  • Backspace Rocks the A,B,Cs fundraiser for Moms Demand Action

    White Oak Music Hall 2915 N Main St, Houston

    Backspace is a rock-n-roll covered band started in 2007, a group of like-minded (and like-hearted) business professionals who want to benefit the Houston community through their music. Their annual show is a themed “one-time-only” performance for charity. The theme for the 2018 show is “Backspace Rocks the A, B, C’s” wherein Backspace will play a 26-song set by 26 bands representing every letter of the alphabet. The concert will be held Saturday, March 24, 2018, at White Oak Music Hall. Come support Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America and other Houston charities that are serving our youngest in need, at a time when we need it the most.

    They will be teaching and leading songs from their new songbook Rise Again in a singalong concert open to all. This is a great opportunity to meet the couple who "wrote the book" (the best-selling group singing collection Rise Up Singing) as well as building community and celebrating the work being done to build resilience and resistance in these challenging times.

  • RACE CARDS: SELINA THOMPSON

    MATCH (Midtown Arts & Theater Center Houston) 3400 Main Street, Houston

    Selina Thompson is a UK based artist, performer, and writer. Her practice is primarily intimate, political, and participatory, with a strong strand of public engagement that then leads to joyous, highly visual work that seeks to connect to those often marginalized by the arts.

    The Race Cards installation is a room containing 1,000 questions about race, written by Selina Thompson. In this constantly evolving installation and archive, Thompson invites participants to supply their own answers to the many facets of race and racism in modern society by answering one of the questions. Up to four people may access the installation at once, and are invited to spend some time experiencing it at their own pace.

    On April 14 at 3pm, Selina Thompson will ask all 1,000 questions in a durational performance in MATCH Box 1. Audience members may come and go throughout the performance, arriving anytime between 3pm and 7pm. While at the MATCH, audiences are encouraged to interact with the Race Cards gallery installation.

  • HOUSTONIANS ARE CALLED TO DANCE FOR PEACE

    Core Dance, a professional dance organization, invites Houstonians of all ages and abilities to come together to dance for peace on Sunday, June 2 from 10am to noon in Hermann Park.  Now in its 39thyear, Planetary Danceis a simple dance that everyone can do co-created by Anna Halprin.  Known as the pioneer of the postmodern dance movement, Halprin describes Planetary Danceas “a dance for promoting peace among people and peace with the Earth.”  Local dancers and drummers will invite those participating to walk, run, or stand in three concentric circles creating a moving mandala. Halprin’s intent is that the group will form a collective body whose every step will become a prayer for healing Earth.
