Houston Peace and Justice Center (HPJC) deplores domestic violence fueled by ready availability of guns

The recent mass shooting in San Bernardino, California, shows once again that gun violence in the United States is a serious problem that must be brought under control.  This was the 355th mass shooting in the United States in 2015, more than one per day!

HPJC rejects the arguments of the National Rifle Association (NRA) and certain politicians that the ready availability of guns is not the problem.    The U.S. has 5% of the world’s population and owns 40% of the world’s guns.  Americans are 20 times more likely to be murdered by a gun than people in other developed nations.

The correlation between the ready availability of guns and gun violence in the United States is irrefutable.  Politicians who refuse to implement common sense guns controls are motivated more by money from the gun lobby than by the well-being of the American people.

We agree with the statement by Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut that Congress is complicit in these mass murders when it fails to pass common-sense gun control measures.
