In a series of powerful\, unfiltered testimonials\, survivors tell their stories in their own words and describe how the bigoted rhetoric and policies of the Trump administration have intensified bullying\, discrimination\, and even violence toward them and their communities. \nWe hear from the family of Khalid Jabara\, who was murdered in Tulsa\, Oklahoma\, in August 2016 by a man who had previously harassed and threatened them because they were Arab American. Sethi brings us the story of Jeanette Vizguerra\, an undocumented mother of four who took sanctuary in a Denver church in February 2017 because she feared deportation under Trump’s cruel immigration enforcement regime. Sethi interviews Taylor Dumpson\, a young black woman who was elected student body president at American University only to find nooses hanging across campus on her first day in office. We hear from many more people impacted by the Trump administration\, including Native\, black\, Arab\, Latinx\, South Asian\, Southeast Asian\, Muslim\, Jewish\, Sikh\, undocumented\, refugee\, transgender\, queer\, and people with disabilities. \nA necessary book for these times\, American Hate explores this tragic moment in U.S. history by empowering survivors whose voices white supremacists and right-wing populist movements have tried to silence. It also provides ideas and practices for resistance that all of us can take to combat hate both now and in the future. \n\nArjun Singh Sethi is a community activist\, civil rights lawyer\, writer\, and law professor based in Washington\, DC. He works closely with Muslim\, Arab\, South Asian\, and Sikh communities and advocates for racial justice\, equity\, and social change at both the local and the national levels. His writing has appeared in CNN Opinion\, The Guardian\, Politico magazine\, USA Today\, and the Washington Post\, and he is featured regularly on national radio and television. He holds faculty appointments at Georgetown University Law Center and Vanderbilt University Law School\, and presently co-chairs the American Bar Association’s National Committee on Homeland Security\, Terrorism\, and Treatment of Enemy Combatants.

He led the U.S. intelligence community through a period that included the raid on Osama bin Laden\, the Benghazi attack\, the leaks of Edward Snowden\, and Russia’s influence operation during the 2016 U.S. election campaign. \nIn Facts and Fears: Hard Truths from a Life in Intelligence\, Clapper traces his career through the growing threat of cyberattacks\, his relationships with presidents and Congress\, and the truth about Russia’s role in the presidential election. He describes\, in the wake of Snowden and WikiLeaks\, his efforts to make intelligence more transparent and to push back against the suspicion that Americans’ private lives are subject to surveillance. \nFinally\, it was living through Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and seeing how the foundations of American democracy were–and continue to be–undermined by a foreign power that led him to break with his instincts honed through more than five decades in the intelligence profession to share his inside experience. Facts and Fears offers a privileged look inside the U.S. intelligence community and\, with the frankness and professionalism for which James Clapper is known\, addresses some of the most difficult challenges in our nation’s history. \nJames Clapper served as the fourth United States Director of National Intelligence–the United States’ top intelligence officer and President Obama’s senior intelligence advisor–from 2010 until 2017. Beginning his career as an enlisted Marine Corps reservist in 1961\, Clapper eventually became a three-star Air Force lieutenant general and director of the Defense Intelligence Agency\, retiring from uniformed service in 1995. In 2001 he returned to service\, becoming the first civilian director of the National Imaging and Mapping Agency just three days after 9/11. DESCRIPTION:Borderlines Volume Three Book Launch\n \nContinuing its tradition of celebrating communities from border regions in North America and South Asia\, Voices Breaking Boundaries (VBB) will launch the third and final installment of its internationally renowned anthology series. Borderlines Volume Three features original photos\, essays\, poetry and journalistic narratives that find commonalities\, and explore issues erupting across areas splintered by borders. \nThe evening features short readings by Oui Chatwara S. Duran\, Bruno Rios\, Roberto Tejada\, Mikaela Selley\, Stalina Villarreal and Gemini Wahhaj. Co-editors Margot Backus and Maria Gonzalez\, artistic director Sehba Sarwar and layout design artist Joshua Turner will be available to answer questions. \nBorderlines Volume Three is a culmination of a long-term project initiated in 2013 by Sehba Sarwar\, VBB’s Artistic Director and Founder. As in the two earlier volumes\, Volume Three also underscores challenges—specific and generic—of living in today’s world where movement is being curtailed.
