SUMMARY:Finding Water and Hope
DESCRIPTION:Finding hope in adapting to climate change can start by focusing on water.  Join Jen Powis\, Managing Attorney for the Gulf Regional Office of Earthjustice\, for a high level overview of how the law protects or sometimes sacrifices drinking water for industrial development and how communities can work together to protect the elixir of life. \n\n\n\nThe talk will also touch briefly on environmental justice principles of community led work with the reference frame around water harkening back to Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream Speech.”  Dr. King famously invoked the Old Testament scripture Amos 5:24 when he adapted the verse to declare: “No\, no\, we are not satisfied\, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters\, and righteousness like a mighty stream.” \n\n\n\nTime for interactive discussion with the speaker will be provided. \n\n\n\nPlease register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1992953945901. \n\n\n\nThis virtual event will use the WebEx platform. Registrants will receive a separate e-mail with WebEx connection details.  All registrants will get a link to the recording of this talk. \n\n\n\nContact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com with any questions.

SUMMARY:Learning the Language of Creation book discussion group
DESCRIPTION:While there are many books on ecological restoration and its benefits to humanity\, this book focuses on human healing as a prerequisite to bringing about ecological healing.  Written by a Catholic sister who is also a professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Notre Dame\, she intends the book for a broad audience – “for scientists and engineers … for non-scientists and citizens…for Catholics and non-Catholics…” and for all concerned with how we as human persons can come together to care for our common home. She opens the book with a quote from Pope Francis: “If we learn how to listen\, we can hear in the voice of creation a kind of dissonance.  On the one hand\, we can hear a sweet song in praise of our beloved creator\, on the other\, an anguished plea\, lamenting our mistreatment of this our common home”.  She closes her prologue with this invitation: “What can be done to bring about harmony so that the “sweet song” of creation can be heard again?  This book now journeys toward creative responses to that question.” \n\n\n\nJoin a virtual discussion of this thought-provoking and inspirational book each week during the Season of Creation (observed by Christians from Sept. 1 through Oct. 4). If you can’t attend every week\, attend as you are able. Purchase the book at https://litpress.org/. \n\n\n\nRegister for Learning the Language of Creation book discussion group on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1994572085801.  Contact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com for more information.

SUMMARY:Heat Stress Prevention: Medical Community Engagement with Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Brett Perkison as he presents the latest technologies and methods used to monitor workers for heat stress. He will also discuss how current medical diagnostic coding often underdiagnoses patients with heat-related illnesses and how emerging electronic health record features may improve our ability to measure the health impacts of extreme heat. These advances may also enhance recognition\, treatment\, and reimbursement for heat-related conditions\, helping the medical community better address the health effects of climate change. Time for interactive discussion with the speaker will be provided. \n\n\n\nPlease register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1996471543129.
