SUMMARY:Making Houston a Resilient City – How Houses of Worship Can Help
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, May 6\, 4 p.m.\, online & Congregation Emanu El\n\n \n  The Interfaith Environmental Network of Houston invites you to consider the challenges and opportunities that lie before Houston\, a key city in the global response to changing weather patterns\, emerging economies and changing consumer preferences and needs.\n\n \n  The future of Houston as a serious competitor in the global marketplace lies in many of the choices that will be made in the next few years. Are we ready to take our place as a truly world-class city\, showing the way for the world\, or will we be left behind? Houses of worship will have a key role to play in resilience.  Resilience requires knowledge and the will to find a different way\, and spiritual conviction and strength are absolutely necessary to achieve this.\n\n \n  In this presentation\, Jim Blackburn will discuss the scope of current problems\, some ideas to bring resilience to our community in the future\, and the role of houses of worship could play in realizing this future.  But\, this future can only be achieved by personal commitment and action\, and to reach it\, we all are going to have to come together and act for the common good\, a great challenge for the faith community.\n\n \n  Jim is a Professor in the Practice in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Rice University\, co-director of Rice University’s Severe Storm (SSPEED) Center and a Faculty Scholar at Rice’s Baker Institute. He is both an environmental lawyer and planner and has written two books about the Texas coast. After Jim’s talk\, there will be time for Q&A.\n\n \n  Please register for this event;\n\n \n https://www.eventbrite.com/e/making-houston-a-resilient-city-how-houses-of-worship-can-help-tickets-44393458028\n\n \n  Congregation Emanu el is located at 1500 Sunset Blvd. For more information\, please contact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Socialist Reading Group: Happy Birthday\, Karl Marx!
DESCRIPTION:Karl Marx has achieved a lasting global impact\, one that is greater and wider than any other philosopher before or afterwards. The Smithsonian Magazine published an article titled “Karl Marx Is the World’s Most Influential Scholar”. The article is based on a study and paper in Nature. Several information scientists from Indiana University Bloomington came to that conclusion based on how often Marx’s work was cited plus the number of works. \nAfter the global financial crisis of capitalism in 2008\, Marx was often cited to help explain the crisis. Marx is relevant because his work is based on science and an advanced method of critical analysis in philosophy and economics. \nWe need Marx now more than ever to help explain the nature of capitalism and the internal dynamics of its own destruction. Join us for a discussion on Marx’s legacy and contributions.

SUMMARY:Break Free From Plastics US Grassroots Tour: Houston
DESCRIPTION:EARTHWORKS\, one of #breakfreefromplastic member orgs in the US\, has organized a speaking tour with communities and stakeholders in the frontline affected by plastics pollution in key places i.e. Texas\, Louisiana\, Pennsylvania\, and Washington D.C. The tour seeks to dig deeper into the various processes where plastic pollution should be mitigated starting with extraction to production. \nTogether with Tejas Barrios and Texas Campaign for the Environment\, we are hosting a discussion panel on “closing the loop\, linking plastic production to fossil fuel extraction and the shale gas boom in the US. Plastics don’t just pollute the ocean\, they pollute from cradle to grave starting with the communities impacted by oil & gas extraction from which plastics are made. \nOur Grassroots Speaking Tour will feature two Global South activists\, Lakshmi Narayanan and Myrna Dominguez who will represent the voices of communities who are impacted by plastic pollution (fisherfolk communities from the Philippines and waste pickers from India). \nFor more information or questions please feel free to contact Priscilla Villa at pvilla@earthworks.org.

SUMMARY:Demonstration against George W. Bush
DESCRIPTION:George W. Bush will be honored at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Moral Courage Award Dinner at the Hilton Americas-Houston hotel\, 1600 Lamar St.\, on Thursday\, May 24. Bush should be imprisoned for life for war crimes and crimes against humanity–not honored for moral courage.\n\n\nAs Governor of Texas\, Bush approved more than 150 executions. As President\, his invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 led to the deaths of over 250\,000 people. His invasion of Iraq in 2003 led to the deaths of more than one million people. And U.S. troops remain in both countries today. \nThe Bush administration tortured and abused prisoners in these countries\, in Guantanomo Bay\, and in secret sites around the world. Bush promoted passage of the PATRIOT Act\, which increased unconstitutional surveillance and reduced civil liberties. Bush’s neglect during Hurricane Katrina contributed to the suffering and deaths of hundreds of poor people\, predominantly African Americans\, in New Orleans. As one commentator has remarked\, “The blood on Bush’s hands will never dry.” \nA protest against Bush and will be held outside the Hilton Americas-Houston hotel\, 1600 Lamar St.\, on Thursday\, May 24\, from 5 pm until 9 pm. Please join us in condemning Bush’s actions as president and any efforts to whitewash these actions. This action is being organized by Houston Socialist Movement\, Party for Socialism and Liberation\, Workers World Party\, Young Communist League\, and other organizations (list in formation). SUMMARY:Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper - Facts and Fears: Hard Truths from a Life in Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:*A copy of DNI James Clapper’s book Facts and Fears is included in the cost of every ticket.* \n*If possible\, please register in advance as this event may reach capacity.* \nWhen he stepped down in January 2017 as the fourth United States director of national intelligence\, James Clapper had been President Obama’s senior intelligence adviser for six and a half years\, longer than his three predecessors combined. He led the U.S. intelligence community through a period that included the raid on Osama bin Laden\, the Benghazi attack\, the leaks of Edward Snowden\, and Russia’s influence operation during the 2016 U.S. election campaign. \nIn Facts and Fears: Hard Truths from a Life in Intelligence\, Clapper traces his career through the growing threat of cyberattacks\, his relationships with presidents and Congress\, and the truth about Russia’s role in the presidential election. He describes\, in the wake of Snowden and WikiLeaks\, his efforts to make intelligence more transparent and to push back against the suspicion that Americans’ private lives are subject to surveillance. \nFinally\, it was living through Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and seeing how the foundations of American democracy were–and continue to be–undermined by a foreign power that led him to break with his instincts honed through more than five decades in the intelligence profession to share his inside experience. Facts and Fears offers a privileged look inside the U.S. intelligence community and\, with the frankness and professionalism for which James Clapper is known\, addresses some of the most difficult challenges in our nation’s history. \nJames Clapper served as the fourth United States Director of National Intelligence–the United States’ top intelligence officer and President Obama’s senior intelligence advisor–from 2010 until 2017. Beginning his career as an enlisted Marine Corps reservist in 1961\, Clapper eventually became a three-star Air Force lieutenant general and director of the Defense Intelligence Agency\, retiring from uniformed service in 1995. In 2001 he returned to service\, becoming the first civilian director of the National Imaging and Mapping Agency just three days after 9/11. In 2007 he was appointed the Pentagon’s top intelligence official\, serving as an appointee for both the Bush and Obama administrations before President Obama appointed him as DNI. \nFor a video of Director Clapper testifying before the U.S. Senate about Russian interference in the 2016 election and how the U.S. should respond\, please click HERE. \nEvery ticket for this event includes a copy of James Clapper’s book Facts and Fears: Hard Truths from a Life in Intelligence which will be given to each attendee at the event. \nThis event is co-hosted with Brazos Bookstore
