DESCRIPTION:The 11th anniversary of the Gandhi Peace Walk in Houston is set for 4:45 PM on Sunday Oct 2\, 2016. On-line registration is now open. Please register at the website: http://www.GandhiLibrary.org.  Please participate and make this 11th anniversary walk the largest so far!  The Grand Marshal this year is Mr. Swatantra Jain. \nThe walk will start and end at the Miller Outdoor Theater (MOT) in the Hermann Park. The route is around the McGovern Centennial Gardens on to the Marvin Taylor Trail inside Hermann Park\, about 5K. The end of the walk will signal the start of the “1000 Lights for Peace”\, an international cultural program\, now a tradition in Houston\, concluding with the spectacular lighting of 1000+ candles.  Please plan to walk for peace\, and attend the program. \nPlease register for the walk by Sep 23 to allow time to plan for T-shirts\, water\, security detail\, etc. Please specify your T-shirt size when registering. There is a request for a $20 donation per adult and $10 per student\, however any amount is welcome. Donations are optional; your participation is more important. You may pay online\, bring a check on Oct 2 made out to “Mahatma Gandhi Library” or bring cash. \nCarpooling to Hermann Park is recommended. Free parking is available in several lots in the Park including the Zoo lot; paid garage parking is next to the Museum of Natural Science. The Centennial Gardens lot can be reached from Hermann Drive. There may be street parking available on Hermann Drive. The check-in desk at MOT will open at 3:45 PM. Please arrive early to find parking\, collect your T-shirt\, water and to get set for the walk. DESCRIPTION:AVP BASIC WORKSHOP – THE ALTERNATIVES TO VIOLENCE PROJECT\nSEPTEMBER 30 TO OCTOBER 2\, 2016 (FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY) \nAVP is dedicated to reducing violence: on the streets\, at work\, in schools\, in homes\, and in relationships everywhere \nAVP provides tools for creative\, nonviolent resolution to conflicts used by peace workers such as Mohandas Gandhi\, Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, Jesus of Nazareth\, and many others\nThe Basic AVP Workshop is fun and empowers personal growth—an interactive\, intensive\, 2½-day experience that hones interpersonal conflict-resolution skills. Experiential exercises\, small groups\, and one-to-one interactions build community and trust around the themes of: \n\nAffirmation & Self Esteem\nCommunication & Cooperation\nCreative Conflict Resolution\n\nMission Statement: AVP is an all-volunteer organization offering experiential workshops that empower individuals to liberate themselves and others from the burden of violence. Our fundamental belief is that there is a “power for peace” in everyone and that this power works through individuals who are open to it to transform violence to nonviolence. DESCRIPTION:THE BURNIN’ is an a’capella musical–or NeoSpiritual–fusing styles from The Blues and Jazz to Spoken Word and Hip Hop\, inspired by the 1940 Rhythm Club Fire of Natchez\, MS and the 2003 E2 Club Stampede of Chicago\, IL. Following a group of clubgoers before\, during and after two reimagined U.S. club tragedies\, THE BURNIN’ straddles time to explore personal and communal definitions of freedom\, survival and identity during times of change. \nSYNOPSIS: It’s 1940 in the fictional City of Antebellum. As the African American community prepares for the return of hometown hero Band Man to the local juke\, the White community organizes it’s Annual Pilgrimage Pageant; a celebration of Southern hierarchy as it was “Before the War.” Fast forward 85 years and post-Great Migration urban residents of Sittay gather to critique the policies and politics behind contemporary headlines at a local hip hop spot. SUMMARY:Climate Reality Leadership Corps Training
DESCRIPTION:Building on the momentum from COP 21\, The Climate Reality Project will be conducting an intensive three-day training\, led by its Chairman Al Gore\, running August 16–18 in Texas. The training will bring together pioneers\, change agents\, and proven leaders from across business\, government\, and civil society sectors to enable participants to develop the skills\, relationships\, and connections to help implement the agreement reached in Paris. \nThe Texas training will be the 33rd Climate Reality Leadership Corps training\, and will welcome hundreds more leaders to the network. It will address the impacts that climate change is already having on the state\, from droughts to floods\, as well as the intersection between climate change risk and Texas’ more vulnerable populations. Sessions will also address renewable energy in Texas\, including the growth of wind energy\, and the enormous potential for solar. \nIn December 2015\, leaders from over 190 governments met in Paris for the UN’s COP 21 climate talks to create a historic agreement to limit the greenhouse gas emissions driving climate change and keep average planet-wide temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius while pursuing efforts to keep warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The conference marked a global turning point on climate change\, not only for the extraordinary agreement that world leaders reached in Paris\, but also for the unprecedented number of citizens speaking up all around the world\, demanding bold action to address the climate crisis and making this landmark agreement possible. \nWorking alongside partners throughout the climate community\, Climate Reality’s trained activists and supporters were instrumental in engaging and mobilizing millions worldwide to speak up for a strong agreement at COP 21 long before negotiators arrived in Paris. And at the heart of this effort were members of the Climate Reality Leadership Corps\, a global network of activists and influencers founded by Climate Reality Chairman and former US Vice President Al Gore. With the 2006 release of his Academy Award-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth\, Vice President Gore created a new approach to climate outreach\, speaking directly to audiences – as one concerned citizen to another – about the reality of climate disruption and how we can solve it. DESCRIPTION:Christ the King Evangelical Lutheran Church invites you to the 2016 Creation Care Fest – Environmental Extravaganza on Saturday\, Aug. 13. This year’s theme is Connections between People and Nature. The grassroots Aztec dance group is dedicated to nurturing and preserving the indigenous cultures of México\, as well as showing how dance can foster unity and connectedness between all cultures. \nThe series continues with a performance by Walagante at 7 p.m. on Thursday\, July 14. The Houston-based ensemble features Garifuna music\, which relies on drums and maracas. This style of music was declared a “masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity” by UNESCO in 2001. \nThe Rothko Chapel closes the series at 7 p.m. on Thursday\, Aug. 11\, with Wayanay Inka. SUMMARY:Kashmir cries for justice
DESCRIPTION:According to Amnesty International\, as of June 2015 no member of the Indian security forces has been tried in civil courts for thousands of human rights violations committed against the oppressed people of Kashmir in the past three decades. We appeal to the people of conscience to join hands to hold the Government of India accountable for its crimes against humanity.\nOn July 23rd\, we will gather in Houston and speak on behalf of the 12 year old girl who\, last week\, was stripped in front of her family. We will raise our voice on behalf of a brother and sister who were taking their ailing mother to the hospital but on the way\, the Indian forces molested the sister and knocked the brother unconscious while the ailing mother’s pleas were answered by batons. We will cry on behalf of the 14 year old girl who’s dreams to become a doctor were shattered when pallets fired from the gun of an Indian soldier blinded her for the rest of her life and many hundreds like her\, who have partially or permanently lost their eyesight to these lethal pallets. We will shed tears for the innocent lives that have fallen to the bullets of the Indian guns in the last 10 days and tens of thousands in the last three decades. We will speak on behalf of the  parents who are in perpetual and painful grief for their missing children. We will  ask for the identity of the dead in the un-marked mass graves. We will demand justice for the scores of women and minor girls of Kunan and Poshpora villages of Kashmir who were mass and gang raped on a cold night of February 1991 by the Indian Army.\n\nOn July 23rd\, we will raise our voices in solidarity with countless people in and outside of Kashmir and say ‘No’ to injustice and ‘Yes’ to peace. DESCRIPTION:At Main Street Theater we are currently running 2 plays that have\, sadly\, turned out to be incredibly timely with all that seems to be falling apart in our world: \nRFK: A Portrait of Robert Kennedy and Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-A** Wit of Molly Ivins.  (The shows run in repertory\, alternating days) through August 14. \n  \n“When we decided to mount these two shows about important individuals in American political life\, we didn’t know just how timely and timeless their stories would be\,” says Main Street Theater Founder and Artistic Director Rebecca Greene Udden.  “Of course\, anyone who follows Texas Politics knows that nothing has changed since Molly Ivins covered it with such wit and insight during her time with the Texas Observer\, and her commentary is just as sharp and entertaining as ever.  We chose to pair Molly’s story with Bobby Kennedy’s thinking that it would resonate with the current Presidential Election\, little knowing that recent national events would put his thoughts about civil rights into such clear and powerful perspective.  Both these plays – and the individuals who inspired them – are great reminders of the impact of civic passion combined with eloquence and intelligence.” \nAbout RFK: A Portrait of Robert F. Kennedy \nBy late summer\, 1964\, Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy was a deeply wounded man.  Still in shock and consumed with grief and guilt over the assassination of his older brother\, he was at a critical juncture in his life.  The 1964 presidential election was approaching\, and President Johnson\, who had been dangling the possibility of the vice-presidency to RFK\, finally called Kennedy over to the White House to inform him of his decision.  The result of that meeting and the subsequent direction for the next\, and last\, four years of his life are the focus of RFK: A Portrait of Robert Kennedy.   “Robert F Kennedy has always been a political hero of mine\,” says actor Joel Sandel who plays the role.  “However\, it wasn’t until I started digging into his personal history\, in preparation for this play\, that I was struck by what a profoundly good man he was.  His very personal rhetoric spoke to the average citizen in a way that touched the very soul of the nation.  He was also one of the rare political figures who had the ability to experience genuine ‘heart changes’ in the way he saw the world and viewed his responsibility as a citizen of the U.S. and of the world.”

The grassroots Aztec dance group is dedicated to nurturing and preserving the indigenous cultures of México\, as well as showing how dance can foster unity and connectedness between all cultures. \nThe series continues with a performance by Walagante at 7 p.m. on Thursday\, July 14. The Houston-based ensemble features Garifuna music\, which relies on drums and maracas. This style of music was declared a “masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity” by UNESCO in 2001. \nThe Rothko Chapel closes the series at 7 p.m. on Thursday\, Aug. 11\, with Wayanay Inka. Nestora is touring the United States in her Campaign to give  face and name to the prisoners. Prisoners are not a statistic but are real people with families and rights but go unnoticed by people. \nNestora Salgado is one of the founders of the Community Police of the people located in the state of Guerrero\, Mexico. The Community Police was formed in response to abuses of all kinds of organized crime part of the complicity of the police and local authorities. \nNestora will come to Houston on 11 and July 12\, 2016. She is touring different states of the Union spreading the struggle for the liberation of several community police officers who are still prisoners in Mexican jails.
