SUMMARY:A Faithful and Hopeful Response to Willful Climate Denial Policies
DESCRIPTION:Since January 2025\, the President\, his Congressional yes-men/women\, and the courts have been systematically overturning existing legislation and passing new limitations on successful climate policies\, withdrawing from global commitments\, and gutting scientific funding that was making a difference in combatting the climate crisis.  At the same time\, many within the faith community have remained hopeful and are taking steps to counter these negative influences from the current administration.   \n\n\n\nIn this webinar\, join Mel Caraway\, retired United Methodist pastor\, as he looks at positive steps that are being taken to combat ecological uncertainty. Time for interactive discussion with the speaker will be provided. \n\n\n\nPlease register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1981951471203. This virtual event will use the WebEx platform. Registrants will receive a separate e-mail with WebEx connection details.  All registrants will get a link to the recording of this talk. \n\n\n\nContact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com with any questions.

SUMMARY:Changing by Choice
DESCRIPTION:If we know what we need to do\, why do we fail to do it?This study invites us to apply this age-old question of faith to the problem of climate change. The study features videos recorded at the global climate negotiations in November 2025 and introduces the Global Ethical Stocktake\, a discussion framework developed in 2025 to guide a global conversation on the ethics of climate change. With grace and urgency\, this study will open space to ask hard questions and gain insights into the issue of climate change—and our responsibilities to each other. \n\n\n\nChanging by Choice considers climate change as it intersects with other core concerns for faith communities\, including hunger; migration; disaster response; and violent conflict. And\, using the Global Ethical Stocktake framework\, it brings your group into conversation with people in local communities around the world. \n\n\n\nJoin the discussion by registering on eventbrite at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/197982521350 \n\n\n\nContact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com with any questions about this class.

SUMMARY:Via Creationis: Walking the Way of Creation
DESCRIPTION:Gain a richer appreciation of the great mystery of God’s creation in this guided walk in Hermann Park\, using the park’s beautiful natural setting to prayerfully ponder this mystery and praise our Creator for the marvels of Creation. \n\n\n\nThe Via Creationis (the way of creation) commemorates the mystery of Creation by reading side by side the two sacred books that God wrote: the Book of Scripture and the Book of the Cosmos\, as theologians have taught throughout history. SUMMARY:Earth and Soul book discussion group
DESCRIPTION:Facing directly into the devastation of climate chaos and biodiversity loss\, Earth and Soul takes readers on a soul journey through grief and loss to also claim the beauty\, joy and possibilities available when we reconnect with Earth. As we follow the author’s compelling personal experiences and engagingly lyrical stories of whales\, cedars\, sparrows\, and more\, we see the necessity and urgency of learning from the wisdom of our kin in the natural world. \n\n\n\nWriting at the intersection of spirituality\, ecology\, and story\, the book charts a course for living deeply connected to Earth in ways that are both vitally important for and uniquely suited to these times. Even now when the world as we once knew it is ending and a new story lies beyond what we can envision\, we hold the potential to lay stepping stones toward a diverse and vibrant world of oneness and mutual flourishing. \n\n\n\nJoin a virtual small group to read and discuss this thought-provoking and inspirational book each week during the Season of Creation (observed by Christians from Sept. 1 through Oct. 4). If you can’t attend every week\, attend as you are able. Contact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com with any questions. \n\n\n\nRegister for Earth and Soul book discussion group on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1506035987179.   \n\n\n\nContact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com for more information.

SUMMARY:Restoration\, Renewal & Regeneration
DESCRIPTION:Restoration and Renewal are somewhat synonymous activities\, and Regeneration in the case of nature seems to occur when damage ceases and nature can then continue its process.  Here on Earth\, with our modern civilization that is now so huge that it has such a significant effect on nature\, scientists are sounding the alarm and people are responding.  Steve Stelzer\, as the former program director (now retired) at Houston’s Green Building Resource Center has been exposed to many points of view while at the center\, and will point out some issues to be aware of while deciding how to engage in these three categories\, and give suggestions for resources to develop a best approach. SUMMARY:From Underground to On the Grid
DESCRIPTION:Join Adrian Shelley\, Texas Office Director for Public Citizen\, as he delves into energy\, from underground to on the grid.  Texas has been an energy state for more than a century. But as the global energy market shifts away from fossil fuels and toward clean sources such as wind\, solar\, and battery storage\, Texas risks being left behind. At the start of the 21st century\, Texas pursued an all-of-the-above energy strategy that saw the largest investment in wind energy in history. More recently\, the fossil fuel industry has changed its tactics as it responds to the existential threat of climate change. Today we see political decision making that favors the entrenched business interests of the fossil fuel industry over average Texans. This explains why Texas lawmakers are not pursing common sense solutions to fixing Texas’ ailing electricity grid. These solutions include demand-side strategies such as energy efficiency and demand response\, which can stabilize our grid\, save consumers money\, and make homes more resilient to temperature extremes. Time for Q&A with the speaker will be provided. Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/from-underground-to-on-the-grid-tickets-737952103607. SUMMARY:Interconnections with Soil\, Human Health and the Environment
DESCRIPTION:Soil is essential to all life and is important to human health in many ways. It can filter water\, provide nutrients and food\, store carbon\, and supply us with antibiotics to fight diseases. However\, soils are often mistreated by industrial agriculture and contaminated by environmental pollutants like oil spills which can directly affect human and environmental health. Sara Denison\, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rice University\, will discuss how soil contamination\, human health and the environment are all connected and ways contaminated soils can be cleaned up and restored. In addition\, she will discuss the health burden associated with exposure to particular contaminants found in soils around Houston and technology that she is researching that will help remove these contaminants from soil. Time for Q&A with the speaker will be provided. SUMMARY:Interconnections with the Environment: Ecosystem Services & Us
DESCRIPTION:Join Professor Kerri Crawford of the University of Houston to consider more deeply the interconnections between humans and our environment\, through the lens of ecosystem services. As biodiversity is lost through anthropogenic changes\, it is becoming increasingly clear how much we rely on the natural world. Nature provides us with many services\, including water purification\, climate regulation\, and pollination. However\, what happens to these services when we start losing biodiversity? Can we restore ecosystem services once they are damaged? This presentation will highlight how we benefit from nature\, new research on how humans are influencing ecosystem services\, and paths forward to restore nature and the benefits it provides.  Time for interactive Q&A with the speaker will be provided.
