In correlation with the exhibition, "The Faces of Syrian Refugees," Holocaust Museum Houston will host a one-day education workshop for teachers in the Greater Houston area. In efforts to offer resources and information on refugee resettlement and awareness, refugee advocacy groups will work in conjunction with the HMH Education Department to provide activities, literature, and lessons that teachers can take back to their classrooms.
This workshop is open to educators who work directly with refugee students, educators learning more about the refugee experience, and/or how students can become active advocates.
Camp Congress for Girls Houston Fall 2018 is a leadership program that introduces girls ages 9 to 15 to politics. Camp begins with a lesson on the structure of our political system. Each girl will choose to run for a seat in the US House of Representatives, the US Senate or for the presidency. She will create her own campaign with a platform, campaign slogan, campaign finance plan, campaign marketing materials and a political ad for YouTube. All campers will register to vote and then vote in an election. Once elected to Congress and sworn in, the newly installed members of Congress will learn how to introduce a bill, debate the merits of the bill, lobby fellow legislators, collaborate with the Executive branch and finally vote on the proposed bill. Camp will culminate with a ceremonial signing of the bill by our Ms. President. Girl Scouts participating in Camp Congress for Girls Houston will earn a Citizen Legacy Badge for participation. All participants will receive Certificate of Completion.

Dan Kovalik is a human rights and labor lawyer, and his new book makes the case that the Trump/Russia scandal is a dangerous diversion that leads some progressives to agitate for war with Russia. Kovalik's book offers history and context for the current scene and the "blame Russia" memes promoted by the media, based on anonymous leaks and unseen intelligence. From Vietnam to Iran/Contra, the Iraq war and intervention in Libya, false intelligence and spin have been used to justify illegal actions.
On October 7, 2001, The United States embarked on its longest war ever by invading Afghanistan. In addition to Afghanistan, the 2001 Authorization to Use Military Force (AUMF) has been used by the Bush, Obama, and Trump administrations to justify military operations in 18 countries, including Somalia, Libya, Syria, and Yemen.

The Center for the Healing of Racism will celebrate Black History Month with a screening of the film “Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North.” The documentary follows filmmaker Katrina Browne as she discovers that her New England ancestors were the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history. She and nine cousins retrace the Triangle Trade and gain powerful new perspectives on the black/white divide. The film will be followed by a dialogue.
Mark Nowak, poet, founder of the Worker Writers School, and author of Social Poetics (Coffee House Press, 2020), joins the Houston DSA Arts Collective and Political Education Committee for a discussion of cultural organizing and its role in building socialism. The event will include a reading, moderated Q&A, and open discussion.
