His idea of America is not our idea of America. \nAll eyes will be on Houston this weekend for the Super Bowl and this is the perfect time to show the President Trump and Congress that we do not agree with the direction they are taking our country. \nSo bring your signs and let’s exercise our First Amendment Rights and show what Houston is made of! \nEvent Details: \n3:00 pm meet-up at City Hall. We will march from City Hall to Minute Maid Park and finally end up at Discovery Green on the street Avienda De Las Americas. \nTransportation Options: \n2:00 pm I will be at the Park and Ride Post Oak location. The bus leaves at 2:15 pm and we will take bus #161 to get to City Hall. The fare is $1.25 there and $1.25 back so $2.50 roundtrip. \nRemember: \nThis is a peaceful protest. Please no aggressive actions. We can get our message across with numbers and signs and by voting next year. \nSince this is NOT a permitted event we must stick to the sidewalks. DESCRIPTION:Come learn the ancient art of fermentation! It’s a way to preserve food\, harvest probiotics\, spread food cultures\, and get creative with your food. In this introductory class\, we will cover the basics of the fermentation process\, taste homemade ferments\, and you will make and take home a mason jar of your first vegetable ferment! Your gut is already thanking you. The class is based on the teachings of Sandor Katz’ book Wild Fermentation\, an essential reference for budding home fermenters. This class will use locally grown produce whenever possible\, meaning that the vegetables we ferment in class will change by the season! We have fermented cabbage\, beets\, carrots\, daikon radish\, green beans\, turnips\, mustard greens\, and more. These nutritious goods have been flavored with dill\, fennel\, oranges\, garlic\, and ginger. Come see what’s in season and make your own combination! \n10% of the proceeds to this class go to AIDA and Survival International. Two organizations that champion tribal peoples and defend their land and culture. As we celebrate their wisdom in our class we will also be sending support for their cultural practices to continue. \nScholarships are available. Experiential exercises\, small groups\, and one-to-one interactions build community and trust around the themes of:  \nAffirmation & Self Esteem \nCommunication & Cooperation \nCreative Conflict Resolution \nMission Statement: AVP is an all-volunteer organization offering experiential workshops that empower individuals to liberate themselves and others from the burden of violence. Our fundamental belief is that there is a “power for peace” in everyone and that this power works through individuals who are open to it to transform violence to nonviolence. DESCRIPTION:As part of a “Texas Tour\,” Medea Benjamin and Ann Wright will speak in Houston.  Medea will draw upon her first-hand knowledge of the Middle East to share her insights\, and she’ll introduce her latest book\, Kingdom of the Unjust; Behind the U.S.-Saudi Connection.  Ann was recently – once again – captured in international waters and imprisoned by the Israelis while attempting to reach shore on the Women’s Boat to Gaza.  She has also traveled to Japan\, Korea\, Russia\, Germany\, Greece\, and elsewhere this year and can speak on the human and environmental costs of war and militarism around the globe and the possible effects of a Trump administration’s policies on all of us. \nMedea Benjamin is the co-founder of the women-led peace group CODEPINK and the co-founder of the human rights group Global Exchange.  She has been an advocate for social justice for more than 40 years.  Described as “one of America’s most committed — and most effective — fighters for human rights” by New York Newsday\, and “one of the high profile leaders of the peace movement” by the Los Angeles Times\, she was one of 1\,000 exemplary women from 140 countries nominated to receive the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the millions of women who do the essential work of peace worldwide.  She is the author of nine books\, including Drone Warfare: Killing by Remote Control and Kingdom of the Unjust:  Behind the U.S.-Saudi Connection\, and her articles appear regularly in outlets such as The Huffington Post\, Common Dreams\, Alternet\, The Other Words\, and TeleSUR. \nAnn Wright is a 29-year US Army/Army Reserves veteran\, a retired United States Army colonel and retired U.S. State Department official\, known for her outspoken opposition to the Iraq War. She received the State Department Award for Heroism in 1997\, after helping to evacuate several thousand people during the civil war in Sierra Leone. She is most noted for having been one of three State Department officials to publicly resign in direct protest of the 2003 Invasion of Iraq. Wright was also a passenger on the Challenger 1\, which along with the Mavi Marmara\, was part of the Gaza flotilla. She served in Nicaragua\, Grenada\, Somalia\, Uzbekistan\, Kyrgyzstan\, Sierra Leone\, Micronesia and Mongolia. In December\, 2001 she was on the small team that reopened the US Embassy in Kabul\, Afghanistan. Self-chosen suffering is redemptive and helps the movement grow in a spiritual as well as a humanitarian dimension. The moral authority of voluntary suffering for a goal communicates the concern to one’s own friends and community as well as to the opponent.\nPrinciple 5: Avoid internal violence of the spirit as well as external physical violence. The nonviolent attitude permeates all aspects of the campaign. It provides a mirror type reflection of the reality of the condition to one’s opponent and the community at large. Specific activities must be designed to maintain a high level of spirit and morale during a nonviolent campaign.

DESCRIPTION:Each year\, Urban Harvest has perhaps the largest one-day fruit tree sale on the planet (at least\, no one knows of a bigger one)\, and it’s one of the best places to get fruit trees and berries that are selected specifically for the climate and soil conditions of the greater Houston area. \nBefore the sale\, be sure to check out the many varieties of trees and berries at urbanharvest.org\, so you’ll know how much space each needs\, when to plant and how to care for them\, and anything else to know before you make your selections. Special fruit tree classes are also listed there. Advice will also be available at the sale itself. \nMany of the tree varieties sell out by 11 am\, so plan on arriving early. However\, some of the unsold trees\, plus tropical plants that are best to plant in March or later\, may be available later in March at the farmers market on Eastside St.  More details on that will also be on the Urban Harvest web site.

The new road on the west side of Almeda was opened and you are now able to make a left from Almeda (if going south) onto the property at 6501 Almeda Road. However\, the city is still working on the entrances and the slope of the road as you enter the main entrance off of Almeda is still very steep. The city will continue to work on the entrances and will try to stabilize and clean-up both Almeda entrances. PLEASE USE CAUTION as you come into the entrances due to the high slope/grade of the road! SUMMARY:Conflict Transformation and Nonviolent Communication Workshop

DESCRIPTION:Syrian regime\, Russian\, and Iranian-backed forces have taken control of 98% of Aleppo\, Syria. Civilians\, aid workers\, and activists in East Aleppo are sending out “final messages” to the world as pro-regime forces continue to close in on the city. \nSome 100\,000 civilians are crammed into 2 small districts awaiting a massacre after pro-regime military dominated by Iran-backed foreign fighters and Russian warplanes made rapid gains in East Aleppo over the past two weeks. Mass executions have been reported in multiple areas that the regime seized.  \nToo many of our elected officials are silent as genocide destroys lives. Together\, let’s call on the White House and Congress to rescue the 100\,000 civilians still trapped in Aleppo and to allow humanitarian organizations to safely provide aid. Together\, let’s answer the millions of cries for help with a message of hope.
