SUMMARY:In Their Footsteps: An American Muslim Civil Rights Journey
DESCRIPTION:In Their Footsteps: An American Muslim Civil RightsJourney” follows some 30 American Muslim civil rights leaders as they journeyed through Alabama in April 2018 to learn about the history of slavery\, lynching\, segregation\, and about present-day racial injustice. \nYou will hear deeply personal and emotional reflections from American Muslims — including African-American Muslims — who lived through segregation and Jim Crow laws\, and for whom the journey brought back memories from their own lives. \n\n\nDuring the journey\, the Muslim leaders attended the inauguration of the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery and learned from experts at the historic 16th Street Baptist Church\, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute\, the Southern Poverty Law Center\, and the Civil Rights Memorial. Following the screening\, there will be a panel discussion of the film and related topics. \nhttp://bauuc.org/ \nAn optional hot lunch is available: $7 for adults\, $3 four children

SUMMARY:INVESTIGATING RUSSIA—2017 Natalie M. Smith PH.D.
DESCRIPTION:Natalie M Smith visited Crimea\, Moscow and St. Petersburg\, Russia\, as a delegate of the Center for Citizen Initiatives in May 2017. She has a Ph.D. in Russian literature and linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin and has traveled in the Russian Federation since 1995. CCI\, the largest citizen diplomacy organization between the two nations\, determined this year to carry out a first-ever “information-gathering” delegation of American citizen investigators who would travel to major Russian cities to learn what is happening in Russia – since many allegations are made in US mainstream media and few know whether it is truth or misinformation. \n  \nIn Moscow\, CCI delegates met with Mikhail Gorbachev\, ballistics expert Vladimir Kozin\, foreign policy expert Andrei Kortunov\, journalist Dmitri Babich and TV celebrity Vladimir Pozner to discuss areas of US and Russian concern. \n  \nIn Yalta\, Simferopol and Sevastopol city officials\, school children\, Simferopol’s Rotary Club\, university students\, journalists and many others gave perspectives on Crimea’s 2014 referendum and Western sanctions\, extended by the EU to 2018. \n  \nIn St.Petersburg entrepreneurs\, opposition politicians\, and educators shared their hopes for more cooperative work in the future. \n  \n  \nSharon Tennison’s website further describes her work: \nhttps://ccisf.org/ \n  \n  \nThe attached photo is during our meeting with Mikhail Gorbachev:

SUMMARY:How Wealth Inequality is Wrecking the World and What We can do about it
DESCRIPTION:The BAUUC Service and Justice Ministry (SJM) invite all to hear acclaimed author and scholar Chuck Collins discuss\, “How wealth inequality is wrecking the world and what we can do about it”.  The event is scheduled for March 22nd\, 7 to 9PM \nThe year Chuck Collins turned 16\, his father took him aside for a man-to-man talk. Edward Collins told his son that he had set up a substantial trust fund for him.\nChuck remembers feeling utter amazement. The great-grandson of Oscar Mayer and an heir to the wiener fortune\, he had grown up living comfortably\, but not lavishly\, in suburban Detroit. Now\, as his father spelled out\, he realized he would not have to work for money unless he wanted to. His dad also stressed his hope that the money would not change his son or his life goals. It didn’t. However\, events took a very different course from the one the elder Collins had so carefully planned. Ten years later\, in 1985\, Chuck Collins gave away every penny of his inheritance\, nearly half a million dollars\, to foundations and groups that he knew needed funding—organizations working for the environment\, peace\, racial equality\, and indigenous and gay people’s rights.\nChuck Collins is a senior scholar at the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) and directs IPS’s Program on Inequality and the Common Good where he co-edits He is an expert on U.S. inequality and author of several books\, including 99 to 1: How Wealth Inequality is Wrecking the World and What We Can Do About It.\nHe is co-author with Bill Gates Sr. of Wealth and Our Commonwealth\, (Beacon Press\, 2003)\, a case for taxing inherited fortunes. He is co-author with Mary Wright of The Moral Measure of the Economy\, a book about Christian ethics and economic life. His new book is Born on Third Base: A One Percenter Makes the Case for Tackling Inequality\, Bringing Wealth Home\, and Committing to the Common Good (Chelsea Green\, Sept. 2016).\nHe is co-founder of Wealth for the Common Good\, a network of business leaders\, high-income households and partners working together to promote shared prosperity and fair taxation. This network merged in 2015 with the Patriotic Millionaires.\nIn 1995\, he co-founded United for a Fair Economy (UFE) to raise the profile of the inequality issue and support popular education and organizing efforts to address inequality. He was Executive Director of UFE from 1995-2001 and Program Director until 2005.

SUMMARY:Love Thy Neighbor Rally in Clear Lake!
DESCRIPTION:Residents from across the southern suburbs of Houston will be publicly showing our support for our Muslim neighbors and for refugees and immigrants from predominately Muslim countries.
