  • Tell the Mayor No Hostile Corporate Takeover of HISD

Houston City Hall 901 Bagby Street, Houston

Come to City Council to demand the city to BACK OFF of a corporate takeover plan for four black and brown HISD schools.

The City of Houston has established a "nonprofit" astroturfed special interest group with the doublespeak title "Coalition for Educational Excellence and Equity in Houston", designed to mask the hostile corporate takeover over HISD schools. The registered agent is Juliet Stipeche, the Mayor's point person on education. The board comprises three wealthy right wing benefactors: Trini Mendenhall, Corbin Robertson Jr, and Stephanie Paige.

These people have NO BUSINESS being anywhere NEAR anything that is supposed to be for the public good, much less in control of the future of our children.

  • Emergency Demonstration Against SWK’s Child Detention Center

On February 14, Mayor Turner announced the elimination of the most important obstacles to the opening of Southwest Key's new child detention center at 419 Emancipation Avenue. His media advisory was misleading--it did not mention that a federal judge ruled against the City of Houston two months ago on the question of which permit is required. And now the administration's previous expression of concern about sexual crimes, abuse, neglect, and hundreds of other violations at SWK facilities seems to have disappeared!

In view of its awful record, Southwest Key should not be allowed to house migrant children. The people of the most diverse city in the country have been opposing this facility since last June. And we must continue this struggle. We need to stop SWK from putting children at risk! The Free Los Niños Coalition will hold an emergency demonstration against SWK's child detention center on Monday, February 18, at 5 pm. This will be the Coalition's twelfth protest during the past eight months. The broadest possible participation is strongly encouraged.

  • Stop Trump Now! No More Raids, Detentions, and Deportations!

Trump's relentless attacks on migrants are leading to more abuse, neglect, misery, and deaths. It is time for people to take a stronger stand against this racist repression. The criminalization of migrants and militarization of the border has contributed to thousands of deaths in the past decade. Scores of migrants have died at the hands of the Trump administration. Families continue to be separated. And private migrant prisons are profiting from the government's cruelty.

Free Los Ninos Coalition will hold a demonstration against SWK's child detention center and call for an end to all raids, detentions, and deportions on Thursday, July 4, at 1 pm. This national holiday is the perfect time to point out how the systemic repression of migrants demonstrates that all the official rhetoric about "liberty and justice for all" is a lie. And for those of us who really do want freedom, equality, and real democracy, this is the perfect time to come out and say so as we demand justice for migrants.

  • Houstonians for Migrant Justice Rally

Casa Sunzal Detention Center 419 Emancipation Ave, Houston, United States

We live in a city where asylum seekers are being kept in detention centers, one of which lies just outside Downtown and is housing teenagers indefinitely. These centers are run by the Southwest Key Programs, whose leaders are profiting off of the detainment of children and have yet to share adequate information about the conditions in these centers. We, as Houstonians, are obligated to come together to stand with the migrants in our city and call out maltreatment of migrants when it occurs.

The rally will be held on Saturday September 14, tentatively from 5:30-8:30pm at the Casa Sunzal detention center (419 Emancipation Ave). We will meet at Settegast Park (3000 Garrow St) at 5:30pm and walk for about 5-10 minutes to the detention center.
