Interconnections with Soil, Human Health and the Environment
October 29, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
FreeSoil is essential to all life and is important to human health in many ways. It can filter water, provide nutrients and food, store carbon, and supply us with antibiotics to fight diseases. However, soils are often mistreated by industrial agriculture and contaminated by environmental pollutants like oil spills which can directly affect human and environmental health. Sara Denison, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rice University, will discuss how soil contamination, human health and the environment are all connected and ways contaminated soils can be cleaned up and restored. In addition, she will discuss the health burden associated with exposure to particular contaminants found in soils around Houston and technology that she is researching that will help remove these contaminants from soil. Time for Q&A with the speaker will be provided.
