SUMMARY:Lessons from a Storm: Public Ed and Hurricane Harvey
DESCRIPTION:After seeing their cities flooded and homes destroyed in Hurricane Harvey\, Texas teachers and students spent the rest of the academic year struggling to get back to baseline\, working through the negative academic and mental health effects of one of the worst natural disasters in the state’s history. How are teachers and students focusing on classroom demands while continuing to pick up the pieces of their lives? \nJoin The Texas Tribune in person or on our livestream for a conversation about the impact Hurricane Harvey had on public education in Houston and across Texas moderated by the Tribune’s public education reporter Aliyya Swaby. \nOur panelists include: \n– Rhonda Howard\, social worker at Houston ISD’s T.H. Rogers School\n– Jennifer Mann\, principal at Wharton ISD’s Wharton Elementary School\n– Anh-Minh Nguyen\, graduating senior at Alief ISD’s Alief Early College High School\n– Tiffany Robinson\, secondary science instructional specialist at Alief ISD’s Elsik Ninth Grade Center \nThe event is free\, open to the public and includes a light lunch. \nThis event is supported by CenterPoint Energy\, the Texas Association of School Business Officials\, Texas State Technical College and Southwest Airlines\, the official airline of Texas Tribune Events\, and hosted by Houston Community College.
