SUMMARY:"The Chinese Exclusion Act"
DESCRIPTION:The Center for the Healing of Racism will celebrate Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month on Wednesday\, May 18\, 2022 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM with a screening of “The Chinese Exclusion Act” at 3412 Crawford Street\, Houston\, TX 77004. The film will be followed by a facilitated dialogue. \nOn May 6\,1882 — on the eve of the greatest wave of immigration in U.S. history — President Chester A. Arthur signed into law a unique piece of federal legislation. Called the Chinese Exclusion Act\, it singled out\, as never before\, a specific race and nationality for exclusion\, making it illegal for Chinese workers to come to America\, and for Chinese nationals already here to ever become citizens of the United States. A deeply American story about immigration and national identity\, civil rights and human justice; about how we define who can be an American\, and what being an American means\, the film examines the economic\, cultural\, social\, legal\, racial and political dimensions of the law; the forces and events that gave rise to it; and the effects it had\, and continues to have\, on American culture and identify. \nThe event will be held IN-PERSON.  Free parking is available at Houston Community College lot #9 (Crawford & Holman). This event is free and open to the public with donations encouraged.  To reserve your seat\, please register at: https://www.centerhealingracism.org/event/asian-american-pacific-islander-heritage-month-film-screening-in-person/\n\nPlease Note: This event will not be offered virtually or recorded. Registration is REQUIRED and you must bring your registration confirmation to the event.

SUMMARY:Jewish American Heritage Month
DESCRIPTION:The Center for the Healing of Racism will commemorate Jewish American Heritage Month with a screening of the documentary “The Longest Hatred” on Wednesday\, May 11\, 2022 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM.  This event will be held IN-PERSON at 3412 Crawford Street\, Houston\, TX 77004.  Free parking is available at Houston Community College lot #9 (Crawford & Holman). \n“The Longest Hatred” traces anti-Semitism from its earliest manifestations in antiquity to ominous outbreaks in Germany\, Russia\, and elsewhere in the early 1990s. SUMMARY:"Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Villifies a People”
DESCRIPTION:In commemoration of Arab American Heritage Month\, the Center for the Healing of Racism will present a screening of the film: “Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Villifies a People” on Thursday\, April 28\, 2022 (6:30 to 8:30pm CDT). A facilitated dialogue will follow the screening. \nThis groundbreaking documentary dissects a slanderous aspect of cinematic history that has run virtually unchallenged from the earliest days of silent film to today’s Hollywood blockbusters. Featuring acclaimed author Dr. Jack Shaheen\, the film explores a long line of degrading images of Arabs – from Bedouin bandits and submissive maidens to sinister sheikhs and gun-wielding “terrorists” – offering devastating insights into the origin of these stereotypes that\, over time\, have contributed to prejudicial attitudes toward Arabs and Arab culture. \nThis event will be held IN PERSON at 3412 Crawford Street\, Houston\, TX 77004. It will not be offered virtually or recorded. Free parking is available at Houston Community College lot #9 (Crawford & Holman). The event is free and open to the public (donations encouraged)\, however\, REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.  Please register at: https://www.centerhealingracism.org/event/arab-american-heritage-month-screening-of-reel-bad-arabs-how-hollywood-villifies-a-people-in-person/ \nPlease Note: You must bring your registration confirmation for admission to the event.

SUMMARY:Racism in Transportation
DESCRIPTION:Access to safe\, reliable and affordable transportation is vital to all of us. Whether we travel in a car\, bus\, train\, bicycle\, wheelchair or on foot\, we can’t get to where we need to go — work\, school\, healthcare\, supermarket or socializing — without transportation.  All too often\, government transportation policies promote driving a car over other\, less-costly means of travel.  This has presented significant problems for Black and Latinx populations where car ownership is lower and decades of disinvestment in communities has resulted in poor transit\, walking or biking options.  Communities of color also bear the brunt of highway expansions\, which can destroy historic neighborhoods\, displace residents and and impact the health of those left behind.\n\nPlease join us on Wednesday\, June 2\, 2021\, 3:00-5:00 PM (CST) for a discussion on transportation policy and its role in systemic racism.  The discussion will be led by Oni K. Blair\, executive director of LINK Houston\, a nonprofit advocating for transportation equity.  The Zoom presentation is free and open to the public. Donations are encouraged.  Registration is required:  https://www.centerhealingracism.org/event/racism-in-transportation-a-zoom-dialogue/
