SUMMARY:Undeterred Movie\, online

Since NAFTA\, 9/11 and the Obama and Trump administrations border residents have been on the front-lines of the humanitarian crisis caused by increased border enforcement build up. The film was made by Eva Lewis\, a resident of Arivaca and long time member of People Helping People in the Border Zone (PHP). Undeterred was created in close collaboration with the Arivaca community and members of PHP.\nLearn more and view the trailer here\nDownload and share the poster here\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81859004066?pwd=U3pwc1ZHb1l3aHRPRU1QSUtTWE9qQT09 \n

SUMMARY:Escalting Resistance: Mass Rebellion Training
DESCRIPTION:Extinction Rebellion Houston is hosting a nonviolence workshop with longtime nonviolence trainer and activist Lisa Fithian. \nLisa will be offering a three hour training to hone our strategies and tactics to impact power holders and create social disruption at increasingly larger scales. This organizing requires attention to how we build collective power that heals and liberates us from our socialization in the dominant culture of superiority – white\, male\, rich and Christian. \nIn addition to this exploration of power and healing we will look at: power mapping of people\, economic centers\, and geographies to increase impact within strategic terrains\, creating calendars of engagement\, organizing our people\, increasing our capacity to take risks\, developing solidarity response networks and how artful “props” can bolster our uprisings.. \nWe cannot just tear it all down without replacing systems of oppression with systems of liberation. This is our challenge: organizing courageous\, joyful and bold rebellions rooted in solidarity\, with a beautiful\, loving insistence that another world is possible and we are creating her every day.

SUMMARY:Quaker Barter Fair on Buy Nothing Day
DESCRIPTION:Black Friday offers the challenge to BUY NOTHING!  The Quaker testimonies of Simplicity\, Community and Stewardship encourage Friends to find creative ways to care for the earth and each other\, and we want to extend this opportunity to others in the community.  Creating a space to practice thinking together in a new way about how we place value on objects and services within our community seems like a worthwhile way to observe the day after Thanksgiving. \nTo get involved\, just come!   Bring a table\, shelf\, rug or blanket to display your goods or a sign that describes your service(s).   CHILDREN ARE WELCOME!  Children are often the best models of how this can work.  They have the ability to add value to an item by describing potential uses\, and the creativity to negotiate three-way trades. \nThere will be a designated area for “free” items that you are willing to give to whomever wants them.  Visitors may then use such items to barter and trade with if they wish.   At the end of the day all items remaining at the “Free Table” will be donated to a local charity. \nWe will also share a meal of left-overs from Thanksgiving feasts\, so all attendees are invited to bring left overs to share. We will also enjoy spontaneous music making.   So\, please bring musical instruments\, singing bowls\, drums and guitars\, as well.

SUMMARY:Climate Movie Evening: Paris to Pittsburgh
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Live Oak Friends Meeting (Quaker Meeting House) in the Heights for a movie evening.  There will be a pot-luck dinner for those who are interested at 6 pm on Saturday August 24th.  The movie\, Paris to Pittsburgh will start at 7pm.  Families welcome.  Admission is free; just bring your pot luck item to share dinner and conversation.\n\nParis to Pittsburgh brings to life the impassioned efforts of individuals who are battling the most severe threats of climate change in their own backyards. Set against the national debate over the United States’ energy future – and the Trump administration’s decision to exit the Paris Climate Agreement – the film captures what’s at stake for communities around the country – and the inspiring ways Americans are responding. The film is directed by Sidney Beaumont and Mike Bonfiglio\, produced by Bloomberg Philanthropies and RadicalMedia and distributed by National Geographic Documentary Films.\n\nMore info on the film at: https://www.paristopittsburgh.com/\n\nIf you have any questions\, call 832-463-1128.

SUMMARY:Quaker Barter Fair
At the end of the day all items remaining at the “Free Table” will be donated to the Women’s Center.

At the end of the day\, whatever is left on the free table will be donated to the women’s center. \nNo money will be exchanged for services or goods.  The purpose of this event is to challenge those who choose to participate to NOT SHOP or BUY anything on this day after Thanksgiving.

SUMMARY:Investigating Russia 2017 Natalie M. Smith PH.D
DESCRIPTION:Natalie M Smith visited Crimea\, Moscow and St. Petersburg\, Russia\, as a delegate of the Center for Citizen Initiatives in May 2017. She has a Ph.D. in Russian literature and linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin and has traveled in the Russian Federation since 1995. CCI\, the largest citizen diplomacy organization between the two nations\, determined this year to carry out a first-ever “information-gathering” delegation of American citizen investigators who would travel to major Russian cities to learn what is happening in Russia – since many allegations are made in US mainstream media and few know whether it is truth or misinformation.\n\nIn Moscow\, CCI delegates met with Mikhail Gorbachev\, ballistics expert Vladimir Kozin\, foreign policy expert Andrei Kortunov\, journalist Dmitri Babich and TV celebrity Vladimir Pozner to discuss areas of US and Russian concern. \nIn Yalta\, Simferopol and Sevastopol city officials\, school children\, Simferopol’s Rotary Club\, university students\, journalists and many others gave perspectives on Crimea’s 2014 referendum and Western sanctions\, extended by the EU to 2018. \nIn St.Petersburg entrepreneurs\, opposition politicians\, and educators shared their hopes for more cooperative work in the future. \nSharon Tennison’s website further describes her work: \nhttps://ccisf.org/ \nThe attached photo is during our meeting with Mikhail Gorbachev:

SUMMARY:Two Houston Quakers Visit Israel / Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Ever wonder how the $10 million we give to Israel every day is used? Can there ever be peace in Israel / Palestine? What should America’s role be there? \nTwo Quakers have recently returned from an interfaith delegation to Palestine and Israel. They will share photos and stories from their experiences after staying with families\, meeting with Israeli and Palestinian peace activists and non-governmental organizations and experiencing life on both sides of the separation barrier. \nCome and join us\, experience life today in the area and learn about the struggles and hopes for the region. \nTwo Quakers from Live Oak Friends Meeting in Houston have recently returned from an interfaith delegation to Palestine and Israel. They and twenty-eight other participants from the United States\, Canada and the UK had the unique opportunity to hear directly from Palestinians and Israelis regarding the role of the United States in the pursuit of a just peace. The US government is the most dominant international player in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. \nBridget Lois Jensen is a second-generation Houstonian with a family history of service to the people of the city. Believing that Houston’s diversity is an asset only if the various communities develop relationships with one another\, she became involved in interfaith and cross-cultural activities with such organizations as Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston and the Center for the Healing of Racism. About her trip\, Ms. Jensen says\, “Though peace through political means has been elusive\, I witnessed a visceral hope in the people we met who are living in the midst of the conflict. I saw how their resiliency\, courage\, and commitment to preserving human dignity feed this hope and inspire individuals from various countries who accompany them. I too have been inspired and I want to share their stories and my experience so others will want to join this community of hope.” \nAlex McDonald is an entrepreneur and a Quaker committed to the American values of freedom and equality. Having been a student of the Israeli / Palestinian conflict for many years\, Mr. McDonald is grateful to have had the opportunity to see first-hand the implications of U.S. policies and to be able to separate fact from fiction in what we hear in the news. He thinks that the images from the trip will speak for themselves. \nBridget and Alex will share photos and stories from their experiences after staying with families\, meeting with Israeli and Palestinian peace activists and non-governmental organizations and experiencing life on both sides of the separation barrier. \nCome and join us\, experience life today in the area and learn about the struggles and hopes for the region.

SUMMARY:Earth Day Barter Fair
DESCRIPTION:A Barter Fair provides an opportunity to trade objects and services without using common currency. The Quaker testimonies of Simplicity\, Community and Stewardship encourage Friends to find creative ways to care for the earth and each other\, and we want to extend this opportunity to others in the community. Creating a space to practice thinking together in a new way about how we place value on objects and services within our community seems like a worthwhile way to observe the 48th anniversary of Earth Day. \nNo money will be exchanged for services or goods\, although monetary donations may be made to Live Oak Friends Meeting House for the use of their space. \n  \n

SUMMARY:"The Joy" a play about Mary Dyer
DESCRIPTION:Renowned actor-playwright\, Jeanmarie (Simpson) Bishop performs her Houston debut of “The Joy”\, a play about pre-First Amendment martyr\, Mary Dyer.\n– The performance is Pay-What-You-Can\, plus bring toiletries for us to make toiltetry packets for Health Care for the Homeless.\n– The performance will be followed by a discussion and pot luck dinner. \nThe author-performer says of her subject\, “The American First Amendment had everything to do with Mary Dyer being hanged more than a century before it was drafted. Speaking very personally\, her life – the choices she made\, the way she kept going – has helped me find the ambition to get up many a morning when all I wanted was to crawl under the covers and stay there. M…y insight\, more a revelation\, is that choices make us whole. We are powerful when we choose things\, as opposed to having them thrust upon us and being forced to accept them. Even hard things\, even being executed\, when it’s our choice\, is a liberation. I think about that every day now\, and it’s a gift Mary gave to me.” \nKnown for her performance portraits of fierce\, historical women\, Bishop has distinguished herself among her peers in the entertainment industry. \nThe late\, great Leonard Nimoy simply called her “brilliant.” Actor Judd Nelson said\, “Ultimately\, I believe Jeanmarie to be one of humanity’s invaluable resources.” Humorist Dylan Brody said\, “She is a terrific writer\, a riveting performer and an artistic activist of the sort all too rarely seen in America today\,” and superstar Joni Mitchell called her “a dedicated artist and remarkable woman.” \nhttp://marybarrettdyer.blogspot.com/2011/12/top-10-things-you-may-not-know-about.html
