SUMMARY:Native American Heritage Month
DESCRIPTION:The Center for the Healing of Racism honors Native American Heritage Month with a visiting exhibit from the American Indian Genocide Museum on Thursday\, November 9\, 2023 from Noon to 6:00 PM. An interactive dialogue with the museum’s founders Cheryl and Steve Meléndez will begin at 6:00 PM. The event will be held at 3412 Crawford Street\, Houston\, TX 77004. Parking is available in HCC Lot 9 at Crawford/Almeda and Holman. \nThe American Indian Genocide Museum is the only museum that documents the policy of extermination and the past and present struggles of the indigenous first peoples of the United States.  Museum staff conduct archival research throughout North America to uncover original documents that provide evidence of the intentional genocide of native peoples while also supporting actions to protect indigenous land\, rights\, and dignity.  The exhibit is a memorial to the victims of ethnic cleansing\, a genocide that continues to this very day. \nThe event is free and open to the public with donations appreciated. Registration is required. Register online at: https://www.centerhealingracism.org/event/american-indian-genocide-museum/

SUMMARY:From Underground to On the Grid
DESCRIPTION:Join Adrian Shelley\, Texas Office Director for Public Citizen\, as he delves into energy\, from underground to on the grid.  Texas has been an energy state for more than a century. But as the global energy market shifts away from fossil fuels and toward clean sources such as wind\, solar\, and battery storage\, Texas risks being left behind. At the start of the 21st century\, Texas pursued an all-of-the-above energy strategy that saw the largest investment in wind energy in history. More recently\, the fossil fuel industry has changed its tactics as it responds to the existential threat of climate change. Today we see political decision making that favors the entrenched business interests of the fossil fuel industry over average Texans. This explains why Texas lawmakers are not pursing common sense solutions to fixing Texas’ ailing electricity grid. These solutions include demand-side strategies such as energy efficiency and demand response\, which can stabilize our grid\, save consumers money\, and make homes more resilient to temperature extremes. Time for Q&A with the speaker will be provided. Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/from-underground-to-on-the-grid-tickets-737952103607.
