Please join Transgender Education Network of Texas and Texas Freedom Network for this interfaith panel discussion examining the relationship between the faith and trans communities.

While the relationship between these two communities is often painted as contentious in the media and proposed policy by extremist elected officials, more than ever we are seeing affirming faith organizations stand up against discrimination for the LGBTQ+ community. This panel will explore that relationship with various voices of leadership within the faith community.

Post-Harvey Resilience: Top Climate Scientist Katharine Hayoe 4-19

As one of the world’s top climate scientists, Katharine Hayhoe has been named among Time's 100 most influential people, Foreign Policy's 100 leading global thinkers, and Fortune's 50 world’s greatest leaders. The New York Times called her “…one of the nation’s most effective communicators on the threat of climate change and the need for action.” Her presentation will go beyond global climate issues, as she addresses local measures to make Houston a more resilient community post-Harvey. She is a professor at Texas Tech University and director of the Climate Science Center at Texas Tech. Her work has resulted in over 125 peer-reviewed publications. She is a lead author of the nation’s Fourth National Climate Assessment special report soon to be submitted to Congress and the President. She has conducted local climate impact assessments for a broad cross-section of organizations and cities, from Boston Logan Airport to the state of California to Austin Water. As a self-professed Evangelical Christian, she is well known for bridging the gap between scientists and faith-based communities.

Earth Day Barter Fair

A Barter Fair provides an opportunity to trade objects and services without using common currency. The Quaker testimonies of Simplicity, Community and Stewardship encourage Friends to find creative ways to care for the earth and each other, and we want to extend this opportunity to others in the community. Creating a space to practice thinking together in a new way about how we place value on objects and services within our community seems like a worthwhile way to observe the 49th anniversary of Earth Day.

To get involved, just come! Bring a table, shelf, rug or blanket to display your goods or a sign that describes your service(s). CHILDREN ARE WELCOME! Children are often the best models of how this can work. They have the ability to add value to an item by describing potential uses, and the creativity to negotiate three-way trades.

There will be a designated area for “free” items that you are willing to give to whomever wants them. Visitors may then use such items to barter and trade with if they wish. At the end of the day all items remaining at the “Free Table” will be donated to the Women’s Center.

One of the great features of the Living Library and checking out a Living Book is that there are no such things as stupid questions. Books have been prepared and made themselves available to you to be able to dig deep and find out what you always wanted to know about the book topic. They are familiar with the topics they represent and are available to discuss that topic with "Readers."

We will engage in hands-on environmental stewardship by mulching around plantings, planting native plants & removing trash at the Willow Waterhole Conservation Reserve. This event will offer activities for all ages and skill levels, so bring the whole family, your neighbors and your friends.
