SUMMARY:The Nuts and Bolts of Integral Ecology
DESCRIPTION:What is integral ecology\, and how can we put it into practice? Join Sr. Damien Marie Savino as she addresses these questions\, focusing on the notion of integral ecology introduced by Pope Francis in his environmental encyclical\, Laudato Si’ and explored in her new book Learning the Language of Creation\, to be released in January 2026. \n\n\n\nHer lecture will include comments upon practices such as regenerative agriculture and nature-based solutions\, in recognition that healing of ecosystems and of human communities goes hand in hand. \n\n\n\nThis program will be recorded and the recording distributed to all registrants. Time for interactive Q&A with the speaker will be provided. \n\n\n\nPlease register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1513793921369. \n\n\n\nContact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com with any questions.

SUMMARY:The Letter: Screening & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening and discussion of The Letter\, a gorgeously filmed story featuring scenes from around the world that puts a human face on climate change. The Letter tells the story of the Laudato Si’ encyclical letter by Pope Francis through the eyes of frontline leaders battling the ecological crisis across continents. A powerful – and surprising – dialogue with the Pope in the Vatican brings new hope for our common home. Featured in the film are Arouna Kandé\, a climate refugee in Senegal; Cacique Dadá\, an environmental defender and leader of the Maró Indigenous territory in the Brazilian Amazon; Ridhima Pandey\, a youth climate activist from India; and Greg Asner and Robin Martin\, biologists studying coral reefs in Hawaii. The film features exclusive footage from their encounter with Francis\, alongside the personal stories and scientific findings throughout the documentary. Join us for the film and discussion.  Register on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-letter-screening-discussion-tickets-648461334307. SUMMARY:Plastic Free EcoChallenge
DESCRIPTION:Plastic pollution now contaminates the deepest trenches in the ocean\, the highest mountain peaks\, and even the air we breathe. Microplastics have been found in human blood\, lungs\, breast milk and placentas.  Plastic has entered the food chain\, killing wildlife\, and causing the average person to eat tens of thousands of microplastic particles every year. To learn more about this issue & take action to affect change\, join one of the two teams listed below for the Plastic Free EcoChallenge (or create your own team\, or join as an individual)!  You select the challenges you’d like to accomplish during the month and when/how you do them.  For more information\, see this link: https://plasticfree.ecochallenge.org/. SUMMARY:Interfaith Justice Advocacy Workshop
DESCRIPTION:June 2023 is the perfect time to refresh your advocacy knowledge and set goals for engaging your faith community around issues that impact the planet and its peoples. Why is it such a perfect time? The Texas legislative session just ended\, and in September all eyes will turn toward the 2024 elections. Faith communities typically don’t want to be seen as “political\,” but\, as we’ll cover in this workshop\, faith communities can—and should—provide important education and leadership roles in nonpartisan civic engagement. Join Bee Moorhead\, executive director of Texas Impact\, an interfaith justice advocacy organization\, and her colleagues\, to talk about what that looks like “in real life\,” and do a deep dive into Texas Impact’s specific Houston-area resources and projects.  Register for this event on www.eventbrite.com at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/interfaith-justice-advocacy-workshop-tickets-627649485507. SUMMARY:The Path of Hope: A Study on Climate Action for Faith Communities
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join an online discussion series built around 15-minute videos featuring interviews with US faith leaders\, representatives of climate-impacted communities from the global South\, and presentations by UN officials and other experts. The videos walk viewers through four key climate policy issues that intersect with universal faith concerns for vulnerable and marginalized people. The series focuses on how climate change is impacting the core ministries of faith communities around the world\, how those impacts will increase in the future\, and why these impacts create an imperative for people of faith to advocate for strong US climate action.  A discussion guide is included that asks participants to think deeply about how their own local faith community’s direct service programs intersect with climate impacts\, and how knowledge and experiences gained through these programs might help to inform climate policy. The study’s Action Center provides practical\, step-by-step instructions for advocacy activities\, as well as recommended policy asks for local\, state\, and national leaders.  Join us! Please register on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-path-of-hope-a-study-on-climate-action-for-faith-communities-tickets-570682395407. SUMMARY:Federal Incentives for Energy Efficiency and Renewables: Why They Matter to People of Faith
DESCRIPTION:We now have a wide window of opportunity to make real\, lasting changes for clean energy and reducing carbon pollution. The Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law are investing billions of dollars to build clean energy sources\, electrify school buses\, cap orphaned wells\, and much\, much more.  In addition\, there are many incentives for households\, and houses of worship\, to invest in energy efficiency improvements and renewable energy.  People of faith therefore play a vital role in determining how federal funds are spent and the quality of the investments made. Lisa Brenskelle\, Houston Climate Communication Coordinator for Texas Interfaith Power & Light and Rebecca McIlwain\, Community Outreach Coordinator with Texas Climate Jobs Project\, will give an overview of the available federal grants/incentives and talk about what you can do to ensure the money is invested in a way that makes the most impact and promotes justice. Time for interactive Q&A with the speakers will be provided.  Please register for this event on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/federal-incentives-for-energy-efficiency-and-renewables-tickets-608800277017.  Texas Climate Jobs Project (TCJP) is a nonprofit organization that supports clean energy that is inclusive to everyone concerned and creates decent work opportunities that leave no one behind. Texas Interfaith Power & Light is the Texas chapter of Interfaith Power & Light\, a national nonprofit whose mission is to inspire and mobilize people of faith and conscience to take bold and just action on climate change.  Contact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com with any questions.

SUMMARY:Justice Interconnections: Climate\, Race\, Economy\, Health\, Migration & More
DESCRIPTION:The climate crisis is very real.  And we tend to oversimplify it.  In dealing with the climate crisis in a just manner\, it is imperative that we consider the many aspects of climate justice – racial justice\, economic justice\, health care justice\, climate migration justice\, and so much more.  Join retired United Methodist pastor\, the Rev. Mel Caraway\, as he leads us in an exploration of how all these divergent factors interconnect and make solving the climate crisis more complex. Time for interactive Q&A with the speaker will be provided. SUMMARY:Without the Development of All Nations\, there Can Be No Lasting Peace for the Planet
DESCRIPTION:A little more after the war in Ukraine\, which in reality had started in 2014\, escalated with the Russian military operation\, it has become very clear that the real issue is not Ukraine.  It is a proxy war between the U.S. Great Britain and NATO\, on the one side\, and Russia on the other — with a conflict with China also looming.  The real issue is that the nations of the Global South are trying to shed the colonial order\, this time for good\, and they have now become the Global Majority.  Driving the war danger is the systemic breakdown of the trans-Atlantic financial system\, with its over $2 quadrillion in unpayable financial assets.  The world urgently needs a new security and development architecture.  This two-day event will bring together leaders from some two dozen nations to discuss how to bring that about.

SUMMARY:Reconnecting Communities after a Natural Disaster
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Brett Perkison of the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston for a discussion of the effects that repeated record flooding due to climate change can have on local communities – often having more impact on lower socioeconomic communities who have less flood control measures put in place and have less resilience to recover from them due to financial constraints. Dr. Perkison will also focus on efforts of the local Houston community to improve resiliency through public advocacy – reviewing both the progress and the barriers that they have had encountered along the way. Interactive discussion with the virtual audience about how members of the Houston community can help to be better prepared for the next flooding event and how they can best assist their neighbors will be encouraged.
Join us! SUMMARY:Faithful Resilience: A Study on Climate Resilience for Faith Communities
DESCRIPTION:Faithful Resilience is a six-part weekly study on climate resilience for faith communities. The climate crisis has arrived. Faith communities must not only react\, but also prepare. Over the last decade\, hurricanes have intensified\, wildfires have burnt stronger\, and heat waves have baked our cities. These events can only be expected to get worse in the next decades. Most of our faith communities are not ready for these climate-driven disasters. Yet\, the communities who will be most threatened by climate change also have an opportunity to play a pivotal role in building resilience in their towns and cities. Whether a faith community has a large facility\, land\, social capital\, or something else\, those assets can be channeled into building climate resilience in preparation for the coming physical and spiritual storms of the climate crisis. Join us for this six-week exploration and consider how your faith community can become a force for climate resilience. SUMMARY:Oneness: Scripture & Science
DESCRIPTION:As John Muir famously wrote in 1911: “When we try to pick out anything by itself\, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.” This expression of oneness\, which Muir observed from his time in the Sierras\, has both a scientific and a spiritual basis. Muir was prescient\, as the known science in 1911 had only a rudimentary understanding\, by our modern standards\, or how all things connect. And\, although Muir was raised in very devout Christian home and considered himself a Christian\, he may never have connected the spiritual aspect of this oneness with the Christian faith.  Join Lisa Brenskelle\, who holds a doctoral degree in engineering and has spent decades working in earthkeeping ministry in both Christian and interfaith settings\, as she highlights the oneness of all things as understood by modern science and as expressed in Christian scriptures. Attendees will gain a deeper appreciation of how everything connects to everything else\, including how humanity is woven into the fabric of the universe. Time for interactive discussion with the speaker will be provided.  Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/oneness-scripture-science-tickets-430609794487.
