DESCRIPTION:This is an invitation to join a powerful collective action. \nAfter more than two years of struggle to defend the Weelaunee forest in southeast Atlanta from the construction of a militarized police training facility\, the movement is at a crucial crossroads. This November\, there is a call for a mass action to halt construction on the site. We know the city won’t listen to the overwhelming desire of the people\, and the risks of inaction are far too great. With our future on the line and the whole world watching\, we’ll take a stand to bend the course of history. \nThis presentation will cover the history of the movement so far\, how we’ve arrived at the current conjuncture\, and help us get ready to join each other in November. SUMMARY:Interconnections with Soil\, Human Health and the Environment
DESCRIPTION:Soil is essential to all life and is important to human health in many ways. It can filter water\, provide nutrients and food\, store carbon\, and supply us with antibiotics to fight diseases. However\, soils are often mistreated by industrial agriculture and contaminated by environmental pollutants like oil spills which can directly affect human and environmental health. Sara Denison\, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rice University\, will discuss how soil contamination\, human health and the environment are all connected and ways contaminated soils can be cleaned up and restored. In addition\, she will discuss the health burden associated with exposure to particular contaminants found in soils around Houston and technology that she is researching that will help remove these contaminants from soil.
