SUMMARY:Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month: "A Village Called Versailles"
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with a free screening of Emmy-nominated film A Village Called Versailles\, on Thursday\, May 11\, 2023\, 12:00 to 2:00 PM\, 3412 Crawford Street\, Houston 77004.\n\nIn a New Orleans neighborhood called Versailles\, a tight-knit group of Vietnamese Americans overcame obstacles to rebuild after Hurricane Katrina\, only to have their homes threatened by a new government-imposed toxic landfill. “A Village Called Versailles” is the empowering story of how the Versailles people\, who have already suffered so much in their lifetime\, turn a devastating disaster into a catalyst for change and a chance for a better future.\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public with donations encouraged.  Free parking in Lot 9 at Holman and Crawford/Almeda. Registration required at: https://www.centerhealingracism.org/event/asian-american-and-pacific-islander-heritage-month-film-screening/

SUMMARY:Race\, Racial Identity and Racism in Early Childhood
DESCRIPTION:Research shows that children develop racial biases between ages 2-4.  Explicitly discussing race and racism in developmentally appropriate ways is an important step in creating an anti-racist environment. Moreover\, nurturing racial pride benefits children of color socially\, cognitively\, and academically. \nPlease join the Center for the Healing of Racism for “Race\, Racial Identity and Racism in Early Childhood\,” a Saturday afternoon workshop for parents\, teachers and others who work with young children\, on May 6\, 2023\, 2:00-4:00 PM.  The workshop\, led by Dr. Flóra Faragó\, will guide us to a better understanding of how we can create nurturing environments where all children are supported and affirmed.  The program will take place at 3412 Crawford Avenue\, Houston\, TX 77004. \nDr. Faragó\, is an Associate Professor in Human Development and Family Studies at Stephen F. Austin State University. Her teaching and research interests center around children’s prejudice and stereotype development\, anti-bias and anti-racist curricula and parenting\, and inclusive early childhood education related to race and gender. \nKenyan poet Qui Qarre will perform spoken word\, thanks to generous support from the Jung Center and Houston Coalition Against Hate.  Participants will receive a copy of the book:  Our Skin:  A First Conversation about Race (First Conversations) by Megan Madison and Jessica Ralli. \nThis program is free and open to the public\, with donations encouraged.  Free parking is available in Lot 9 at Holman and Crawford/Almeda.  To reserve your spot please register no later than May 5\, 2023 at:  https://www.centerhealingracism.org/event/race-racial-identity-and-racism-in-early-childhood/

SUMMARY:Student-Led Resistance to Voter Suppression\, Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:The history of voter suppression efforts on HBCU campuses is long and ugly\, but there is an equally long history of student-led resistance.  Please join the Center for the Healing of Racism on Monday\, February 27\, 2023\, 6:00 to 8:00 PM (on Zoom)\, to hear Prairie View A&M professor Ron Goodwin\, Ph.D. discuss the history of voter suppression and student resistance at Prairie View A&M in Texas. Dr. Goodwin is an engaging\, passionate\, and authentic speaker who will draw on the lessons of history to provide context for current efforts to restrict access to democracy for students of color and to perpetuate racism and racial disparities through interference in education. A facilitated dialogue will follow the presentation.\n\nRon Goodwin is an Associate Professor at Prairie View A&M University and a native of San Antonio\, Texas. His research interests focus on the intersection of race and neighborhood development\, the political impacts of the urban planning processes\, and the cultural preservation of Texas’ Black community through the New Deal’s Slave Narratives. This event is free and open to the public\, with donations encouraged. To receive a Zoom link please register — no later than February 26 — on our website: https://www.centerhealingracism.org/event/student-led-resistance-to-voter-suppression-then-and-now-zoom/
