SUMMARY:Meditative Moment for Families
DESCRIPTION:Bring the family to the Rothko Chapel for a mindfulness meditation using animal themed yoga poses\, breathing exercises\, and intention setting through drawing. As we transition from spring to summer\, take a moment to recalibrate emotions\, thoughts\, and actions through a nurturing and fun approach. In developing critical tools for overall well-being and mental health\, the class will end with a child centered meditation to reduce feelings of anxiety or negative self-talk\, instead refocusing on gratitude. \n\n\n\nAlign Mind has worked with various elementary schools in the Houston area and teaches mindfulness workshops at various organizations including The Children’s Museum\, Rice University\, UT Health\, and others.

A community discussion will follow with Texas-based youth and grassroots activists including Chanté Davis (Sunrise Houston) and Armon Alex (Gulf of Mexico Youth Climate Summit) about the links between environmental and climate justice and community health\, moderated by Andre Segura\, VP of Litigation at Earthjustice. Reflection time will be facilitated by Tiffany Jin\, Co-Director of Houston Climate Justice Museum. \nSpecial thanks to Hershey Foundation for underwriting support

SUMMARY:Rothko Chapel's MLK Birthday Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Coinciding with the Chapel’s annual observance of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.’s birthday on January 15\, 2022\, the program opens with a performance of and discussion about music central to the US Civil Rights Movement. The Community Music Center of Houston Scott Joplin Chamber Orchestra conducted by Dr. Anne Lundy will share a selection of music central to Dr. King’s transformative leadership and Black Americans’ historic and contemporary protests for equity. Dr. Shana L. Redmond\, scholar of music\, race and politics\, will discuss the broader history surrounding the role of music in activism in the U.S.\, the importance of music in Rev. King’s life\, and the strategic use of music within the Civil Rights Movement.\n\nThe Rothko Chapel started the annual MLK Birthday Celebration in 1979 to connect the contemporary implications of Dr. King’s legacy to the ongoing struggle for civil and human rights\, captured by artist Barnett Newman’s Broken Obelisk. This sculpture\, located on the plaza adjacent to the Chapel\, is dedicated to Dr. King.

SUMMARY:American Indian Worldview and the Concept of Rights
DESCRIPTION:Join the Rothko Chapel for a dialogue between Tink Tinker and Dina Gilio-Whitaker\, moderated by Suzanne Benally\, exploring the concept of rights for the American Indian people. Juxtaposed to western frameworks that focus on individual rights\, for American Indians the idea of rights has often been used against the collective interests of tribal nations because the philosophical foundations at the core of Indigenous and western worldviews are dramatically different. The conversation will include these themes and provide an opportunity for the virtual audience to ask questions.  \nThe program is free with a suggested contributions $5-20.  For more info and to register visit www.rothkochapel.org.

He also conducts dream groups\, in which participants help interpret one another’s dreams in the tradition of Jung. \n“Dr. Ruhl’s wealth of knowledge\, experience and perspective are vast\,” Michelle Ashton\, public programs director for the Rothko Chapel\, said. “We hope the community will join us for this great opportunity to learn about meditation and spend time at the Chapel.” \nThe Twelve Moments series is co-sponsored by Ligmincha Texas Institute\, the Jung Center of Houston and M.
