The Living Library

"Living Books" are members of the community who have volunteered their time and their personal experiences as representatives of different segments of society. One of the great features of the Living Library and checking out a Living Book is that there are no such things as stupid questions. Books have been prepared and made themselves available to you to be able to dig deep and find out what you always wanted to know about the book topic. They are familiar with the topics they represent and are available to discuss that topic with "Readers."

Police Brutality Around Us: History & Discussion

This event will highlight a Northside student's presentation on police brutality. We will also have speakers, including Janie Torres, to discuss the history of police brutality in our area.

While the murder of Joe Campos Torres and the Moody Park Riots will be our main topics, we would like to remind everyone that the murder of Joe Campos Torres and the Moody Park riots are not just historical events. Family members still feel the loss of Joe Campos Torres and police brutality continues to be an issue today.

Spring 2018 Interfaith Environmental Stewardship Event

Calling people of all faiths or no faith at all in Houston to care for our shared environment during Earth Month.
 
We will engage in hands-on environmental stewardship by mulching around plantings, planting native plants & removing trash at the Willow Waterhole Conservation Reserve. This event will offer activities for all ages and skill levels, so bring the whole family, your neighbors and your friends.
 
Meet at The Gathering Place, 5310 South Willow Dr., Houston 77035 to sign in. Metro bus line 7 stops nearby and line 49 is not far. Tools/supplies will be provided.

All people should be free to practice the faith of their choice without fear of discrimination, intimidation, or reprisal;
Multiple religions and faith traditions can coexist peacefully;
Equal justice and equal protection under the law are rights to which all people are entitled regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, immigration and economic status, or religion;
Governments must protect vunerable communities and never cease to seek justice for acts of violence perpetrated against these communities.

Addressing Ongoing Air Quality Challenges in Houston

Christ the King Evangelical Lutheran Church invites you to a monthly environmental education web meeting series whose theme in 2018 is Stewardship.

At the April web meeting, we welcome Bakeyah Nelson, Air Alliance Houston's Executive Director, who will discuss Addressing Ongoing Air Quality Challenges in Houston. Bakeyah will provide her perspective on some of the current air quality challenges that Houston is facing - ones that Air Alliance Houston is working to address to improve public health. These range from concerns about concrete batch plants and metal recycling facilities, to the proposed expansion of I-45. Air Alliance Houston is also working with community partners to address some of the challenges exposed during Hurricane Harvey. The Center for the Healing of Racism presents it’s third annual “Dialogue on the Plantations”, a tour of three historic plantations in Louisiana, the weekend of May 5-6, 2018.  Learn about the role of slavery in the southern plantation economy.  Tour includes visits to St. Joseph Plantation (sugar cane), Laura Plantation (a Creole plantation) the the Whitney Plantation Museum, which pays homage to all slaves throughout the southern United States.

  In this presentation, Jim Blackburn will discuss the scope of current problems, some ideas to bring resilience to our community in the future, and the role of houses of worship could play in realizing this future.  But, this future can only be achieved by personal commitment and action, and to reach it, we all are going to have to come together and act for the common good, a great challenge for the faith community.

Karl Marx has achieved a lasting global impact, one that is greater and wider than any other philosopher before or afterwards. The Smithsonian Magazine published an article titled "Karl Marx Is the World's Most Influential Scholar". The article is based on a study and paper in Nature. Several information scientists from Indiana University Bloomington came to that conclusion based on how often Marx's work was cited plus the number of works.

After the global financial crisis of capitalism in 2008, Marx was often cited to help explain the crisis. Marx is relevant because his work is based on science and an advanced method of critical analysis in philosophy and economics.

“Abacus: Small Enough to Jail”

The Center for the Healing of Racism will celebrate Asian-Asian Pacific Islander Month with a screening of “Abacus: Small Enough to Jail” on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 from 7 to 9 PM. The 2016 documentary film by Steve James relates the story of Abacus Federal Savings Bank,a family-owned community bank located in Manhattan’s Chinatown in New York City. Because it was deemed "small enough to jail" rather than “too big to fail”,Abacus became the only financial institution to actually face criminal charges following the subprime mortgage crisis. The film premiered at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival where it was firstrunner-up for the People’s Choice Award. It was also nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 90th Academy Awards.
