SUMMARY:Harvey Anniversary Dinner and Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:What a year it has been for West Street Recovery. We started with bikes and boats and now have five staff members who rebuild homes\, help residents navigate a complex and incredibly difficult recovery\, connect families to large rebuild aid groups \, and advocate for policies that promote an equitable recovery and create lasting benefit for people of Houston. Our advocacy has gotten us invited to the Texas State Senate to testify on the FEMA Preps program\, sent families to DC to testify\, and brought the BBC\, PBS\, and 60 Minutes to Northeast Houston. \nPlease join us to celebrate our first birthday as an organization with a lovely evening at Finca Tres Robles in 2nd Ward. The night will include a farm tour\, dinner including local meat\, produce and locally brewed beverages\, and stories from the West Street team and some of the people we have worked with. It’s has been an honor to grow in relationships with families in Northeast Houston\, grassroots groups\, and all of the people and organizations who have supported us along the way. Come out and meet our staff and members\, hear what we have been up to and donate to keep this work going! \nCan’t make the event? Donate online here! \nThis is a fundraiser\, so bring your checkbooks friends!

SUMMARY:Kimchi and Fermented Vegetables
DESCRIPTION:Come learn the ancient art of fermentation! It’s a way to preserve food\, harvest probiotics\, spread food cultures\, and get creative with your food. In this introductory class\, we will cover the basics of the fermentation process\, taste homemade ferments\, and you will make and take home a mason jar of your first vegetable ferment! Your gut is already thanking you. The class is based on the teachings of Sandor Katz’ book Wild Fermentation\, an essential reference for budding home fermenters. This class will use locally grown produce whenever possible\, meaning that the vegetables we ferment in class will change by the season! We have fermented cabbage\, beets\, carrots\, daikon radish\, green beans\, turnips\, mustard greens\, and more. These nutritious goods have been flavored with dill\, fennel\, oranges\, garlic\, and ginger. Come see what’s in season and make your own combination! \n10% of the proceeds to this class go to AIDA and Survival International. Two organizations that champion tribal peoples and defend their land and culture. As we celebrate their wisdom in our class we will also be sending support for their cultural practices to continue. \nScholarships are available. Please contact classes@smallplaces.org for more information. \nNOTE: This class is hosted at Finca Tres Robles urban farm located at 257 N Greenwood St\, Houston\, TX 77011.
