DESCRIPTION:On the Beach is a 1959 American post-apocalyptic science fiction drama film from United Artists\, produced and directed by Stanley Kramer\, that stars Gregory Peck\, Ava Gardner\, Fred Astaire and Anthony Perkins.[2] This black-and-white film is based on Nevil Shute‘s 1957 novel of the same name depicting the aftermath of a nuclear war.[3] Unlike the novel\, no blame is placed on whoever started the war; it is hinted in the film that the threat of annihilation may have arisen from an accident or misjudgment. \nIn early 1964\, in the months following World War III\, the conflict has devastated the Northern Hemisphere\, polluting the atmosphere with nuclear fallout\, killing all life there. Air currents are slowly carrying the fallout south; the only areas still habitable are in the far reaches of the Southern Hemisphere. \nFrom Australia\, survivors detect an incomprehensible Morse code signal coming from the West Coast of the United States. The last American nuclear submarine\, USS Sawfish\, under Royal Australian Navy command\, is ordered to sail north to the United States to attempt to make contact with the sender of the Morse signal. The submarine is commanded by Captain Dwight Towers (Gregory Peck)\, who must leave his new friend\, the alcoholic Moira Davidson (Ava Gardner). \nThe Australian government arranges for its citizens to receive suicide pills or prepared injections so they may end things quickly before there is prolonged suffering from radiation sickness. An Australian naval officer\, Peter Holmes (Anthony Perkins) and his wife\, Mary\, who is in denial about the impending disaster\, have a baby daughter. Assigned to travel with the American sub for several weeks\, Peter tries to explain to Mary how to euthanize their baby and then kill herself in case he is not yet home when the end comes; Mary reacts very emotionally to the prospect of killing her daughter and herself. \nOne scientist’s theory is that the radiation level near the Arctic Ocean could be lower than that found in the mid-Northern Hemisphere\, which might indicate the radiation could disperse before reaching the Southern Hemisphere. The theory is to be explored along with the submarine’s main mission. After sailing to Point Barrow\, Alaska\, they determine that radiation levels are\, on the contrary\, intensifying. \nThis is a long film and will be shown in two parts with a meal between \nPart I  3 pm – 4:15 PM \nMeal Break 4;15- 5:15 \nPart II  5:15-6:30

DESCRIPTION:Join Transition Houston at our upcoming meeting on Tuesday\, August 1st as we present generating your own power from solar energy and discuss the value of low impact design. \nSocializing starts at 6:30pm and the meeting begins at 7:00pm at the Haven’s Center\, 1827 W Alabama St\, Houston\, TX 77098. We hope to see you! Bring a friend! \nGenerating your own power from solar energy is one way to reduce your demand on fossil fuels and build a more resilient community. \nWe welcome Bill Swann\, Independent Solar Designer\, speaker and teacher who will present an introductory talk about residential solar energy systems\, the future of solar energy\, Home Energy Audits\, designing a solar power system\, reducing your energy demand and what measures you can take to make your home more energy efficient. \nWe’ll also be joined by Kathleen English\, owner/ principle of English Architects who will focus on Low Impact Design (LID) and share details on green and high-performance design solutions. Kathleen English is a member of the AIA and a LEED Accredited Professional. She owns a home in West University with her architect husband that features several green building options including closed cell foam insulation\, geothermal\, a 1\,000+ gallon rain tank located under the new pervious driveway. Interior finishes include the reuse of hardwood floors and trim\, and the use of reclaimed\, recycled\, and local materials for the majority of the new finishes. The lighting power density including all lights\, fans\, and exterior lighting is .45/square foot–achieved through the extensive use of new LED fixtures and retrofits.

They will share photos and stories from their experiences after staying with families\, meeting with Israeli and Palestinian peace activists and non-governmental organizations and experiencing life on both sides of the separation barrier. \nCome and join us\, experience life today in the area and learn about the struggles and hopes for the region. \nTwo Quakers from Live Oak Friends Meeting in Houston have recently returned from an interfaith delegation to Palestine and Israel. They and twenty-eight other participants from the United States\, Canada and the UK had the unique opportunity to hear directly from Palestinians and Israelis regarding the role of the United States in the pursuit of a just peace. The US government is the most dominant international player in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. \nBridget Lois Jensen is a second-generation Houstonian with a family history of service to the people of the city. Believing that Houston’s diversity is an asset only if the various communities develop relationships with one another\, she became involved in interfaith and cross-cultural activities with such organizations as Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston and the Center for the Healing of Racism. About her trip\, Ms. Jensen says\, “Though peace through political means has been elusive\, I witnessed a visceral hope in the people we met who are living in the midst of the conflict. I saw how their resiliency\, courage\, and commitment to preserving human dignity feed this hope and inspire individuals from various countries who accompany them. I too have been inspired and I want to share their stories and my experience so others will want to join this community of hope.” \nAlex McDonald is an entrepreneur and a Quaker committed to the American values of freedom and equality. Having been a student of the Israeli / Palestinian conflict for many years\, Mr. McDonald is grateful to have had the opportunity to see first-hand the implications of U.S. policies and to be able to separate fact from fiction in what we hear in the news. DESCRIPTION:The Center for the Healing of Racism presents “Race: The Power of an Illusion\,” a powerful three-part documentary series that explores the phenomenon we call Race.  Each weekly session begins with the screening of one of the three episodes of the series\, originally aired by PBS in 2003.  Each week’s screening will be followed by a dialogue about the ideas presented in the film.  “Race – The Power of an Illusion” questions the very idea of race as biology\, suggesting that a belief in race is no more sound than believing that the sun revolves around the earth.  \n \nThe series will be held at the Houston Baha’i Center\, 2419 Fannin Street\, Houston 77004.  The dates are as follows:\n \nEpisode 1\,  August 2 — 7-9 PM:  “The Difference Between Us” examines the contemporary science – including genetics – that challenges our common sense assumptions that human beings can be bundled into three or four fundamentally different groups according to their physical traits.\n \n\nEpisode 2\,  August 9 – 7-9 PM:  “The Story We Tell” uncovers the roots of the race concept in North America\, the 19th century science that legitimized it\, and how it came to be held so fiercely in the western imagination. The United States has surrounded China with 400 military bases in an almost perfect “noose”. \n  \nIn a new documentary set to air on Sunday night\, The Coming war on China\, award-winning journalist and filmmaker John Pilger challenges the notion of the world’s newest\, biggest trading nation as an enemy.  He also reveals the build-up to war taking place right on Beijing’s doorstep. \nFilmed over two years in the Marshall Islands\, Japan\, Korea\, China and the US\, Pilger highlights America’s secret history in the region. \n  \nThe eye-opening documentary reveals some surprising findings including that the people of the Marshall Islands were used as nuclear guinea pigs under the top secret “Project 4.1”. \nPilger also travels to Japan and Korea where he speaks to and observes people resisting the US expansion. \n  \nHe visits the Japanese island of Okinawa where 32 US bases are located and speaks to those who are challenging the world’s biggest military power. \nOn the Korean island of Jeju\, a world heritage site\, he witnesses farmers\, villagers\, priests and supporters who block gates to a base only to be removed every day. \nIn an interview with news.com.au ahead of the film going to air\, Pilger said he wanted to “help people make sense of a critical subject that is seldom more than a series of sound-bites.” \n“I say critical\, because a strange and dangerous atmosphere currently separates the world’s greatest military power\, the United States\, and a country that will almost certainly become the world’s greatest economic power\, China\,” he said. \n  \n“In the past few years\, the provocations\, threats\, contradictions and confusion have caused the kind of mistrust that make war by misunderstanding or by mistake or accident a real possibility. And both the US and China are nuclear-armed.” \nPilger also raises questions over whether it’s Beijing we should really be worried about. \n“China is surrounded by 400 US military bases in what one strategist describes as a ‘noose’\,” he said. \n“Many of these bases are on China’s doorstep\, armed with missiles\, naval battle groups\, nuclear bombers\, drones. US naval warships patrol just outside Chinese waters.” \nWhile the US has almost 1000 foreign bases\, China has just one which Pilger said was smaller and did not threaten California. \n  \n  \n“ \n

SUMMARY:Palestinian Scientist speaks on Conflict Resolution
DESCRIPTION:  \nMazin Qumsiyeh; he is a medical geneticist who trained in the U.S. and taught at Duke and Yale. He is a Palestinian Christian who teaches at Bethlehem University in Bethlehem in the West Bank and has co-founded a museum of natural history which just opened recently. He is interested in promoting awareness of the museum and its important work in educating children and young people about recycling\, sustainability\, and nature conservation. The museum is a very exciting endeavor that has already reached many children and youth there and draws a steady stream of visitors and volunteers. \n  \nThe topics Dr. Qumsiyeh covers include Palestinian Christian perspective on Islam and on teaching conflict resolution in the Peace Studies MA program at Bethlehem Bible College as well as presenting information about the flora and fauna of the Holy Land. He received the 2011 Social Courage Award from the Peace and Justice Studies Association and has written several books\, including one titled Sharing the Land of Canaan. He is interested in reaching beyond the usual political audiences for a Palestinian speaker and educating people here about the work of his museum and also topics related to religion and peace/conflict resolution studies. \n

DESCRIPTION:The Center for the Healing of Racism will hold its 23rd annual Juneteenth Ally Awards luncheon on Saturday\, June 24\, 2017.  This year’s award recipients are:\n\nDara Silverman\, who served as the founding director of Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ)\, a nationwide organization for white anti-racist allies.  Ms. Silverman has been promoting socioeconomic and racial justice for over 20 years.\nBlack Lives Matter Houston – For taking the lead in calling attention to the importance of Black lives\nUnited We Dream – For standing for the protection of Dreamers and Immigrants \nJustin Normand – Individual Initiative Award – For standing alone in calling attention to the lives of Muslims\n\nThe luncheon will be held at noon on Saturday\, June  24\, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church (Fondren Hall)\, 5501 Main Street\, Houston\, TX 77004.  Tickets are $50 per person and can be purchased through the Center for the Healing of Racism.  Contact: cfhr1@juno.com or (713) 520-8226.  Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to this event to aid in our work\, if you are unable to attend.\n\nThe mission of the Center for the Healing of Racism is to facilitate the healing of racism through education and dialogue in a safe and supportive environment\, in order to empower individuals

SUMMARY:HUG Talk -Integrating animals into row crop gardens.
DESCRIPTION:The history of the farm was always a place where animals and plants were rotated in the fields. The animal manure provided fertility for the plants to grow. In the last 75 years\, farming has steadily moved away from that. They have created new industries providing fertility through fossil fuel based fertilizers\, mined amendments and manure\, blood meal and bone meal collected from confined animal feeding operations. These are trucked to the farm\, spread with tractors and tilled into the soil\, destroying the microbiology of the soil food web. The nutrients in the soil and our food have plummeted and diet related disease has skyrocketed. \nLaughing Frog Farm is primarily interested in providing nutrient dense\, organic food. They raise sheep and chickens in rotation with the plants and the animals fertilize and aerate the soil. The soil at the farm is not tilled mechanically. The result is soil that has great structure\, fertility and crop yields. Glen Miracle started his first organic garden in Houston’s east end in 1978 and began Laughing Frog Farm in 2001. He will discuss the methods\, the research\, and the results of this journey.
