The Center for the Healing of Racism invites you to “Lunch & Learn Dialogues” once a month through December 2019.
Please join us for a panel discussion and dialogue about the continuing impact of slavery. Center member Barbara Paige will share her reflections on her family’s 2019 Year of Return trip to Ghana in memory of the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first enslaved Africans in the Jamestown Colony. Panelists will connect the dots between practices developed to sustain slavery and continuing inequities in our current economic, healthcare, and criminal justice systems.

The Center for the Healing of Racism will celebrate Black History Month with a screening of the film “Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North.” The documentary follows filmmaker Katrina Browne as she discovers that her New England ancestors were the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history. She and nine cousins retrace the Triangle Trade and gain powerful new perspectives on the black/white divide. The film will be followed by a dialogue.
Dialogue: Racism is an intensive workshop that provides a safe, respectful, and loving atmosphere where participants can learn about racism, share personal experiences, dispel fears and guilt and get to know one another.

Bring your lunch to the Center for the Healing of Racism for a presentation by local education activist and school psychologist Sarah Becker. The talk will be followed by a dialogue.
The fifth annual “Dialogue on the Plantations” includes guided tours of three Louisiana plantations: St. Joseph, Laura and Whitney Plantation. The latter is the site of the acclaimed Whitney Plantation Museum that pays homage to all of the enslaved Africans and their descendants who lived in the US South. The cost includes transportation on a video/WIFI bus equipped with a restroom, snacks on the bus, admission to all plantations, dinner, breakfast and an amazing learning opportunity.

Representatives from Pure Justice will be available to discuss resources for formerly incarcerated people as well as how individuals can join their movement.

Please join us for a Zoom conversation with author Joel Goza who will discuss his book America’s Unholy Ghosts: The Racist Roots of Our Faith and Politics on September 30, 2020, 6-8 PM (CDT). Goza, former pastor of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Houston, TX, writes with passion about the racist and classist roots of America’s political and religious institutions. Grounding his work in the philosophies of Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Adam Smith, Goza convincingly argues that America’s Founding Fathers deliberately designed a racist and inequitable society.
Given recent events, many of us have felt that more participation in activism is needed to actually make a difference within our community, our nation, and our government. With that said, we decided to create a national holiday that commemorates the work of leading activists and encourages more participation within the field of activism, especially within the United States.
