“Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Villifies a People”
April 28, 2022 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm
In commemoration of Arab American Heritage Month, the Center for the Healing of Racism will present a screening of the film: “Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Villifies a People” on Thursday, April 28, 2022 (6:30 to 8:30pm CDT). A facilitated dialogue will follow the screening.
This groundbreaking documentary dissects a slanderous aspect of cinematic history that has run virtually unchallenged from the earliest days of silent film to today’s Hollywood blockbusters. Featuring acclaimed author Dr. Jack Shaheen, the film explores a long line of degrading images of Arabs – from Bedouin bandits and submissive maidens to sinister sheikhs and gun-wielding “terrorists” – offering devastating insights into the origin of these stereotypes that, over time, have contributed to prejudicial attitudes toward Arabs and Arab culture.
This event will be held IN PERSON at 3412 Crawford Street, Houston, TX 77004. It will not be offered virtually or recorded.
