Houston Rapid Response Network Training

The Houston Rapid Response Network is a group of people on-call to show up for people and families impacted by current anti-immigration laws. The training will review actions to help counteract deportation and the splitting up of families in our state. The training also covers how documented allies can play both small and large roles in the network and how all of us together can show up in solidarity with the undocumented and migrant people in our community.

On Thursday, June 28th, families, advocates, and allies will hold a rally in the park across the street from the Brownsville Federal Court, where immigrants are being prosecuted en masse for crossing the border into the United States, and then separated from their children. Instead of focusing on actually reuniting kids with parents, the Trump administration now wants to warehouse whole families in prisons. Children don’t belong in jail at all, even with their parents, under any circumstances.

Houstonians- UNITE! Join Indivisible Houston, PSR Houston, FIEL and other allied groups Saturday, June 30th at 10 AM for a rally at City Hall and march to Ted Cruz’s office to show solidarity with families and opposition to burdensome, ignorant, divisive immigration law.

The horrors of the deportation machine and the Administration’s decision to kidnap children and use them as pawns in exchange for a fantasy real estate construction project along the southern border rip apart families and destroy communities.

Join us to demand that our publicly elected employees take the following actions:

1) End the new DHS policy of family separation in order to REUNITE FAMILIES;

2) Vote against the Goodlatte Immigration plan;

3) Defund ICE (an agency established after 9/11 with expanded powers beyond standard
customs checks and enforcement); and

4) End private prison donations and require reps return all private prison donations- both individual and PAC.

Demonstration against the Houston Child Detention Center

Widespread, intense opposition to the separation of migrant families has led Trump to issue an executive order supposedly ending this practice. But this nightmare is far from over. About 2000 children remain separated from their moms and dads. Trump’s “zero-tolerance” policy of prosecuting migrants may mean more family separations or the long-term detention of entire families. The administration is talking about new detention centers for scores of thousands of migrants. And in Houston, plans for a new child detention center at 419 Emancipation Avenue are going forward.

The Free Los Niños Coalition and its member organizations invite you to participate in another demonstration against the Houston child detention center at 419 Emancipation Avenue on Thursday, July 5, at 6 pm. This action will include lots of chanting, remarks from sponsoring groups, a march through the neighborhood, some wonderful entertainment, and—time permitting—an open mic. Please join us and help prevent the detention of migrants on a street which was recently renamed to honor the emancipation of African Americans from slavery.

Youth Justice Visioning Session

The Houston community is greatly impacted by youth incarceration, as Harris County commits the highest number of youth to Texas' state secure youth lockups. Additionally, local Harris County officials plan to build a new juvenile detention center at an estimated cost of $65-70 million. Kids do not belong in prisons, and the voices of Houston residents- particularly those most affected by youth incarceration- must be heard if a youth justice transformation is to take hold and be successful in Texas. Migrant Children in Crisis – Dehumanization and Deprivation in Immigration Detention

This is an interactive community event that begins with a conversation between physicians and faith leaders. The conversation will focus on the dehumanization and deprivations of children in immigration detention, that compounds the trauma from the conditions from which they flee and the harrowing journey towards the specter of freedom that follows.

Migrant Children in Crisis – National Public Witness Event at the Border

in people of good conscience, physicians and faith leaders bringing visibility to the human rights violations of the 134,000 children detained in 2017 by immigration (we have already exceeded this number for 2018). Come as a volunteer in a caravan of cars filled with relief supplies, including bottled water (no sparkling or flavored), easy open and individual sized fruit, peanut butter, veggies, protein snacks, cereals, crackers, natural juices, bags of dry rice, canned beans/soup, and blankets. We are heading to Ursula CBP detention facility in McAllen, Texas to bear witness to a system that has for too long ignored the basic needs of migrant children in immigration detention.

Love Knows No Borders – Houston

In conjunction with the American Friends Service Committee, we have deep concern surrounding the treatment of families that are seeking asylum in the United States.  We are seeking others with similar concerns to participate in the Love Knows No Borders week of action.  We are focused on bringing attention to this pressing issue through love and nonviolence.  Together, we are calling on the U.S. to end the detention and deportation of immigrants, respect the human right to migrate, and end the militarization of the border.

Emergency Demonstration Against SWK’s Child Detention Center

On February 14, Mayor Turner announced the elimination of the most important obstacles to the opening of Southwest Key's new child detention center at 419 Emancipation Avenue. His media advisory was misleading--it did not mention that a federal judge ruled against the City of Houston two months ago on the question of which permit is required. And now the administration's previous expression of concern about sexual crimes, abuse, neglect, and hundreds of other violations at SWK facilities seems to have disappeared!

In view of its awful record, Southwest Key should not be allowed to house migrant children. The people of the most diverse city in the country have been opposing this facility since last June. And we must continue this struggle. We need to stop SWK from putting children at risk! The Free Los Niños Coalition will hold an emergency demonstration against SWK's child detention center on Monday, February 18, at 5 pm. This will be the Coalition's twelfth protest during the past eight months. The broadest possible participation is strongly encouraged.
