SUMMARY:“Will and Soul” Concert featuring Loop38
DESCRIPTION:Loop38 explores human creativity\, perseverance\, and all that binds us all together. Works by George Lewis and Chen Yi look inward\, considering humanity’s inherent creativity and life force\, while Carolyn Chen’s work looks outward\, contemplating our relationship with the environment. Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton joins the musicians of Loop38 to present the world premiere of a work by Martha Horst based on D.E.E.P.’s poetry about hope\, aspiration\, and the power of creation.

SUMMARY:American Indian Worldview and the Concept of Rights
DESCRIPTION:Join the Rothko Chapel for a dialogue between Tink Tinker and Dina Gilio-Whitaker\, moderated by Suzanne Benally\, exploring the concept of rights for the American Indian people. Juxtaposed to western frameworks that focus on individual rights\, for American Indians the idea of rights has often been used against the collective interests of tribal nations because the philosophical foundations at the core of Indigenous and western worldviews are dramatically different. The conversation will include these themes and provide an opportunity for the virtual audience to ask questions.  \nThe program is free with a suggested contributions $5-20.  For more info and to register visit www.rothkochapel.org.

SUMMARY:TAKE A “TOXIC TOUR” OF HOUSTON WITH ROTHKO CHAPEL AND TEXAS ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE ADVOCACY SERVICES
DESCRIPTION:Participants will visit East End sites on February 8 \n  \n  \nHouston\, TX (December 19\, 2019) Rothko Chapel in collaboration with Texas Environmental Justice Advocacy Services (t.e.j.a.s.) will host a bus tour of toxic sites in and around the greater Houston community on Saturday\, February 8\, 2020 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The tour will be led by Juan Parras and Yvette Arellano of t.e.j.a.s. and will explore the East End of Houston\, a neighborhood which borders Houston’s Ship Channel and is comprised of mostly Latino residents.  This frontline community is situated next to some of the largest refineries and chemical plants in the city.  Air pollution from nearby plastics-producing plants floats over schools\, offices\, and\, homes.  The goal of the tour is to show participants the structural reality of these massive industrial complexes and to offer a first-hand understanding of environmental justice issues the community faces. \n  \nParticipants will meet at 1415 Sul Ross (Chapel Annex) at 9:15 a.m. to enjoy a light breakfast and to board the bus. The bus is equipped with restrooms and WIFI. Bring your own lunch to eat on the bus. Please note that the bus will stop and explore some areas on foot. Therefore\, participants are encouraged to wear comfortable attire and closed toe shoes for walking on uneven and muddy terrain.  Tickets are $20 per person to offset transportation costs incurred by the Rothko Chapel and space is limited. Registration is required through rothkochapel.org. \n  \nThis program is presented as part of the Rothko Chapel’s two-year programmatic initiative exploring climate change’s impact on individuals around the world\, culminating with the biennial Rothko Chapel Óscar Romero Award for Human Rights in 2020. \n  \nTour Guides \nJuan Parras\, Founder/Executive Director\, Texas Environmental Justice Advocacy Services (t.e.j.a.s).  Juan has been organizing community voices for years beginning as a social worker with the Harris County Welfare Office\, and later with City of Houston Section 8 Housing Department. Juan’s resolve for equity\, justice and community resilience is the driving force behind t.e.j.a.s. with more than 40 years of organizing and work from social services to labor\, to environmental justice\, Parras can attest to the empowering force behind marrying issues of intersectionality in environmental work for marginalized communities. \n  \nYvette Arellano serves as a policy research and grassroots advocate with t.e.j.a.s. In 2015\, they led the campaign against H.R. 702\, which opened the floodgates to U.S. crude oil exports. Yvette represented the Gulf South at COP25. She was instrumental in the publication Double Jeopardy in Houston\, Air Toxics and Health in the Houston Community of Manchester and most recently Plastic and Health: The Hidden Cost of a Plastic Planet. They strive to emphasize that the Rights of Nature are fundamental to overall existence. Currently\, Yvette is leading efforts in Houston to help stop petrochemical expansion fueled by plastic production. \n  \nAbout Rothko Chapel \nThe Rothko Chapel is closed through June 2020 for major renovations.  As part of its Opening Spaces campaign\, the first phase of the project will realize a Welcome House and a new energy center; enhancements to the lighting and entryway in the Chapel; and new greenspaces for reflection will be added to the existing grounds. This event is one in a series of offsite programs presented by Chapel during the renovation.  For more visit: http://www.rothkochapel.org/experience/events/ \n  \n### \n  \n

In a time of censorship\, political bullying\, and polarization between people\, where do the arts stand today\, locally and nationally? What is the role of the arts as commentator and catalyst for social justice? And what is the responsibility of cultural institutions and patrons for preserving the arts as a voice for the public? \nIn partnership with Houston Grand Opera and in conjunction with their initiative Seeking the Human Spirit\,  join the Rothko Chapel for a conversation exploring arts and activism in society today from the perspectives of the artist\, cultural institution and funder. \nThe conversation participants include Peter Sellars\, renowned opera and theater director and professor at UCLA; Debbie McNulty\, Director of Mayor Turner’s Office of Cultural Affairs; and Patrick Summers\, Artistic and Music Director of Houston Grand Opera; moderated by the Rothko Chapel’s Executive Director David Leslie. \nAbout the program participants: \nPeter Sellars has gained international renown for his groundbreaking and transformative interpretations of artistic masterpieces and for collaborative projects with an extraordinary range of creative artists. Recent projects include an acclaimed production of La Clemenza di Tito at the 2017 Salzburg Festival\, a concert staging of The Cunning Little Vixen with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra\, and the premiere of the latest John Adams/Peter Sellars collaboration\, Girls of the Golden West\, at San Francisco Opera. Sellars has led several major arts festivals\, including the 1990 and 1993 Los Angeles Festivals and the 2002 Adelaide Arts Festival. In 2006 he was Artistic Director of New Crowned Hope\, a festival in Vienna for which he invited artists from diverse cultural backgrounds to create new work in the fields of music\, theater\, dance\, film\, the visual arts and architecture for the celebration of Mozart’s 250th birth anniversary. \nHe is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of World Arts and Cultures at UCLA\, a resident curator of the Telluride Film Festival\, and was a Mentor for the Rolex Arts Initiative. DESCRIPTION:2017 Rothko Chapel Óscar Romero Award Ceremony\nKeynote address by Harris County Precinct One Commissioner Rodney Ellis \nRothko Chapel’s bi-annual Óscar Romero Award–named after Archbishop Óscar Romero of San Salvador who was assassinated on March 24\, 1980\, because of his vocal opposition to the violent oppression of his fellow citizens–has been given every two years since 1987 in recognition of courageous\, grassroots human rights advocacy. Building upon the topic of ending mass incarceration addressed at our 2017 Spring Symposium\, the Chapel will honor two recipients\, one internationally and the other locally selected\, for this year’s recognition. \nThe international awardee is Pierre Claver Mbonimpa\, Executive Director of Association for the Protection of Prisoners and Human Rights in Burundi\, east Africa. SUMMARY:Silencing Opposition: Human Rights Violations in Burundi
DESCRIPTION:ORA Pre-Program: Silencing Opposition: Human Rights Violations in Burundi\nConversation with Former Ambassador Robert Krueger and Tony Tate\, The Fund for Global Human Rights \nAbout the presenters:\nRobert Krueger is a former US Representative and US Senator from Texas\, and served as US Ambassador on three occasions: to Mexico\, Burundi\, and Botswana; and additionally as US Special Representative to the Southern African Development Community. During his service in Burundi\, Krueger’s outspokenness on human rights issues provoked an ambush of his convoy in which two persons were killed and eight grievously wounded. Former President Bill Clinton\, addressing seven African presidents in Washington said\, “Our symbols need to be people like Ambassador Krueger\, who risked his life to keep people alive in Burundi.” Nobert Ndihokubwayo\, member of Burundi Parliament said\, “An ambassador out of the ordinary\, he went to the country side to see for himself the atrocities committed against a population afraid to speak out. He viewed massacre sites and visited the wounded at their hospital beds. This man of peace and exceptional courage contributed immensely to the defense of human rights for the population of Burundi; even today\, his name reminds people of the love and hope that he gave to the people of Burundi.” His book on living amid genocide in Burundi\, From Bloodshed to Hope in Burundi\, was published in 2007 by the University of Texas Press. Krueger holds a Ph.D. from Oxford University\, and served as a Professor of English and as Vice Provost and Dean of Arts and Sciences at Duke University. He currently lives with his family in New Braunfels\, Texas. \nTony Tate began working with the Fund for Global Human Rights as the program officer for Sub-Saharan Africa in October 2010. He oversees the Fund’s grant making programs in Burundi\, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. Before joining the Fund\, Tony was a program officer at Unbound Philanthropy\, responsible for the development of the organization’s international programs. Prior to his work at Unbound Philanthropy\, Tony worked for seven years as a researcher at Human Rights Watch\, first as their in-country researcher in Burundi\, later as the Africa researcher in the Children’s Rights Division. At Human Rights Watch\, he investigated and published reports on human rights violations in numerous countries in central\, eastern and southern Africa. In the 1990s\, Tony worked as a case manager at the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Comoros Islands. He has a J.D. from the City University of New York School of Law\, an M.A. in international affairs and African studies from Columbia University\, and a B.A. from the George Washington University. Tony is a member of the advisory committee of the Children’s Rights Division of Human Rights Watch and is fluent in French and conversant in Swahili.

SUMMARY:Double Jeopardy: Women and the Criminal Justice System
DESCRIPTION:2017 Rothko Chapel Óscar Romero Award Pre-Program\nDouble jeopardy: Women and the Criminal Justice System\nConversation and Book Signing with Julie Bindel \nWomen of sex trafficking face the dual realities of being victims while also being prosecuted as offenders. Join Julie Bindel in conversation with Houston activists and advocates as they explore this topic from both local and global perspectives. \nIn her most recent book “The Pimping of Prostitution\,” Bindel takes the debate on prostitution legislation head-on\, exposing the lived realities of women in contrast with the dominant discourse in current academic and liberal feminist debates. \nBased on more than 250 interviews with people involved in and affected by prostitution around the world\, Bindel exposes the harms of the global sex trade and documents the emergence of the exciting and vibrant survivor abolitionist movement – leading us to question when the policy makers\, politicians and international human rights organizations will start to reject the mythology around prostitution\, hold sex buyers accountable for the damage that they do\, and truly begin to fight for the human rights of women around the world. \nThis program will be followed by a public reception and book signing on the plaza. \nAbout the presenter:\nA renowned investigative journalist\, Julie Bindel has written extensively on a range of topics including violence against women\, the international surrogacy trade\, mail order brides\, trafficking\, and unsolved murders. She writes regularly for The Guardian\, New Statesman\, The International Business Times\, and The Spectator\, and frequently appears on the BBC and Sky News. She was Visiting Journalist at Brunel University\, UK (2013 – 2014) and is now on the Advisory Board of Byline.com. \nThis program builds upon the topic of ending mass incarceration addressed at our 2017 Spring Symposium and this year’s focus of our biannual Rothko Chapel’s Óscar Romero Award\, which recognizes courageous\, grassroots human rights advocacy. This year the Chapel will honor two recipients\, one internationally and the other locally selected. To learn more about the Award Ceremony and other related programs please click here.

SUMMARY:Art and Incarceration: Poetry\, Theatre and Music in and about Captivity
DESCRIPTION:Concert\, Ensemble Pi\nFor this interdisciplinary performance\, Ensemble Pi presents music\, text\, and theater works that focus on the rise of mass incarceration\, the racial disparities it reveals\, and the emotional toll it takes on inmates and their families. The concert opens with Rzewski’s minimalist masterpiece\, Coming Together\, composed in the wake of the 1971 prison riots in upstate New York and powerfully expressing the frustration of life behind bars and anger about injustice. The evening’s highlight is the world premiere of Rikers Islandby New York composer Eleanor Cory\, inspired by the anthology These Are Hard Times for Dreamers. Joseph Assadourian\, the narrator for Coming Together\, will also perform an excerpt from his tragi-comic play\, The Bullpen\, based on his own incarceration. The performance closes with the sublime Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time (1941)\, composed and performed in the prisoner-of-war camp in Gorlitz\, Germany\, capturing the hardship and sadness of being in prison\, while still conveying optimism. \nAbout the presenters:\nEnsemble Pi is a new music collective that uniquely connects pressing social and political issues and the idioms of classical contemporary music. We began our Peace Concerts series 10 years ago in response to the invasion of Iraq\, and have since presented annual chamber music concerts giving voice to the struggle for peace. Every concert includes at least one commission\, as well as contemporary classical masterpieces to address the historical tradition of “socially conscious” compositions. In the past\, we’ve collaborated with visual artists\, writers\, journalists and actors – including South African artist William Kentridge and American journalists Naomi Wolf and Jeremy Scahill – and have featured the music of John Harbison\, Frederic Rzewski\, Shostakovich and Penderecki. Our series has voiced protest against the Iraqi invasion\, but also the censorship of media\, fracking\, the Apartheid\, and more. Performers include: Alexis Gerlach\, cello; Moran Katz\, clarinet; Idith Meshulam Korman\, piano; Airi Yoshioka\, violin; and Joseph Assadourian\, actor and narrator.
