FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Houston Peace and Justice Center (HPJC) supports the immigrants from Mexico and Central America , and well as from other countries, who have come to this country for a better life.
HPJC is very disappointed that the U.S. Supreme Court did not support President Obama’s Executive Order regarding DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and DAPA (Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents). The President’s action came about because Congress has failed to pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill.
The result of the failure of both Congress and the U.S. Supreme Court is that millions of immigrants have been deported, millions continue to live in fear, and thousands are currently living in detention facilities, their fate unknown. Harris County, by participating in this broken system through the 287(g) program, is complicit in breaking up families and continuing this atmosphere of fear.
We call upon Congress to fix this broken system so that millions of people who have immigrated to this country for a better life can keep their families together and stop living in fear. We call upon the Harris County Sheriff and the Harris County Commissioners to end the 287(g) program which harms our community and is a waste of taxpayer funds.
