SUMMARY:“Toxic Tour” of Houston
DESCRIPTION:Rothko Chapel Presents\, Offsite Program: “Toxic Tour” of Houston with t.e.j.a.s.\n9:15am – Meet at 1409 Sul Ross (Chapel Annex) for light breakfast and to board the bus\n10am-2pm – Tour (bring your own lunch)\nTicketed event\, $20 fee to offset transportation costs. Space is limited. \nJuan Parras and Yvette Arellano of Texas Environmental Justice Advocacy Services (t.e.j.a.s.) will lead a tour addressing toxic sites in and around the greater Houston community. \nPlease meet at 1409 Sul Ross (Chapel Annex) at 9:15am for light breakfast and to board the bus. The bus is equipped with restrooms and wifi. Bring your lunch with you to eat on the bus\, as the tour will continue through lunchtime. Please wear comfortable apparel and closed toed shoes for walking and muddy terrain\, as we will stop and explore some areas on foot.  \nt.e.j.a.s. originated the toxic tour over 20 years ago in Houston as an educational tool for individuals within and outside of the community to gain a further understanding of environmental justice issues. Pictures cannot easily convey the surreal site of this massive industrial complex\, nor the thick polluted air. Join us on a tour through the East End of Houston\, where some of the largest refineries and chemical plants surround neighborhoods and spew toxins into the air. Thousands of people live\, work\, and attend schools in the shadow of these facilities. \nThis program precedes the Rothko Chapel 2019 Symposium “Toward a Better Future: Transforming the Climate Crisis” taking place February 28 through March 2 in partnership with the University of St. Thomas. To learn more about topics and presenters included in the symposium\, click here. \nAbout t.e.j.a.s.:\nTexas Environmental Justice Advocacy Services (t.e.j.a.s.) is dedicated to providing community members with the tools necessary to create sustainable\, environmentally healthy communities by educating individuals on health concerns and implications arising from environmental pollution\, empowering individuals with an understanding of applicable environmental laws and regulations and promoting their enforcement\, and offering community building skills and resources for effective community action and greater public participation. Our goal is to promote environmental protection through education\, policy development\, community awareness\, and legal action.
