The Houston Peace & Justice Center will be holding its Board Meeting on Saturday, October 21st from 1-3pm.
This Board Meeting replaces the quarterly meeting that had to be canceled August 26 due to Harvey.
The meeting is at the Mennonite Church at 1231 Wirt Rd. and is open to the public!

A nine-person Veterans For Peace delegation visited Palestine/Israel earlier this year. While there, they met with Palestinian popular resistance leaders as well as members of the Knesset. They participated in nonviolent direct action and witnessed the resiliency, solidarity, creativity and courage of the Palestinian resistance to the Israeli occupation and the settlements that steal their land, water, and other resources.
You are invited to go on the Journey of the Universe in October, with three opportunities to be awe-struck by this Emmy-award winning documentary which narrates the 14 billion year story of the universe's development in a single hour. The film tells this story in a way that is accessible to everyone: drawing on astronomy and physics to explain the emergence of galaxies and stars, geology and chemistry to understand the formation of Earth, biology and botany to trace life's evolution, and anthropology and history to see the rise of humans. Journey weaves science and humanities in a new way that allows for a comprehensive sense of awe and wonder to arise. This approach expands the human perspective to one that values life's complexity and sees the role of humans as critical to the further flourishing of the Earth community. An open facilitated discussion will follow each film screening.

Rothko Chapel's bi-annual Óscar Romero Award--named after Archbishop Óscar Romero of San Salvador who was assassinated on March 24, 1980, because of his vocal opposition to the violent oppression of his fellow citizens--has been given every two years since 1987 in recognition of courageous, grassroots human rights advocacy. Building upon the topic of ending mass incarceration addressed at our 2017 Spring Symposium, the Chapel will honor two recipients, one internationally and the other locally selected, for this year's recognition.

The Center for the Healing of Racism will present a screening of the film “From Swastika to Jim Crow” on Thursday, November 16 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, at 3412 Crawford St., Houston, 77004. The one-hour documentary tells the little known story of German Jewish professors who, expelled from their homeland by the Nazis, found new lives and careers at all-Black colleges and universities in the South. The film uncovers a remarkable moment in U.S. history while offering a fresh perspective on the complex history of race relations in the United States. The screening will be followed by a discussion.
