In this time of marked polarization in our communal life\, the authors embarked on an experiment\, attempting in-depth discussions that probed their deep differences about serious topics\, with the ultimate goal of promoting constructive engagement\, enhanced understanding\, and more compassion among people with different identities\, beliefs\, and practices.

DESCRIPTION:A year ago\, our ministers directed church staff to change the Sunday lunch menu to plant-based food. What inspired them to act?   For a year\, our church’s Climate Action Team has hosted monthly plant-based potlucks.   The potlucks turn out five times as many participants as the monthly lectures that we used to hold. That’s inspiration! \nEating plant-based for our climate will help as much as solar\, reports Project Drawdown.  Plus\, health experts are encouraging us all to eat more plant-based foods.  Eating more plant-based foods makes it easy for everyone to help the planet and their own health. DESCRIPTION:This Monday\, July the 3rd\, is not only our day of national celebration of independence from the British Empire.  Monday is also the 52nd birthday of JULIAN ASSANGE\, imprisoned for over four years in London\, for defending the freedoms of speech and freedom of press which our Founders enunciated in our Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights.   The US government seeks to prosecute Assange for his legitimate journalistic activity that exposed war crimes\, corruption\, and abuses of power. The prosecution of Assange under the Espionage Act is inherently illegitimate.  His “crime” was to publish classified documents exposing the war crimes of the western military establishment — the same charge the U.S. government leveled fifty years ago against Daniel Ellsberg\, who just passed on June 16. \n\n\n\nThis Monday\,  Assange Defense has called for ‘banner drop’ rallies ALL AROUND THE WORLD for Julian’s freedom.  Here in Houston\, we’ll meet at 4:30 PM Monday at the Montrose bridge over highway I-59.  We’ll hoist a 10′ banner and signs\, rallying support from motorists heading home for the Independence Day holiday.  You are welcome to bring your own signs and flags.  Freedom for Julian Assange is freedom for all of us!  (Find convenient parking on Autrey Street\, one short block south of the I-59 Freeway).  \n\n\n\nJulian Assange\, political prisoner

Vernon St.\, Houston\, TX 77006.  Lunch will be served.This year’s Honorees are: \nReparations4Slavery\, a portal for white families walking the path of racial healing through engaging in direct repair.  Lotte Lieb Dula created this portal when she learned that her ancestors had been enslavers.  She wanted to make amends for their behavior and help other people who are interested in doing the same. \nPure Justice\, an organization that advocates for criminal justice reform and exonerating falsely accused and convicted inmates outside of those placed on death row.   The founder\, RoShawn Evans\, had personal experience as an innocent man accused and convicted of a crime\, and found it very difficult to get anyone or any group to help him exonerate himself. \nIsmaili Civic Houston\, the Houston arm of the Shia Ismaili Muslim community devoted to serving humanity by rendering voluntary service to improve the quality of life of the community\, regardless of faith\, gender\, and background. \nSponsorship levels range from $1\,200 to $50 for students. Because of her personal connection to Uvalde\, Sarah wanted to do something to commemorate the one year anniversary. The Robb Elementary shooting is both the 3rd largest school shooting and the 9th deadliest gun massacre in the U.S. \nSarah\, Tracie\, Saumil\, and Soufiane are offering a special free sound bath healing and labyrinth walk and bubbles event to raise the vibration of Uvalde\, a community that is known as the Honey Capitol of the World and Tree City and is an entry to beautiful rivers and the country of Mexico. DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join an online discussion series built around 15-minute videos featuring interviews with US faith leaders\, representatives of climate-impacted communities from the global South\, and presentations by UN officials and other experts. The videos walk viewers through four key climate policy issues that intersect with universal faith concerns for vulnerable and marginalized people. The series focuses on how climate change is impacting the core ministries of faith communities around the world\, how those impacts will increase in the future\, and why these impacts create an imperative for people of faith to advocate for strong US climate action.  A discussion guide is included that asks participants to think deeply about how their own local faith community’s direct service programs intersect with climate impacts\, and how knowledge and experiences gained through these programs might help to inform climate policy. DESCRIPTION:We now have a wide window of opportunity to make real\, lasting changes for clean energy and reducing carbon pollution. The Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law are investing billions of dollars to build clean energy sources\, electrify school buses\, cap orphaned wells\, and much\, much more.  In addition\, there are many incentives for households\, and houses of worship\, to invest in energy efficiency improvements and renewable energy.  People of faith therefore play a vital role in determining how federal funds are spent and the quality of the investments made. SUMMARY:Race\, Racial Identity and Racism in Early Childhood
DESCRIPTION:Research shows that children develop racial biases between ages 2-4.  Explicitly discussing race and racism in developmentally appropriate ways is an important step in creating an anti-racist environment. Moreover\, nurturing racial pride benefits children of color socially\, cognitively\, and academically. \nPlease join the Center for the Healing of Racism for “Race\, Racial Identity and Racism in Early Childhood\,” a Saturday afternoon workshop for parents\, teachers and others who work with young children\, on May 6\, 2023\, 2:00-4:00 PM.  The workshop\, led by Dr. Flóra Faragó\, will guide us to a better understanding of how we can create nurturing environments where all children are supported and affirmed.  The program will take place at 3412 Crawford Avenue\, Houston\, TX 77004. \nDr. Faragó\, is an Associate Professor in Human Development and Family Studies at Stephen F. Austin State University.
