A RESOLUTION OF HOUSTON PEACE & JUSTICE CENTER (HPJC) URGING THE CITY OF HOUSTON AND THE UNITED STATES TO SUPPORT A PLANT-BASED TREATY
WHEREAS, the global climate challenges are increasing, requiring bold and timely action to reduce the degradation of nature and its environmental impacts; and
WHEREAS, the Paris Climate Agreement, adopted in 2015, encourages all nations to address the climate crisis, but leaves the responsibility for specific actions to countries, organizations, and individuals; and
WHEREAS, the Plant Based Treaty is a grassroots, global initiative developed to serve as a companion to the Paris Agreement by encouraging a greater focus on efficient, resource-conscious food systems and by reducing dependence on animal agriculture where feasible; and
WHEREAS, research shows that plant-based meals can have a 49% lower carbon footprint compared to animal-based meals, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has highlighted the need for strategies that reduce methane and overall emissions; and
WHEREAS, research shows that shifting to a plant-forward diet could prevent 15 millions of premature deaths worldwide each year, highlighting significant public health benefits; and
WHEREAS, research shows that adopting sustainable, plant-based diets is healthier, better for the environment, and can reduce food costs by up to one third for families and individuals; and
WHEREAS, animal agriculture uses approximately 78% of all farmland, while providing only 18% of global calories and 37% of global protein, which places substantial demands on land, water, and natural resources, and can challenge global food security and resource availability; and
WHEREAS, cities such as Los Angeles and over 50 others have formally endorsed the Plant Based Treaty, reflecting a broad recognition that food system innovation can be an effective tool in managing climate and resource concerns; and
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Houston Peace & Justice Center:
- Calls upon the city of Houston and the United States governments and all relevant bodies to endorse, support, and negotiate an international Plant Based Treaty as a companion to the Paris Climate Agreement, recognizing the significant influence of food systems on environmental responsibility and resilience.
- Urges the city of Houston to educate its residents about the health and environmental benefits of plant-based eating, and will prioritize plant-based options in all organizational purchasing, catering, and outreach activities, working in partnership with local vendors and community organizations to facilitate practical implementation, as far as possible and practicable.
- Encourages HPJC members and working groups to collaborate with allied organizations, local governments, and the broader Houston community to advance public awareness, participation, and policy advocacy for plant-based solutions that improve community health and environmental quality.
