HPJC STATEMENT ON GUN VIOLENCE

HPJC STATEMENT ON GUN VIOLENCE

The Houston Peace and Justice Center (HPJC) deplores the epidemic of gun violence in the United States. We believe that this violence can be attributed to the easy access of guns, including automatic weapons.   We support the students and others who are protesting this gun violence and we call on our politicians to take strong steps to stop the violence.   In particular, we call on our politicians to do the following:

  1. Ban the sale of automatic and semi-automatic weapons.
  2. Enforce strong background checks to prohibit the sale of firearms to people who have exhibited violent tendencies.
  3. Initiate gun buy-back programs throughout the nation.

We believe that the National Rifle Association (NRA)  is responsible for the high level of gun deaths in this country and we call on all politicians and corporations to disassociate themselves from this organization.

Furthermore we believe that the U.S. Supreme Court has misinterpreted the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.  We call upon this Court to revise its earlier interpretation so that guns are not readily available to all citizens.
