SUMMARY:Is There an Association Between Air Pollution and COVID-19 Mortality?
DESCRIPTION:The air quality in Harris County is influenced by multiple sources of pollution\, including extensive road traffic\, concrete batch plants\, proximity to the largest petrochemical industrial complex in the United States\, and port activities in the Houston Ship Channel. It is also important to note that environmental risks are not always uniformly distributed in urban areas like Houston\, Harris County\, and individuals classified with low socioeconomic status (SES) can become overburdened by environmental exposures. One pollutant of interest is particulate matter\, specifically particulate matter of size 2.5 micrometers in diameter (PM2.5). PM2.5 is of particular interest because these fine particles pose the greatest risk to human health due to their small size and ability to reach multiple organs. There are long-term and short-term impacts of PM2.5 pollution on the human respiratory and cardiovascular organ systems. These short and long-term impacts may have contributed to poor outcomes following SARS-CoV-2 infection (COVID-19). The COVID-19 Pandemic has impacted us all. An important public health objective is to identify key modifiable environmental factors that may contribute to the severity of the health outcomes related to this disease. Join Rachel White\, MPH\, PhD (c)\, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston\, as she takes a deep dive into this topic and discusses how pollution may impact our understanding of respiratory illnesses such as COVID-19.  Time for interactive discussion with the speaker will be provided.  Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/is-there-an-association-between-air-pollution-and-covid-19-mortality-tickets-330848455637. SUMMARY:How Long Will Our Aquifers Last?
DESCRIPTION:Groundwater is\, as famously quoted by the Texas Supreme Court in 1904\, “secret\, occult\, and concealed.” Sometimes referred to as “hidden water\,” it is out of sight and\, therefore\, unfortunately\, out of mind. However\, groundwater comprises 98.7 percent of all the fresh\, unfrozen water on Earth. About 40 percent of all surface-water flows in the United States are sourced from innumerable seeps and springs that discharge groundwater into streams and rivers. Groundwater supports 26 percent of the human use of water with 70 percent of it watering crops. As drier areas become drier and droughts increase everywhere\, groundwater is expected to make up the difference. Unfortunately\, much of the groundwater used across the planet is produced unsustainably. This unsustainable use affects flows to springs\, streams\, rivers\, wetlands\, and estuaries that support ecologies as well as human needs. In some cases\, such as in the Houston area\, groundwater production has caused the land to sink\, increasing flooding. In this presentation\, Professor Mace will present what he has learned about groundwater sustainability through a report he published late last year title “Five Gallons in a Ten-Gallon Hat: Groundwater Sustainability in Texas” and in a forthcoming book titled “Groundwater Sustainability: Its Birth\, Development\, and Application.” Listeners will have a better understanding of what groundwater sustainability is\, how Texas and the greater Houston area is doing with sustainable groundwater management\, and what people can do to achieve groundwater sustainability. Time for interactive discussion with the speaker will be provided.  Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/how-long-will-our-aquifers-last-tickets-314757356727. SUMMARY:Collective Visioning for Our Region’s Water
DESCRIPTION:In a generation\, much of the U.S. will resemble the lower Galveston Bay Watershed\, a 10-county region surrounding Houston which Bayou City Waterkeeper (BCWK) serves. Home to the most diverse population\, and also one of the most ecologically diverse major urban areas\, our waterways — consisting of 2\,500 miles of bayous\, as well as creeks\, coastlines\, and the ocean — support immense biodiversity. Our region has lived through unprecedented storm surges and widespread flooding from hurricanes and heavy rain storms over the last two decades. Amplifying the worst effects of these storms are the region’s long-time underinvestment in forward-thinking flood prevention\, lax attitudes towards land use regulation\, and historic redlining practices which have driven over-development of ecologically sensitive wetland areas and the outer-lying parts of our city. Ayanna Jolivet Mccloud\, Executive Director of BCWK\, will explore the critical role that collective visioning\, ecological imagination and storytelling play in connecting to and advocating for our region’s waterways and our community. Beyond the built environment\, how can we use imagination as a tool to explore new ways to restore prairies and wetlands\, which hold rainfall and prevent flooding? How can we use imagination as a tool for new approaches towards water infrastructure that center ecological impacts and environmental justice. Established in 2001\, Bayou City Waterkeeper is a Houston-based organization working at the confluence of conservation and environmental justice toward cleaner water\, wetlands and healthy ecosystems\, and just\, resilient communities. Time for interactive discussion with the speaker will be provided.  Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/collective-visioning-for-our-regions-water-tickets-288968451417. SUMMARY:Forest Bathing & Earth Examen
DESCRIPTION:Experience forest bathing\, led by a certified guide\, followed by practice of the Christian spiritual discipline of the Earth Examen.  Forest bathing\, a practice that originated in Japan\, involves taking in\, in all of one’s senses\, the forest atmosphere. Not simply a walk in the woods\, it is the conscious and contemplative practice of being immersed in the sights\, sounds and smells of the forest.  Forest bathing has been shown to reduce stress\, improve mood and focus\, enhance creativity\, and lead to an increased sense of calm and altruistic behavior\, in addition to other benefits such as boosting the immune system and lowering blood pressure.  As Christians\, we understand that God is present in God’s creation\, and after our guided forest bath\, we’ll spend some time considering the Earth Examen as we reflect both on our time spent forest bathing and on our relationship with all creation.  This activity is for a small group and space is limited.  Please register at www.eventbrite.com at:  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/forest-bathing-earth-examen-tickets-291848535827. SUMMARY:Eight Crucial Years for Our Civilization
DESCRIPTION:Most people don’t realize quite how pivotal the next eight years are for the future of our climate\, our planet\, and our civilization. Join Phoebe Barnard\, lead author of the global climate action blueprint\, “World Scientists’ Warnings Into Action: Local to Global\,” with 15 top global scientists\, economists and governance specialists\, as she outlines the actions that humanity needs to take to avert our complex planetary crises by 2026\, 2030 and 2050 at six scales\, from the household and community levels to cities\, states\, nations and the UN.  What are the most important things which we can\, and must\, all do as individuals\, as communities\, in cities? These include concrete actions for energy conservation and decarbonization; for reduction of atmospheric pollutants; for nature conservation and restoration; for food systems reform\, dietary change and soil conservation; for smaller families and stabilizing and slowly reducing population; and for reform of our consumerist economy.  A summary of the paper is given in an article in The Conversation\, and the paper is open for cosignature by anyone with a degree in any kind of science at Scientists’ Warning Europe. Time for interactive discussion with the speaker will be provided.  Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/eight-crucial-years-for-our-civilization-tickets-261427736397. SUMMARY:Earth Church
DESCRIPTION:Join Jim Blackburn\, Professor in the Practice in Environmental Law at Rice University\, who will discuss his new book\, Earth Church\, which he co-authored with artist Isabelle Scurry Chapman. Earth Church is a book about Earth-based spirituality\, a subject that will become much more prominent in a future defined by a changing climate and the creation of a new economic system that is circular rather than linear. At the center of Earth-based spirituality is the Earth itself\, that wonderful planet without which we would not be.  Blackburn will weave a narrative around the poetry and art of Earth-based spirituality. Time for interactive discussion with the speaker will be provided.  Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/earth-church-tickets-235539965377. SUMMARY:The Grammar of Creation: What is Nature Speaking to Us? (And Are We Listening?)
DESCRIPTION:Join Sr. Damien Marie Savino\, Dean of Science & Sustainability at Aquinas College and a Franciscan Sister of the Eucharist with a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering\, as she reflects on the ancient notion of the “grammar of creation” in light of contemporary ecological challenges. In many ways today\, creation is “groaning\, waiting to be made known” (Romans 8)\, waiting for humans to hear its cry. Sister Damien Marie will share her “reading” of some key messages from the grammar of creation and how they can help us better understand the nature of Planet Earth\, in order to heal its wounds. SUMMARY:All Creation Waits Weekly Book Discussion Group for Advent
DESCRIPTION:Avoid the consumer hype of the “holiday season” with daily readings of intimate\, beautifully-written portraits of wild animals and their adaptations to the cold and dark of winter.  The author sees in these creatures lessons for adapting to the “winters” in our own lives.  The book\, although intended as a devotional for the Christian season of Advent\, is very unusual in that the stories contain no overtly religious content\, making it suitable for people of all faiths\, or no faith at all. So\, Christians\, environmentalists\, animal lovers & others will be captivated and inspired by these stories.  And\, the stories can be read with children & enjoyed by the entire family.  Join a weekly book discussion group on Wednesdays\, online\, to reflect together on All Creation Waits.  Register for the weekly discussion on www.eventbrite.com at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/all-creation-waits-book-discussion-group-for-advent-tickets-192586951757. SUMMARY:A Climate Action Plan for Faith Communities & People of Faith
DESCRIPTION:Join Lisa Brenskelle\, Houston Climate Communication Coordinator for the Texas chapter of Interfaith Power & Light\, for a discussion on developing a Climate Action Plan for your faith community and for yourself. The City of Houston has a Climate Action Plan\, but how do you translate that to your faith community\, or to your household?  Clearly\, a city and a faith community or an individual household are very different.  However\, certain fundamental principles apply to all cases. This talk will highlight those principles\, as well tools available and steps to take in developing a climate action plan for both houses of worship & individuals.  Time for interactive Q&A with the speaker will be provided.  Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/a-climate-action-plan-for-faith-communities-people-of-faith-tickets-183953689437. SUMMARY:Houston’s Transition to a Low Carbon Future
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Bruce Race\, FAIA\, FAICP\, Professor of Architecture at the University of Houston\, as he considers how Houston could transition to a low carbon future.  Texas is the historic global epicenter for the carbon economy. Oil and gas represent over one third of the state economy. Texas’ $1.9 trillion GDP\, if a country\, would make us the 9th largest in the world. We have over 50 Fortune 500 companies\, including ExxonMobil (2nd) and ConocoPhillips (4th). Is Houston the next Detroit\, or can we diversify our way to continued prosperity in a low-carbon economy? Dr. Bruce Race\, FAIA\, FAICP from the University of Houston will share his research on how energy conservation and shift to renewables will reshape Houston’s economy\, development patterns\, and mobility systems. Time will be provided for discussion with the audience after his talk.  Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com. Contact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com with any questions. \n

SUMMARY:A Resilient Future for All Rests on Prioritizing the Most Vulnerable
DESCRIPTION:Join Kristen Schlemmer\, Legal Director at Bayou City Waterkeeper\, as she considers how disasters\, while affecting large portions of the Houston population\, impact the vulnerable more severely and why building resilience is critical.  Hurricane Harvey and Winter Storm Uri showed us that disasters increasingly affect large portions of our region’s population. While many of us are able to recover from these storms in a matter of weeks\, decades of underinvestment in our water systems and flood protection have left low-income communities especially vulnerable to the long-term effects of a single disaster. As we work toward a resilient future for all\, we must focus on those most affected by historic neglect\, as well as disaster over the long-term. If we emphasize justice for the most vulnerable among us\, we will secure resilience for all.  With science\, law\, and policy\, Bayou City Waterkeeper works with local communities to protect and restore natural systems\, achieve equitable policy solutions\, and systematically advance change to benefit all who live within the Lower Galveston Bay watershed encompassing the greater Houston area. Time will be provided for discussion with the audience after Kristen’s talk.  Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com. SUMMARY:A Healthy Planet is a Prerequisite for Healthy People
DESCRIPTION:Join Hyun-Min Hwang\, Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental & Interdisciplinary Sciences at Texas Southern University\, as he discusses the links between people’s health\, and the health of our planet. Our planet consists of four major components: lithosphere (land)\, hydrosphere (water)\, biosphere (living things)\, and atmosphere (air). A healthy planet is a prerequisite for healthy people. Every day we depend on the health of the air we breathe\, the water we drink\, the foods we eat\, and the land on which we build houses to keep us alive and healthy. But the health of the planet has been degraded by humans. Pollutants in air\, soil\, water\, and food threaten human health. Humans have also created many global environmental problems such as ozone depletion and climate change. This presentation will cover how humans have polluted our planet and how a polluted environment affects human health. Time will be provided for discussion with the audience after Professor Hwang’s talk.  Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com. SUMMARY:Externalities in Action: Air Pollution\, Public Health\, and Environmental Justice in Houston
DESCRIPTION:Join Paige Powell\, Development Director at Air Alliance Houston\, as she discusses the impacts of air pollution on physical health\, quality of life\, and economic prosperity. In her talk\, Paige will consider: \n\nWhat is the “right” amount of air pollution for a healthy and prosperous society?\nWhat are the true costs of doing business measured by the Triple Bottom Line?\nWhat are the socioeconomic implications of racial inequity and environmental injustice?\nHow can the Houston economy continue to thrive through the energy transition and beyond?\n\nPaige will provide information on Houston’s air pollution\, its related health impacts\, and those disproportionately impacted to provide thought-provoking responses to these questions. \nWhile she will address this topic from a Houston perspective\, these questions are relevant for everyone\, everywhere. Time will be provided for discussion with the audience after Paige’s talk.  Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com. Contact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com with any questions.

SUMMARY:Thank You for Biting: Can non-lethal predation help prey?
DESCRIPTION:Christ the King Evangelical Lutheran Church invites you to a monthly environmental education web meeting series whose theme in 2020 is the wonders of nature. \nIn September\, join Professor Adrienne Correa of Rice University to learn about coral reefs & their relationship with their predators. Coral reefs are biodiverse ecosystems that are constructed by partnerships between coral animals and their resident microorganisms (i.e.\, the coral microbiome). Healthy reefs remain covered by corals because consumers\, such as some fish and urchins\, eat algae and other organisms that compete with corals for space. However\, some reef-associated consumers prey on corals – they take bites from coral colonies without killing them. This non-lethal predation on corals has mainly been studied in terms of how it weakens reef frameworks\, creating spaces for other reef dwellers to hide. Professor Correa’s group is investigating a surprising indirect benefit that corals receive from being preyed upon: a supply of microorganisms for their microbiome. Join Professor Correa to learn more\, including how this predator-prey interaction might ultimately be leveraged to help stressed or sick corals! Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com. SUMMARY:The Wonders of Coastal Wetlands
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, wetlands were considered useless land\, and we filled them in to make farmland and housing. Today\, we realize that wetlands provide numerous valuable services to humanity\, and we seek to protect and restore them. Coastal wetlands are threatened by a number of factors\, but can be remarkably resilient to moderate rates of sea level rise. This talk will review some of the benefits we derive from coastal wetlands\, discuss the threats facing them\, and explain why we have reason to expect that wetlands will survive despite ongoing global change. Join this conversation with Professor Steven Pennings of the University of Houston as we wonder at coastal wetlands! Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com. SUMMARY:The Wonders of the Deep Sea
DESCRIPTION:Approximately two thirds of the earth’s surface is covered by oceans with an average depth of about 2.65 miles. Below 0.62 miles\, the water is completely dark\, temperatures plummet to 39 °F\, and the pressure is about 40 times the pressure of earth’s atmosphere. Nonetheless\, many creatures can live in this extreme place having no light. Deep sea explorations have found shrimp\, fish\, coral\, tube worms\, mussels\, starfish\, and many other creatures even below 2 miles. About 95% of the ocean remains unexplored\, and marine scientists continuously find new species in this unusual place. In addition to creatures\, huge quantities of methane gas hydrates and billions of tons of manganese nodules are found in deep ocean floors (2-4 miles deep). Manganese nodules grow only 10-100 millimeters per million years. Gas hydrates may contain roughly twice the carbon contained in all reserves of coal\, oil\, and conventional natural gas combined. Join Professor Hyun-Min Hwang of Texas Southern University to be awestruck by these\, and other\, wonders of the deep sea.
