Peace Camp 2019 – Week Four

Peace Camp is an alternative day camp, from 9am - 3pm, for children ages 5-18.  The focus will be on developing inner peace and building problem solving skills.  Yoga, gardening, special guests, using puppets co-operative games, and cooking are some of the activities planned.  Youth who are 13 and older will have a curriculum that deals with gun control, racism, LGBTQ issues, PTSD, and other more mature topics.

Arik Ascherman has dedicated his life to upholding the Jewish tradition of universal human rights, fighting alongside Palestinians and Israelis alike. After leading “Rabbis For Human Rights” for 21 years, Rabbi Ascherman recently founded “Torat Tzedek-Torah of Justice.”

Rabbi Ascherman will introduce Torat Tzedek and speak about his work to prevent the destruction of Negev Bedouin villages and the villages of Khan Al Akhar and Susya in the West Bank. He will also reflect more broadly on the structure of power in Israel and whether Israel can still be called a democracy.

Benefit Concert for Climate Change

The Climate Action Team of First Unitarian Universalist Church will host Traveler in a concert on Saturday, September 22, 7:30pm at the Church at 5200 Fannin.  Proceeds will be donated to Clinic Access and the Malala Fund, both of which combat climate change by helping to stabilize the population.  Traveler is a well-known three member group of local folk/rock/blues singer songwriters.

“Justice” is the theme this summer for Peace Camp 2018. This is an alternative day camp from 9am -3pm, for children ages 5-18. Although several sessions are at churches, the camp is not religious.
