DESCRIPTION:Join VoteSimple\, Indivisible Houston\, Swing TX Left\, Emgage\, Gulf Coast ADAPT\, and more for a rally this Saturday\, April 17th\, 10 AM CT at the Greater Houston Partnership building located at 701 Avenida De Las Americas\, Houston\, TX 77010 as we continue to raise awareness around voter suppression.\nAll activities will follow social distancing and COVID protocols. We will have a variety of PPE available for participants.\nPurpose:\nWe call on the Greater Houston Partnership and Houston’s business community to publicly oppose Senate Bill 7 and House Bill 6. We oppose these bills because we believe that in America’s most diverse city\, every American – regardless of skin color – should have a voice in our democracy and that voting should be safe and accessible to all voters.\nTexas has had a long\, abhorrent history of racial discrimination. From poll taxes to whites-only primaries\, our state legislators have long used their power to restrict the right to vote. SB7 and HB6 are no different.\nIf passed\, SB7 and HB6 would:\n1. Increase wait times for Black and Brown people to vote by eliminating polling locations in their neighborhoods\n2. Allow poll watchers to videotape and harass voters while they are voting\n3. End 24-hour voting\n4. Ban drive-thru voting\n5. Criminalize small mistakes for people assisting people to register to vote\n6. Make it harder to vote by mail\n7. Burden people with disabilities by imposing criminal penalties on caregivers who make innocent mistakes\nNow is the time for businesses to speak out. It is possible that both bills will pass the Legislature within the next 2-3 weeks.
