SUMMARY:Native American Heritage Month
DESCRIPTION:The Center for the Healing of Racism honors Native American Heritage Month with a visiting exhibit from the American Indian Genocide Museum on Thursday\, November 9\, 2023 from Noon to 6:00 PM. Registration is required. Register online at: https://www.centerhealingracism.org/event/american-indian-genocide-museum/

SUMMARY:Dialogue on the Plantations
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Center for the Healing of Racism for the 5th annual Dialogue on the Plantation\, March 11-12\, 2023. We will travel together by bus to experience a powerful tour of three Louisiana plantations.  Our first stop on will be St. Joseph Plantation\, a working sugar cane plantation east of New Orleans. Oprah Winfrey’s hit drama Queen Sugar was filmed there. Our next stop is Laura Plantation\, a Creole plantation. Creole life in Louisiana exhibited a unique\, characteristic thread: the understanding that the family operated as a business and that the business was family. We’ll conclude our first day together with dinner and dialogue. \nAfter a continental breakfast the next morning\, we take a 90-minute tour of Whitney Plantation\, a genuine landmark built by enslaved Africans and their descendants. As a site of memory and consciousness\, the Whitney Plantation is meant to pay homage to all the enslaved humans not only on the plantation itself but elsewhere in the American South. Whitney Plantation is one of the few plantations to focus only on the enslaved people who were forced to work there and not on its opulence. After the tour\, we will gather in a picnic area to dialogue about the trip and the history we learned before heading home. \nFor more information and costs: 713-520-8226. \n\nhttps://www.centerhealingracism.org/event/5th-annual-dialogue-on-the-plantation/

SUMMARY:Racism in Transportation
DESCRIPTION:Access to safe\, reliable and affordable transportation is vital to all of us. Whether we travel in a car\, bus\, train\, bicycle\, wheelchair or on foot\, we can’t get to where we need to go — work\, school\, healthcare\, supermarket or socializing — without transportation.  All too often\, government transportation policies promote driving a car over other\, less-costly means of travel.  This has presented significant problems for Black and Latinx populations where car ownership is lower and decades of disinvestment in communities has resulted in poor transit\, walking or biking options.  Communities of color also bear the brunt of highway expansions\, which can destroy historic neighborhoods\, displace residents and and impact the health of those left behind.\n\nPlease join us on Wednesday\, June 2\, 2021\, 3:00-5:00 PM (CST) for a discussion on transportation policy and its role in systemic racism.  The discussion will be led by Oni K. Blair\, executive director of LINK Houston\, a nonprofit advocating for transportation equity.  The Zoom presentation is free and open to the public. Donations are encouraged.  Registration is required:  https://www.centerhealingracism.org/event/racism-in-transportation-a-zoom-dialogue/
