International Food and Cultural Festival

SHAPE Community Center is forming a coalition of community partners are bridging the gap between cultures by showcasing the international flavor, through food and culture, of countries, regions, and traditions operating within ourcity. Food, music, and art have long been national as well as international genres of communication. This International Food and Cultural Festival will allow participants a global experience into the culture and customs of many countries and traditions through food, music, dance, dress, art, literature, and more.

Justice for Israel-Palestine with Rabbi Arik Ascherman

Arik Ascherman has dedicated his life to upholding the Jewish tradition of universal human rights, fighting alongside Palestinians and Israelis alike. After leading “Rabbis For Human Rights” for 21 years, Rabbi Ascherman recently founded “Torat Tzedek-Torah of Justice.”

Rabbi Ascherman will introduce Torat Tzedek and speak about his work to prevent the destruction of Negev Bedouin villages and the villages of Khan Al Akhar and Susya in the West Bank. He will also reflect more broadly on the structure of power in Israel and whether Israel can still be called a democracy.

In light of the UNRWA funding crisis and the deteriorating humanitarian conditions, we're fundraising to provide emergency assistance, including employing 25 UNRWA counselors -- refugees themselves -- to provide psychosocial support to Palestine refugee children and families in the Gaza Strip who suffer from trauma due to repeated Israeli military assaults and the continued blockade.

Join us for a candlelight vigil to honor the memory of the 95 enslaved prisoners whose bodies were discovered in Sugar Land this spring. We stand in solidarity with all the African-American men and women who were trapped in the horrific system of convict leasing here in Sugar Land and across the Southern United States. We will gather at 5 and light our candles at 5:30.

Bring family and friends. We hope to light at least 95 candles to represent each of the 95 individuals and raise awareness of this tragic chapter of our shared history.

Christmas at the Jail 6

Separation from a parent at Christmas time is difficult on any child but for the poor and innocent child, separated by a two inch plate of glass, it may be hardest of all. These blameless young enter a world of jailers and bars, cold and frightening, in a futile grasp at normalcy during perhaps the single most important family time of the year.

The emotional scars they experience and which may last a lifetime are ministered at Harris County Adult Detention Center by Santa Claus and several dozen elves who await these precious children as they walk out of the building. It is at this point that a miracle often occurs which can immediately be seen on the faces of these little ones. In the midst of the Fat Jolly Gentleman and piles of presents you can see their shaken faith in life return and a light of rekindled joy flicker in their eyes.

Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe Fundraiser

Showing up for Racial Justice (SURJ HTX) invites you to learn how to join and unite with the Native Original Tribe of Texas in a respectful way in the massive efforts to protect our state from environmental and political destruction. The Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe is repopulating a network of frontline encampments on their ancient village sites, protecting indigenous sacred sites, resisting construction of the LNG (fracked gas) terminals and their source of pipelines for more fracked gas, and educating people about the environmental devastation the Border Wall will cause. They are peacefully struggling to stop the senseless endangerment of people, animals our only environment and for a rapid equitable transition to sustainable/renewable natural ways of life to secure a future for all children and our future generations.

The Longoria Affair: Film Screening & Dialogue

Felix Longoria, a decorated Mexican American soldier, was killed in battle during World War II.  But when his body came home to Three Rivers, Texas in 1945, the only funeral home in town refused to handle his burial.  “The whites wouldn’t like it,” they told his widow.  Nationwide outrage sparked the beginning of Latinos as a political force in the U.S. 

In recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the Center for the Healing of Racism will be screening the “The Longoria Affair.”

Opening Night Screening and Reception for Anand Patwardhan: Ways of Struggle

In this monumental documentary, veteran Indian filmmaker Anand Patwardhan explores how India’s political climate has moved dramatically away from the nonviolent teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. Organized in chapters that move from the past to the present, Reason unflinchingly chronicles the rise of right-wing extremism and recent instances of violence, yet concludes with a message of cautious optimism. The screening includes a 15-minute intermission.

Julia Reichert: 50 Years in Film: Seeing Red: Stories of American Communists

Nominated for Best Documentary Feature, Seeing Red recounts the experiences of ordinary Americans who joined the Communist Party, and the high price many of them paid during the Red Scare in the 1950s. Compiled from more than 400 interviews with former and current Party members, the film delivers an engaging, funny, and human portrait of 50 years of activism. Iconic folk singer Pete Seeger and a dozen other members share personal stories that take on a special resonance today.

In March 1972, an estimated 10,000 Black politicians, activists, artists, and performers congregated at the National Black Political Convention in Gary, Indiana. Attendees included Amiri Baraka, Dick Gregory, Isaac Hayes, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Coretta Scott King, and Bobby Seale. William Greaves (1926–2014), the established documentarian of Black history, culture and politics, directed a camera crew and captured it all. Narrated by Sidney Poitier with poetry recited by Harry Belafonte, the film was thought at the time to be too radical for television broadcast and was drastically edited. Now restored to its original length, this essential documentary reveals a rousing, at times contentious, yet undeniably significant historical event.
