SUMMARY:The Resilient Garden: Food Security in the Age of a Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:We hope you’ll join Transition Houston as we explore the resilient garden and how to enhance food security in the age of this pandemic.\nThis will be Transition Houston’s first meeting by video conference using Zoom on August 4th @ 6pm!   \nIn order to join our meeting\, simply click this link in your web browser. We recommend testing your audio / video in advance of our meeting time. \nYou may also dial in using your phone. \nMeeting ID: 996 3115 5713Passcode: 834573One tap mobile+13462487799\,\,99631155713# US (Houston)+16699006833\,\,99631155713# US (San Jose) \nHouston is a very fortunate place!\nWe have diversity of population\, local farms\, Houston is a major port and transportation hub and we have abundance\, even in this once in a lifetime pandemic. \nBut the food supply is dangerously fragile. We depend on imports from around the world\, high carbon transportation systems to get our food to our grocery store\, high labor requirements for picking\, processing etc. And factory farms have put many small farmers out of business. \nIn the late 90’s there was a local food movement growing on the two coasts and it made its way here to the Gulf Coast. There were local advocates and leaders who led this movement forward and created a local food movement. Now local farms grow more food every year responding to restaurant chefs\, farmers’ markets\, local CSA’a and local grocery stores sell more local produce. \nAs the pandemic strips away our veneer of abundant\, cheap and convenient food\, we see that buying local and supporting local is the only answer in times of this economic and health panic. Shopping at the farmers’ markets and growing one’s own food is increasingly popular. \nAbout Our Speakers\nKevin Topek\, Permaculture Garden DesignerOwner of a sustainable landscaping and planning company\, Kevin has practiced Permaculture design for over 30 year and is a native of Houston. His website is permaculturedesign.net. \nTyler Horne\, Urban Harvest Farmers’ Market ManagerTyler has been Market Manager for 12 years with the main Urban Harvest Farmers’ Market near River Oaks. In his spare time he enjoys fishing and camping. \nLibby Kennedy\, Urban Harvest\, Director of Strategic ProjectsLibby has been with Urban Harvest for 6 years and is instrumental in planning the annual Fruit Tree Sale and the expansion of the Farmers’ Markets.

SUMMARY:Transition Houston Meeting: Combat Climate Change with Extinction Rebellion!
DESCRIPTION:We hope you’ll join Transition Houston for our first meeting of 2020 as we Combat Climate Change with Extinction Rebellion!\nSocializing starts at 6:30pm and the meeting begins at 7:00pm at the Haven’s Center\, 1827 W Alabama St\, Houston\, TX 77098. \nTHE TRUTH\nWe are facing an unprecedented global emergency. Life on Earth is in crisis: scientists agree we have entered a period of abrupt climate breakdown\, and we are in the midst of a mass extinction of our own making. \nACT NOW\nWe are unprepared for the danger our future holds. We face floods\, wildfires\, extreme weather\, crop failure\, mass displacement and the breakdown of society. The time for denial is over. It is time to act. \nConventional approaches of voting\, lobbying\, petitions and protest have failed because powerful political and economic interests prevent change. Our strategy is therefore one of non-violent\, disruptive civil disobedience – a rebellion. \nHistorical evidence shows that we need the involvement of 3.5% of the population to succeed – in the UK that’s about 2 million people. \nJOIN US\nWe need you – whoever you are\, however much time you have – to help build a powerful movement. Our vision of change involves mass participation. Together we’re unstoppable. \n\nAbout Our Speaker\nBrent Sullivan has lived his life in Houston\, first becoming active on environmental causes via Occupy and the Tar Sands Blockade actions against the Keystone pipeline in the woods of Nacodoches. \nMore recently\, he served on the planning committee for the People’s Climate March and started “Tuesdays at Cornyn’s” which has met with his staffers and rallied on the sidewalk every Tuesday for over 150 weeks. \nIn September\, along with 18 others\, Brent started forming Extinction Rebellion Houston\, a group dedicated to driving its 4 demands into public debate and into policy through direct action. “Heading for Extinction–and what to do about it” lays bare the scope and scale of the emergency we face and makes both a moral and practical case for direct action. \nMost of Brent’s family is in the oil business\, so he views Extinction Rebellion’s 4th Demand for a Just Transition as foundational to the entire effort. SUMMARY:Transition Houston Meeting: Houston Landscape of Nature
DESCRIPTION:Houston Landscape of Nature\nWe hope you’ll join us for our upcoming Transition Houston meeting! Socializing starts at 6:30pm and the meeting begins at 7:00pm at the Haven’s Center\, 1827 W Alabama St\, Houston\, TX 77098. \nFrom Big Thicket to Coastal Marshes and from Post Oak Savannah to Coastal Prairie\, we live in one of the most diverse ecological regions. Productive land had brought prosperity to the settlers and laid the foundation for many that followed. \nThe region has much more capacity and to be able to sustain and to provide higher quality of life\, if we must respect and understand our landscape of nature. We can protect habitats and enrich the balance of native vegetation and wildlife\, we can be more resilient in uncertain future of Global Warming and Climate Change and we can be better prepared to provide food security and for better air and water quality. \nAbout Our Speaker\nKeiji Asakura holds over 40 years of experience in urban horticulture\, and practices urban design\, landscape architecture\, and community planning throughout the US and internationally. In his highly regarded practice\, he has master planned and designed beautiful and functional spaces in a variety of settings\, from park and recreation destinations to streetscapes\, educational facilities\, and affordable housing. Keiji believes ecological health of community is based on performance value of landscape and provides a holistic and context-sensitive approach that considers both the aesthetics and function of a plan or design\, allowing for opportunities for enhanced mobility\, connectivity\, community health\, and social interaction\, while respecting the historic and cultural heritage of a site. \nKeiji is a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) Council of Fellows and is the recipient of numerous high honors including the ASLA Distinguished Member Award\, the President’s Call for Service Award\, and the City of Houston Mayor’s Proud Partner Award for Distinguished Service. Keiji was a founding principal of SLA Studio Land Inc. in Houston\, California\, and Tokyo before opening Asakura Robinson in 2004. \nKeiji was born in Japan\, and at age 15\, he left Japan and moved to Southern California before coming to Houston in 1982. He grew up with a very strong sense of this other country where landscape of nature is the basic belief of the society. In the US\, the idea has enabled him to see things from a different perspective to that of many of his American peers.

SUMMARY:Transition Houston Meeting: The Green New Deal
DESCRIPTION:The Green New Deal\nWhat Does it Mean for Me and What Does it Mean for the Future?\nWe hope you’ll join us for our August Transition Houston meeting! Socializing starts at 6:30pm and the meeting begins at 7:00pm at the Haven’s Center\, 1827 W Alabama St\, Houston\, TX 77098. \nThere are moments in history when the world changes. Sometimes we don’t see it up close and in the moment it happens. Some examples in the history of this country are the Civil War\, the emancipation of slaves\, the civil rights movement\, human footprints on the moon……. \nThe New Deal in the 1940’s represented a shift towards social and economic equity for all Americans after the Great Depression. It was amplified in the 1960’s through the Great Society by the Johnson presidency to include marginalized Americans who were excluded from the American Dream. \nNow we have a visionary proposal called the New Green Deal. It is a marker for the framework necessary for legislation and policy to turn back global warming and build a green infrastructure for future generations. The Green New Deal seems to represent the fastest and most logical way to face a future of unspeakable fears. The Green New Deal is where the rubber meets the road. \nFailure is not an option. \nAbout Our Speakers\nJaime Lawson is a native Houstonian\, who works both professionally and within the community to raise awareness about sustainability and climate action. For the past 8 years\, she has worked as a Sustainability Consultant\, primarily in the commercial green building industry. Jaime works with local grassroots organizations to promote equity in sustainability and the need for urgent climate action. She is currently a Community Outreach Coordinator at the Houston Climate Movement\, and serves on the board for PSR Houston\, leading the environmental and climate action committee. \nJen Schmerling is the Deputy Director and head of Environment Texas’s clean energy program\, she focuses on building renewable distributed generation across Texas and advocating for clean air\, clean water\, and open spaces in any way she can. Her experience includes three years working in solar energy\, from building utility-scale solar plants to selling home-sized systems in rural Uganda. Since moving to Houston\, she has worked on studying automotive fleets and analyzing building efficiency. She has a Master’s in Engineering from Stanford University.

SUMMARY:Climate Change Solutions - Nature of the Flood: Understanding Our Dynamic Rivers and Bayous
DESCRIPTION:We hope you’ll join Transition Houston as we discuss Climate Change Solutions! \nBrad Carter will present the Nature of the Flood: Understanding Our Dynamic Rivers and Bayous on Tuesday\, May 7\, 2019 @ 6:30pm.\nSocializing starts at 6:30pm and the meeting begins at 7:00pm at the Haven’s Center\, 1827 W Alabama St\, Houston\, TX 77098. \nWith a new hurricane season upon us\, our meeting will feature a presentation and Q&A by Dr. Brad Carter who will focus on the issue of flooding and understanding how our rivers and bayous play a role in mitigation and flood risk reduction. \nEvery year\, damage from storms – hurricanes\, intense rainstorms\, Nor’easters – makes the news as flood waters wash away structures\, roads\, and topsoil. Floods are natural events but their impacts are often unnecessarily magnified when a lack of understanding\, of the functions of wetlands results in their filling\, draining and development. \nClimate shapes where and how we live and the environment around us and the Houston Climate Movement is leading the way for local action! Texas\, and Houston in particular\, face unique risks and challenges due to the impacts of climate change\, from flooding to heat to droughts and more. \nWe hope you’ll be a part of the journey to address these issues. \nAbout Our Speaker\nDr. Carter received a PhD in Geology from North Carolina State University in 2006.  He has 12 years of professional experience working as a structural geologist in academia and the petroleum industry.  In academia\, Dr. Carter has taught courses in physical geology\, structural geology\, and hydrogeology and mentored student research projects. \nIn the petroleum industry\, his work has focused on deciphering the geologic framework and evolution of sedimentary basins around the world.  Outside of his professional work\, Dr. Carter recently completed Urban Harvest’s Permaculture Design Course and is focused on helping Houstonians become knowledgeable about Earth’s natural processes and how to work with nature to create a more sustainable Houston.

DESCRIPTION:Climate Change: It’s warming\, It’s Us\, We’re Sure\, It’s Bad\, We can fix it!\nWe hope you’ll join us for our first Transition Houston meeting of the New Year! \nOur meeting will feature a presentation and Q&A by Dr. Larry Kremer\, from Citizens Climate Lobby who will present the findings of the Fourth National Climate Assessment report which draws a direct connection between the warming atmosphere and the resulting changes that affect Americans’ lives\, communities\, and livelihoods\, now and in the future. \nClimate shapes where and how we live and the environment around us and the Houston Climate Movement is leading the way for local action! Texas\, and Houston in particular\, face unique risks and challenges due to the impacts of climate change\, from flooding to heat to droughts and more. We hope you’ll be a part of the journey to address these issues. \nSocializing starts at 6:30pm and the meeting begins at 7:00pm at the Haven’s Center\, 1827 W Alabama St\, Houston\, TX 77098. \nAbout Our Speaker\nDr. Kremer obtained his PhD in physical chemistry from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City Utah and his BS in Chemistry from the University of Texas at Austin. He was a visiting fellow at the Nuclear Physics Institute in Amsterdam Netherlands where identified radioactive sulfur containing molecules produced in particle accelerators.  In post doctoral studies at Yale University he studied reaction products of high energy Tritium atoms with hydrocarbons.  His 38 year industrial career involved many aspects of the chemical and energy industries.  As Senior Technology Advisor at Baker Hughes\, he was involved in many areas including handling of hydrocarbons form hydraulic fracturing operations\, processing various feed stocks in refineries including biomass based feed stocks\, carbon capture and storage\, and reducing hazards handling hydrogen sulfide.  He worked on evaluating new technologies\, particularly from small stat up companies. \nFor many years he led the sessions on Desalting at the National AIChE conventions.  He was a Director of the Fuels and Petrochemicals section of AIChE.  He last spoke at an AIChE conference at the Spring Meeting in New Orleans in 2014. Since retiring\, he has been an advisor to companies in energy area and working on sustainability. He has over 50 publications and 19 issued US patents. \nAbout Citizens Climate Lobby\nThe Citizens Climate Lobby (CCL) has been working hard to educate and lobby on behalf of climate change and thanks to hard work and support over many years\, bipartisan legislation is currently before the Congress! The Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act of 2018 introduced in Congress by two Republicans and three Democrats. This historic bipartisan bill would enact carbon fee and dividend into law when passed.

SUMMARY:Join Us for RePurposing Houston! Tuesday\, November 13th @ 6:30pm
DESCRIPTION:ReUse\, ReDuce\, ReCycle\nHave a project in mind\, but just need a few materials to make it happen? There is no such thing as “away”. When we throw anything away\, it must go somewhere! Finally\, recycling and reuse of materials comes to Houston. \nPlease join us for the upcoming Transition Houston meeting as we hear from Caroline Kostak\, the owner of the RePurpose Depot and Keith Koski\, the manager of the City of Houston’s ReUse Warehouse who will present the emerging market for used building materials and household products. Both will share details of their work helping people rebuild their homes and lives after Hurricane Harvey. \nSocializing starts at 6:30pm and the meeting begins at 7:00pm at the Haven’s Center\, 1827 W Alabama St\, Houston\, TX 77098. Map to location \nCaroline Kostak is the owner of RePurpose Depot\, a residential deconstruction and reclaimed building materials company. She is also a LEED AP-Homes and a LEED Green Rater and helps people achieve LEED certifications for their homes. She is the vice chair and Green Schools Committee chair for the US Green Building Building Council Texas Gulf Coast region. Prior to deciding to save the world through Green Building\, Caroline was a Flight Controller at NASA\, helping to build the International Space Station. In her spare time\, she teaches leadership development and yoga. \nKeith Koski has worked in design and construction for most of his adult life. He has striven to minimize waste in his projects as much as possible. Since 2009\, Keith has had the privilege to manage the City of Houston Building Materials Reuse Warehouse\, a component of the Solid Waste Management Department. The Reuse Warehouse accepts building materials from individuals and companies\, diverts them from landfills\, and gives them to non-profit organizations for free. \n\nWe hope to see you there! Bring a friend! \n

SUMMARY:Transition - It's Up to You
DESCRIPTION:Are you feeling curious? Critical? Excited? Daunted?\nThe Transition movement is made up of people like you who are already feeling the benefit of connecting with others to take care of themselves\, their community and the planet. \nWe hope you’ll join us at the next Transition Houston meeting as we explore local issues and how to raise awareness enabling us to make informed decisions in November and beyond. Educating and empowering members within our communities and our elected officials is an integral part of bringing about the changes we need. By continuing to learn\, share and take action with one another\, we can transform our present and our future. \nSocializing starts at 6:30pm and the meeting begins at 7:00pm at the Haven’s Center\, 1827 W Alabama St\, Houston\, TX 77098. \nBetween the things we can do as individuals\, and the things government and business can do to respond to the challenges of our times\, lies a great untapped potential. It’s about what you can create with the help of the people who live in your street\, your neighborhood\, your town. \nIf enough people do it\, it can lead to real impact\, to real jobs and real transformation of the places we live\, and beyond! \nWe hope to see you there! Bring a friend! \nQuoting Rob Hopkins\, one of Transition’s founders – “For years\, in the green movement\, we have held that we are right\, that we have the answers … [But] many of the answers we need are to be found in people who we might\, in a more judgmental moment\, be seen as being part of the ‘system’\, including business people\, lawyers\, church groups\, local history groups\, and thousands of ordinary people with busy lives\, bills to pay and children to raise.”

All in all\, they stand as innovative and sustainable answers to today’s environmental and social problems. \nWe hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Transition Houston Meeting: If you’re not for Zero Waste\, how much are you for?
DESCRIPTION:Join Transition Houston on Tuesday\, May 2nd as we welcome Melanie Scruggs of the Texas Campaign for the Environment who will present details of Houston’s adoption of a Zero Waste Plan! \nSocializing starts at 6:30pm and the meeting begins at 7:00pm at the Haven’s Center\, 1827 W Alabama St\, Houston\, TX 77098. \nWhat is Zero Waste?\nThe big picture\, long-term goal to eliminate 90% of waste or more from landfills and incinerators is often called “Zero Waste.” This has many benefits because the way we manage our resources impacts the environment on so many levels. \nCommunities and businesses around the world have adopted Zero Waste Plans that combine waste reduction\, re-use\, recycling\, and composting to divert 90% or more of materials away from landfills and incinerators\, create jobs and protect the environment. Major cities like Los Angeles and New York\, as well as Texas cities like Dallas\, San Antonio and Austin have all passed Zero Waste plans. San Antonio and Austin already are piloting curbside compost collection bins! A typical Zero Waste goal is to divert 90% of waste from landfills and incinerators by a specific year. Several U.S. cities have already reached 70% or 80% with recycling and composting city-wide. If they can do it\, so can Houston! \nCall to Action\nWe are calling on Mayor Turner and City Council to take the next step toward Zero Waste in Houston by establishing a Zero Waste goal.
