharpen their analysis. Those who have been in the game for a minute might be looking to find new inspiration\, new camaraderie\, new creativity\, and fresh perspective. All of us are looking for ways to move forward together in dark times. Our gatherings are more important now than ever. \nQ: Why Houston? \nA: Texas\, and especially Houston\, has a well-earned reputation for being the epicenter of the U.S. petrochemical industry\, the locus of reactionary political movements that were laughed at until they came to power\, and the home state of several war criminal presidents. Usually thought of as backward or irredeemable rather than hip\, radical\, or enlightened\, the whole region is often overlooked by much of the U.S. left that is concentrated on either coast. \nBut there is–and always has been–resistance here too: from the Black soldiers at Fort Logan who went to war against the police and Jim Crowe in 1917\, to the neighborhood that rebelled in 1977 when the cops who murdered Joe Campos Torres got off with a $1 fine; from hosting the first National Chicana Conference in 1971\, to hosting the National Women’s Conference (and the radical feminist protests outside of it!) in 1977; from direct actions against war profiteer Halliburton and logging company Maxxam in 2004-05 to resistance to the Tar Sands blockade against the Keystone XL pipeline a couple years ago; from the 2003 Radical Encuentro Camp to the 2011 Houston Anarchist Bookfair. Resistance in the belly of the beast has always been strong! \nTrue\, Houston has never had as large of a radical community as some places\, nor as many resources. But we’ve always forged ahead with the utmost spirit\, creativity\, and tenacity. In this tradition\, we are proud to welcome anarchists and other radicals from across the region to the 2017 Houston Anarchist Bookfair!

DESCRIPTION:Natalie M Smith visited Crimea\, Moscow and St. Petersburg\, Russia\, as a delegate of the Center for Citizen Initiatives in May 2017. She has a Ph.D. in Russian literature and linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin and has traveled in the Russian Federation since 1995. CCI\, the largest citizen diplomacy organization between the two nations\, determined this year to carry out a first-ever “information-gathering” delegation of American citizen investigators who would travel to major Russian cities to learn what is happening in Russia – since many allegations are made in US mainstream media and few know whether it is truth or misinformation.\n\nIn Moscow\, CCI delegates met with Mikhail Gorbachev\, ballistics expert Vladimir Kozin\, foreign policy expert Andrei Kortunov\, journalist Dmitri Babich and TV celebrity Vladimir Pozner to discuss areas of US and Russian concern. \nIn Yalta\, Simferopol and Sevastopol city officials\, school children\, Simferopol’s Rotary Club\, university students\, journalists and many others gave perspectives on Crimea’s 2014 referendum and Western sanctions\, extended by the EU to 2018. \nIn St.Petersburg entrepreneurs\, opposition politicians\, and educators shared their hopes for more cooperative work in the future. \nSharon Tennison’s website further describes her work: \nhttps://ccisf.org/ \nThe attached photo is during our meeting with Mikhail Gorbachev:

DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Latinx History Month\, the Center for the Healing of Racism will present a screening and discussion of “Latino Americans” on Thursday\, September 28\, 2017 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.  “Latino Americans” is the first major documentary series for television to chronicle the rich and varied history and experiences of Latinos and Latinas\, who have for the past 500-plus years helped shape what is now the United States of America.  With more than 50 million people\, Latinos and Latinas represent the largest minority group in the United States.\n\nThe screening will take place at the Center’s offices\, 3412 Crawford Street\, Houston\, TX 77004.  The event is free and open to the public (first 50 to RSVP). Donations are encouraged.  Registration required by emailing cfhr1@juno.com or calling (713) 520-8226. DESCRIPTION:Join the Houston Communist Party for our monthly Progressive Movie Night! This month our feature film will be Sergei Eisenstein’s classic\, “Battleship Potemkin”. \nWhen they are fed rancid meat\, the sailors on the Potemkin revolt against their harsh conditions. Led by Vakulinchuk (Aleksandr Antonov)\, the sailors kill the officers of the ship to gain their freedom. Vakulinchuk is also killed\, and the people of Odessa honor him as a symbol of revolution. Tsarist soldiers arrive and massacre the civilians to quell the uprising. A squadron of ships is sent to overthrow the Potemkin\, but the ships side with the revolt and refuse to attack. \nJoin us for this fantastic film! Refreshments will be provided… feel free to bring some to share. As always\, this event is free of charge. Plenty of parking – if you need transportation\, let us know. BYOB!

SUMMARY:A Dialogue About Tears We Cannot Stop
DESCRIPTION:Working as a white ally against racism is hard but not impossible.  One thing that doesn’t help the cause is saying “I don’t see color.”  The failure to see color only benefits white America.  A world without color is a world without racial debt.  Rather\, the most radical action a white person can take is to acknowledge privilege\, to admit that in the institutional and deep psychological structures of the United States\, the underlying assumption is that white lives are worth more than black lives. \nHelp the Center for the Healing of Racism develop better allies by participating in a dialogue about the book Tears We Cannot Stop: A Sermon to White America by Michael Eric Dyson.  Dr. Dyson is a Professor of Sociology at Georgetown University\, an ordained minister\, author of 20 books\, a writer for the New York Times\, and an editor for both The New Republic and ESPN’s The Undefeated Ebony.\n\nPlease join us on Tuesday\, August 29\, 2017 from noon to 2:00 pm -or- Wednesday\, August 30\, 2017 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.  The events will take place at 3412 Crawford Street (corner of Holman)\, Houston\, TX 77004.  The events are free and open to the public but registration is required.
