Migrant Children in Crisis – National Public Witness Event at the Border

Ursula Detention Center 3700 W Ursula Ave,, McAllen

in people of good conscience, physicians and faith leaders bringing visibility to the human rights violations of the 134,000 children detained in 2017 by immigration (we have already exceeded this number for 2018). Come as a volunteer in a caravan of cars filled with relief supplies, including bottled water (no sparkling or flavored), easy open and individual sized fruit, peanut butter, veggies, protein snacks, cereals, crackers, natural juices, bags of dry rice, canned beans/soup, and blankets. We are heading to Ursula CBP detention facility in McAllen, Texas to bear witness to a system that has for too long ignored the basic needs of migrant children in immigration detention.

t.e.j.a.s. originated the toxic tour over 20 years ago in Houston as an educational tool for individuals within and outside of the community to gain a further understanding of environmental justice issues. Pictures cannot easily convey the surreal site of this massive industrial complex, nor the thick polluted air. Join us on a tour through the East End of Houston, where some of the largest refineries and chemical plants surround neighborhoods and spew toxins into the air. Thousands of people live, work, and attend schools in the shadow of these facilities.

Join Lisa Brenskelle, head of the Lutherans Restoring Creation Team for the Texas Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), for a talk on the Earth Charter.  The ELCA voted to endorse the Earth Charter at its national assembly in August. The Earth Charter, while a completely secular document, is an ethical framework for building a just, sustainable, and peaceful society. As such, it’s precepts have much in common with Christian social teaching, and indeed, with the social teaching of many faiths. This first half of this talk will cover the Earth Charter, its origins & principles, as well as materials available from the Earth Charter Initiative. The second half of the talk will explain the relationship between Earth Charter principles & Christian social teaching, using the social statements of the ELCA as a basis
