SUMMARY:The Walk for Mental Health Awareness
DESCRIPTION:The Walk for Mental Health Awareness – Houston is a community based event that helps raise awareness and funding for Greater Houston area non-profit agencies and programs that provide mental health services; creating an environment for our positive public dialogue. \n\nSpecial activities for Children \nMental Health Expo and door prizes start at 9:30 A.M. \n\nEveryday living can feel like a death sentence for those suffering with a mental illness. The physical\, mental and emotional suffering takes the joy out of life\, and has the potential to have life-long problems if left untreated. There is help and there is hope\, but you can only receive help by asking. The Walk for Mental Health Awareness–Houston is a celebration of the hope of life after mental illness and a call to action by people in our community. \nPlease visit http://www.thehoustonwalk.org/ for more information.

SUMMARY:Health Justice- Workers' Rights\, Work Life Balance and Being Good to Yourself
DESCRIPTION:Come to our gathering as we discuss health justice\, or how injustice and lack of action on various social justice issues worsens health outcomes and leads to higher health care costs.  For this month’s gathering\, we will discuss a few interrelated themes\, starting with labor and worker rights\, hostile work environments\, lack of work-life balance\, and its effect on health and health care costs.  Also to be discussed will be rethinking practices at schools and colleges with regard to extreme homework and study overloads\, and extreme busyness either imposed by other means such as city design\, or touted as a status symbol\, and why it is time to change our thinking and planning on this.  In living up to that ‘personal responsibility’ that proponents of our current immoral health care system love to ‘talk the talk’ about\, one of the best ways to really ‘walk the walk’ on this\, along with diet and exercise\, would be to re-evaluate not only our work environments and worker treatment\, but also look at how we can make it both feasible and fashionable to cut down on overwork and time overload from other areas of life.  I will give a brief presentation on these issues\, then open it up to all attendees to share their stories\, thoughts\, input\, suggestions\, etc. \n  \nMeeting will be held at: \nTarka Indian Kitchen\n721 W 19th St.\nHouston\, TX 77008

SUMMARY:The Earth Charter & Lutheran Social Statements
DESCRIPTION:Join Lisa Brenskelle\, head of the Lutherans Restoring Creation Team for the Texas Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA)\, for a talk on the Earth Charter.  The ELCA voted to endorse the Earth Charter at its national assembly in August. The Earth Charter\, while a completely secular document\, is an ethical framework for building a just\, sustainable\, and peaceful society. As such\, it’s precepts have much in common with Christian social teaching\, and indeed\, with the social teaching of many faiths. This first half of this talk will cover the Earth Charter\, its origins & principles\, as well as materials available from the Earth Charter Initiative. The second half of the talk will explain the relationship between Earth Charter principles & Christian social teaching\, using the social statements of the ELCA as a basis. Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com. Contact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com with any questions about this talk.
