SUMMARY:Save a Life\, Sponsor a Family from Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Join Live Oak Friends\, in person or online\, on Sunday\, May 12 at 9:20am to hear a special Zoom presentation by North America for Ukraine (NA4U)\, a volunteer-led organization that works to help Ukrainians seeking refuge connect with approved Americans who can sponsor them.\nIt has been two years since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine\, and millions of Ukranians still face the daily threat of violence\, as well as freezing temperatures\, inadequate shelter\, heat and other supplies. Thousands of families have been forced to leave everything behind in search of safety and tens of thousands more are waiting for the opportunity. \n\nThere are two ways you can help Ukrainian families through sponsorship:\n\n \nA paper-sponsor is someone who only submits the paperwork to USCIS while the refugee lives with a verified host\, usually a family member or friend. \n\n \nA hosting sponsor provides accommodations and assistance with travel and filing necessary paperwork. Ukrainians are eligible to work immediately upon arrival and realistically may need housing support for 3-6 months while they establish themselves. \n\n\nNA4U has proudly helped thousands of families connect with sponsors but we are in dire need of more.

SUMMARY:Quaker Barter Fair
DESCRIPTION:Black Friday offers the challenge to BUY NOTHING!  The Quaker testimonies of Simplicity\, Community and Stewardship encourage Friends to find creative ways to care for the earth and each other\, and we want to extend this opportunity to others in the community.  Creating a space to practice thinking together in a new way about how we place value on objects and services within our community seems like a worthwhile way to observe the day after Thanksgiving.\nAnd it is a Fair\, with crafts\, games and other activities for families and chldren\, including\, but not limited to Holiday Potpourri\, Stone Art\, Origami\, Milkweed for Monarchs AND Music by Jim Presley: Blues and Native American Music\nTo get involved\, just come!   Bring a table\, shelf\, rug or blanket to display your goods or a sign that describes your service(s).   CHILDREN ARE WELCOME!  Children are often the best models of how this can work.  They have the ability to add value to an item by describing potential uses\, and the creativity to negotiate three-way trades.\nThere will be a designated area for “free” items that you are willing to give to whomever wants them.  Visitors may then use such items to barter and trade with if they wish.   At the end of the day all items remaining at the “Free Table” will be donated to a local charity.\nSchedule: \n12:30 PM – Open for table setup\n1:00 PM – Open to everyone – Games \, Crafts\, all day\n1:30 PM – Children’s Storytime:\n2:00 PM – 3:00 PM Concert-Jim Presley will play Traditional Blues\, Original Blues\, and Native American Music\n3:15 PM – Children’s Story Time: Milkweed & Monarchs\n\nWe will be observing Covid-19 precautions–event takes place outdoors with social distancing \nPlease bring your mask to wear when/if social distancing is not possible.

SUMMARY:Undeterred Movie\, online
DESCRIPTION:Undeterred is a documentary about community resistance in the rural border town of Arivaca\, Arizona. Since NAFTA\, 9/11 and the Obama and Trump administrations border residents have been on the front-lines of the humanitarian crisis caused by increased border enforcement build up. Undeterred is an intimate and unique portrait of how residents in a small rural community\, caught in the cross-hairs of global geo-political forces\, have mobilized to demand our rights and to provide aid to injured\, oft times dying people funneled across a wilderness desert. The film was made by Eva Lewis\, a resident of Arivaca and long time member of People Helping People in the Border Zone (PHP). Undeterred was created in close collaboration with the Arivaca community and members of PHP.\nLearn more and view the trailer here\nDownload and share the poster here\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81859004066?pwd=U3pwc1ZHb1l3aHRPRU1QSUtTWE9qQT09 \n

SUMMARY:Two Houston Quakers Visit Israel / Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Two Quakers have recently returned from an interfaith delegation to Palestine and Israel. They will share photos and stories from their experiences after staying with families\, meeting with Israeli and Palestinian peace activists and non-governmental organizations and experiencing life on both sides of the separation barrier. \nCome and join us\, experience life today in the area and learn about the struggles and hopes for the region. \nTwo Quakers from Live Oak Friends Meeting in Houston went with an interfaith delegation to Palestine and Israel. They and twenty-eight other participants from the United States\, Canada and the UK had the unique opportunity to hear directly from Palestinians and Israelis regarding the role of the United States in the pursuit of a just peace. The US government is the most dominant international player in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. \nBridget Lois Jensen is a second-generation Houstonian with a family history of service to the people of the city. Believing that Houston’s diversity is an asset only if the various communities develop relationships with one another\, she became involved in interfaith and cross-cultural activities with such organizations as Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston and the Center for the Healing of Racism. About her trip\, Ms. Jensen says\, “Though peace through political means has been elusive\, I witnessed a visceral hope in the people we met who are living in the midst of the conflict. I saw how their resiliency\, courage\, and commitment to preserving human dignity feed this hope and inspire individuals from various countries who accompany them. I too have been inspired and I want to share their stories and my experience so others will want to join this community of hope.” \nAlex McDonald is an entrepreneur and a Quaker committed to the American values of freedom and equality. Having been a student of the Israeli / Palestinian conflict for many years\, Mr. McDonald is grateful to have had the opportunity to see first-hand the implications of U.S. policies and to be able to separate fact from fiction in what we hear in the news. He thinks that the images from the trip will speak for themselves. \nBridget and Alex will share photos and stories from their experiences after staying with families\, meeting with Israeli and Palestinian peace activists and non-governmental organizations and experiencing life on both sides of the separation barrier. \nCome and join us\, experience life today in the area and learn about the struggles and hopes for the region.

SUMMARY:Investigating Russia 2017 Natalie M. Smith PH.D
DESCRIPTION:Natalie M Smith visited Crimea\, Moscow and St. Petersburg\, Russia\, as a delegate of the Center for Citizen Initiatives in May 2017. She has a Ph.D. in Russian literature and linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin and has traveled in the Russian Federation since 1995. CCI\, the largest citizen diplomacy organization between the two nations\, determined this year to carry out a first-ever “information-gathering” delegation of American citizen investigators who would travel to major Russian cities to learn what is happening in Russia – since many allegations are made in US mainstream media and few know whether it is truth or misinformation.\n\nIn Moscow\, CCI delegates met with Mikhail Gorbachev\, ballistics expert Vladimir Kozin\, foreign policy expert Andrei Kortunov\, journalist Dmitri Babich and TV celebrity Vladimir Pozner to discuss areas of US and Russian concern. \nIn Yalta\, Simferopol and Sevastopol city officials\, school children\, Simferopol’s Rotary Club\, university students\, journalists and many others gave perspectives on Crimea’s 2014 referendum and Western sanctions\, extended by the EU to 2018. \nIn St.Petersburg entrepreneurs\, opposition politicians\, and educators shared their hopes for more cooperative work in the future. \nSharon Tennison’s website further describes her work: \nhttps://ccisf.org/ \nThe attached photo is during our meeting with Mikhail Gorbachev:

SUMMARY:Presentation on Palestinian and Israeli Nonviolent Activism Against the Occupation
DESCRIPTION:Maxine Kaufman-Lacusta\, a Quaker Jewish activist and writer from Burnaby\, B.C.\, Canada will be in Houston to speak and do a presentation on nonviolence in Palestine.  She will share information about nonviolent activism by Palestinians and Israelis\, separately and together\, in challenging the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land–as this is a much under-publicized aspect of the Palestinian struggle–as well as ways in which “Internationals” can support these efforts. \nShe will also introduce her book: “Refusing to be Enemies: Palestinian and Israeli Nonviolent Resistance to the Israeli Occupation”.  The book is an interview-based study that presents the voices of over 100 practitioners and theorists of nonviolence\, the vast majority either Palestinian or Israeli\, as they reflect on their own involvement in nonviolent resistance and speak about the nonviolent strategies and tactics employed by Palestinian and Israeli organizations toward the occupation. \nMore info at http://refusingtobeenemiesthebook.wordpress.com \nCopies of Refusing to be Enemies will be available for purchase and signing.
