SUMMARY:Plastic Free EcoChallenge
DESCRIPTION:Plastic pollution now contaminates the deepest trenches in the ocean\, the highest mountain peaks\, and even the air we breathe. Microplastics have been found in human blood\, lungs\, breast milk and placentas.  Plastic has entered the food chain\, killing wildlife\, and causing the average person to eat tens of thousands of microplastic particles every year. To learn more about this issue & take action to affect change\, join one of the two teams listed below for the Plastic Free EcoChallenge (or create your own team\, or join as an individual)!  You select the challenges you’d like to accomplish during the month and when/how you do them.  For more information\, see this link: https://plasticfree.ecochallenge.org/. SUMMARY:Interfaith Justice Advocacy Workshop
DESCRIPTION:June 2023 is the perfect time to refresh your advocacy knowledge and set goals for engaging your faith community around issues that impact the planet and its peoples. Why is it such a perfect time? The Texas legislative session just ended\, and in September all eyes will turn toward the 2024 elections. Faith communities typically don’t want to be seen as “political\,” but\, as we’ll cover in this workshop\, faith communities can—and should—provide important education and leadership roles in nonpartisan civic engagement. Join Bee Moorhead\, executive director of Texas Impact\, an interfaith justice advocacy organization\, and her colleagues\, to talk about what that looks like “in real life\,” and do a deep dive into Texas Impact’s specific Houston-area resources and projects.  Register for this event on www.eventbrite.com at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/interfaith-justice-advocacy-workshop-tickets-627649485507. SUMMARY:The Path of Hope: A Study on Climate Action for Faith Communities
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join an online discussion series built around 15-minute videos featuring interviews with US faith leaders\, representatives of climate-impacted communities from the global South\, and presentations by UN officials and other experts. The videos walk viewers through four key climate policy issues that intersect with universal faith concerns for vulnerable and marginalized people. The series focuses on how climate change is impacting the core ministries of faith communities around the world\, how those impacts will increase in the future\, and why these impacts create an imperative for people of faith to advocate for strong US climate action.  A discussion guide is included that asks participants to think deeply about how their own local faith community’s direct service programs intersect with climate impacts\, and how knowledge and experiences gained through these programs might help to inform climate policy. The study’s Action Center provides practical\, step-by-step instructions for advocacy activities\, as well as recommended policy asks for local\, state\, and national leaders.  Join us! Please register on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-path-of-hope-a-study-on-climate-action-for-faith-communities-tickets-570682395407. SUMMARY:Federal Incentives for Energy Efficiency and Renewables: Why They Matter to People of Faith
DESCRIPTION:We now have a wide window of opportunity to make real\, lasting changes for clean energy and reducing carbon pollution. The Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law are investing billions of dollars to build clean energy sources\, electrify school buses\, cap orphaned wells\, and much\, much more.  In addition\, there are many incentives for households\, and houses of worship\, to invest in energy efficiency improvements and renewable energy.  People of faith therefore play a vital role in determining how federal funds are spent and the quality of the investments made. Lisa Brenskelle\, Houston Climate Communication Coordinator for Texas Interfaith Power & Light and Rebecca McIlwain\, Community Outreach Coordinator with Texas Climate Jobs Project\, will give an overview of the available federal grants/incentives and talk about what you can do to ensure the money is invested in a way that makes the most impact and promotes justice. Time for interactive Q&A with the speakers will be provided.  Please register for this event on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/federal-incentives-for-energy-efficiency-and-renewables-tickets-608800277017.  Texas Climate Jobs Project (TCJP) is a nonprofit organization that supports clean energy that is inclusive to everyone concerned and creates decent work opportunities that leave no one behind. Texas Interfaith Power & Light is the Texas chapter of Interfaith Power & Light\, a national nonprofit whose mission is to inspire and mobilize people of faith and conscience to take bold and just action on climate change.  Contact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com with any questions.

SUMMARY:Faithful Resilience: A Study on Climate Resilience for Faith Communities
DESCRIPTION:Faithful Resilience is a six-part weekly study on climate resilience for faith communities. The climate crisis has arrived. Faith communities must not only react\, but also prepare. Over the last decade\, hurricanes have intensified\, wildfires have burnt stronger\, and heat waves have baked our cities. These events can only be expected to get worse in the next decades. Most of our faith communities are not ready for these climate-driven disasters. Yet\, the communities who will be most threatened by climate change also have an opportunity to play a pivotal role in building resilience in their towns and cities. Whether a faith community has a large facility\, land\, social capital\, or something else\, those assets can be channeled into building climate resilience in preparation for the coming physical and spiritual storms of the climate crisis. Join us for this six-week exploration and consider how your faith community can become a force for climate resilience. SUMMARY:Sustainable Celebrations
DESCRIPTION:Whether celebrating in your home or your house of worship\, people of all faith/spiritual traditions would like their occasions to be sustainable.  Sustainability is frequently defined as fulfilling the needs of current generations without compromising the needs of future generations.  This is a simple definition\, but putting it into practice for holidays and holy days may require some thought and planning.  Lisa Brenskelle will draw from her decades of work in earthkeeping ministry in both Christian and interfaith settings to explain the key aspects to consider to make your celebration sustainable.  Time for interactive discussion with the speaker will be provided.  Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/sustainable-celebrations-tickets-430614338077. SUMMARY:Faithful Voter Weekly Online Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:As people of faith and conscience\, we believe elections are a referendum on the values that will shape our future. How can we renew our fragile democracy? How do we honor the human dignity of every person? Will we protect our Sacred Earth and our children’s future? What policies will prioritize the common good and confront future crises that remind us of our interdependence? Many of the defining moral issues of our time are on the ballot: faltering democratic institutions\, too much wealth in the hands of a few\, damage to the climate\, cruel immigration policies that tear families apart\, mass incarceration that devastates communities of color\, senseless gun violence\, and threats to global public health and security. These challenges are daunting. To move forward in a spirit of hope\, and to resist despair and cynicism\, join this weekly discussion group where we’ll navigate the urgent moral questions raised by the coming election\, allowing you to discern your path forward. Can’t make it every week? Join as you are able\, or for those topics most of interest to you. The topic for each week’s discussion is given below. All attendees receive an electronic copy of the Faithful Voter Reflection Guide from Interfaith Power & Light\, plus supplemental materials provided by the facilitator. SUMMARY:Heat in Houston: Justice Implications\, Solutions\, & How People of Faith Can Engage
DESCRIPTION:Heat is the greatest weather-related disaster in the U.S.\, killing more people than any other kind of natural disaster.  And\, Texas is one of three states with the highest heat-related deaths. A study found that the Houston area averaged 18 dangerously hot summer days per year from 1975 to 2010. Without any action to combat urban heat\, Houston’s annual number of days hit by dangerous summer heat could rise to 80 by 2046. So\, Houston’s urban heat issues are already serious and are forecasted to get much worse with the Climate Crisis. Urban heat negatively affects human and biodiversity health throughout the region\, exacts a financial toll\, leads to higher ozone levels\, and reduces quality of life.  Heat mapping in Houston has shown that high heat is more concentrated in underinvested communities and/or Communities of Color\, thereby widening historic inequalities. Fortunately\, there are solutions that can be brought to bear to reduce urban heat.  Join Jaime Gonzalez of The Nature Conservancy\, who led heat mapping efforts in Houston\, for a discussion on the findings\, their justice implications\, solutions\, and how houses of worship/people of faith can engage.  Learn more/register on www.eventbrite.com. SUMMARY:The Path of Hope: A Study on Climate Action for Faith Communities
DESCRIPTION:  \nYou are invited to join an online discussion series on Thursdays built around 15-minute videos featuring interviews with US faith leaders\, representatives of climate-impacted communities from the global South\, and presentations by UN officials and other experts. Join us!
Join us for a six-week exploration on Thursday evenings of how your house of worship/faith community can become a force for climate resilience for your community.
